It is original and thrilling and something that shouldn't be missed. The only thing that keeps this from getting 5 stars is that I don't feel that it is quite as strong as the previous entry.

I'll probably have to sit on that thought for awhile before I make that my final verdict. But my first impressions are that Quentin Barnes had a huge amount of personal growth in the first novel and that made the first book so much more powerful. I get the feeling that the Quentin we see in this novel is more or less the guy we'll see from here on out.

Doesn't bother me one bit, but probably takes a bit of the edge off the emotional aspect of the story for me. If he keeps churning these things out this could be for guys the same thing that twilight has become for the girls. Please keep writing these. May 12, Gabriel rated it really liked it. Where as book one had you on the field through most of the games, The Starter jumps into to the action already happening and chooses to add more about the history about the many species of the universe and the conflicts they were involved in that shaped the galaxy into what is going on presently. I missed not getting the whole of the games. I felt like this one was more of a highlight reel for a lot of the action where The Rookie took you from start to finish in most of them.

This is not a bad thing though. Where Sigler could have been business as usual and collected a paycheck, he instead built upon the bits of history he laid out in book one and expanded the universe into a much bigger place. I really connected with the characters more now having been through a "season" with them. Sure some are a little flat and stereotypical but you can't help but have a feeling of team and brotherhood with them. Simply, if you liked The Rookie then you will enjoy The Starter.

Perhaps because it is in the sport genre there doesn't seem to be much question whether the Krakens will win the big game at the end or is there? The Starter (Galactic Football League, book 2) by Scott Sigler

He is also really good at convincing me, a sports ignoramus, of all the smarts that go into being a professional athlete. Add to this plenty of cool alien species and how they all interconnect, physically, socially and politically into the Galactic Football League and I found the book insanely entertaining. Oh, and I love that as a world building technique Sigler uses all the storytelling practices of real world sport casting.

There are little pieces on history and physiology that would fit right in as colour pieces before a big game on the sports channel. Especial favourites are a xenobiologist who sounds like he is almost jacking-off as he describes all the disgusting practices of various sentient beings, and The Greatest Sports Show on Earth or something like that which has great comic moments all the while advancing the plot. Sigler is planning for this to be a seven book series, which may be stretching the formula thin, but for right now this is a terrific second book. Apr 21, Matt rated it it was amazing.

Scott Sigler did a good job developing Quentin Barnes and several of the other characters along with adding a few new ones into the mix. The Starter was definitely a fun read. Scott Sigler ended the book right where I hoped he would with the Krakens still being in Tier One tho barely which is how it should have been. I went into The Starter not expecting the Krakens to make it to the Galaxy Bowl let alone the play offs.

The Starter: Galactic Football League, Book 2 (Unabridged)

With i believe seven books planned in the series it is definitely too early for them to reach that far into the quest for a GFL championship. I'm also glad he didn't take them backwards and have them get relegated. He also sets up for the next book with my second favorite team from The Rookie Krakens being the first favorites The Orbiting Death moving up into Tier One and setting up a good rivalry between the two teams.

I am just ecstatic after finishing The Starter Jan 23, Joe Hempel rated it it was amazing. What can I say.

  1. The Sheikhs Concubine?
  2. Rainbow Gatherings.
  3. by Scott Sigler;
  4. The Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow?
  5. Sigler does a great job of combining all of these into something that is actually very plausible, and familiar, as well as integrating all the fantastic things that go with Science-Fiction and seamless create a great read!! A very very fast read if you enjoy all things football. The only thing that I would have liked to see would have been more football, maybe more action being described by the Commentators I understand why it's d Wow! I understand why it's done, you just can't have 12 weeks of play by play in the written word, but I think there could have been a bit more.

The version that I purchased was the eBook version Now I have to wait for All-Pro to come out, at least the first draft has been written!! Feb 26, Jeff Miller rated it really liked it. Having been a fan of Scott Sigler since he first started podcasting his book Earthcore I have thoroughly enjoyed his narration of his books and his banter. This time around I picked the ebook edition of The Starter both because I wanted to support the author and plus I didn't want to wait around for the weekly release of podcasted episodes. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of the series The Rookie and that goes even more so for The Starter.

In a book that is part SF, part sports, part action i Having been a fan of Scott Sigler since he first started podcasting his book Earthcore I have thoroughly enjoyed his narration of his books and his banter. In a book that is part SF, part sports, part action it is surprisingly how effective the idea of a Galactic football team made up of various alien races is. Add into that a gangster owner and difficulties among the players and you have a winner.

Most books that adopt a sports team in a plot like also sports movies are usually not surprising plot wise.

Not so in this case. I predicted plot paths only to find all my guesses wrong and was surprised over and over again as I moved through the novel. The Starter is simply great fun and a good read an my only disappointment is having to wait for the next in the series. Another entertaining entry in the Galactic Football League series. With the series' groundwork already laid out from the first book this story gives the author a chance to build a bit more of a backstory for the characters who were admittedly one-dimensional.

The book does a pretty good job mixing backstory, side-story, and gridiron action for the current season of the Galactic Football League without feeling like it's droning on with any one of them. The author definitely got more confident in Another entertaining entry in the Galactic Football League series. The author definitely got more confident in their narrative and no longer has the boilerplate build up that a lot of the football games in the first book had.

I would definitely recommend reading the first entry in the series before this one, but there is enough overlap that you won't feel totally lost if you start here. If you can get over the silly premise that a bunch of aliens met and football became the most important thing in the galaxy, then you won't be disappointed with this. Sep 07, Tim Myles rated it really liked it.

After reading the first book in the series The Rookie , I'll admit I was hooked, so I plunged straight into The Starter, expecting more of the same. Although the season-ending result can be seen quite a long way off the season disappointingly follows a similar pattern to the first book there are again some really nice plot-lines and character developments in this book - easily enough for me to look for book 3 in the series which is all you can want really, isn't it?

The After reading the first book in the series The Rookie , I'll admit I was hooked, so I plunged straight into The Starter, expecting more of the same. The mix between football and off-field events is still spot-on, leaning perhaps away from the field a touch more than the first book. I found this welcome, as otherwise things could have been a bit repetitive.

All in all, a great follow-up to an original I thoroughly enjoyed. Now where's the next one Sep 27, Paul Cooley rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Sports Fans, Sci-Fi fans. The GFL universe takes place in the far future where football has become an interspecies sport. The series follows Quentin Barnes, a quarterback in the GFL, through football seasons against the backdrop of a fascist empire that has forced many of the galaxy's races into subjugation. Instead of merely focusing on football, Sigler examines racism, economic instability, slavery, politics, CRIME, and, of course, the off-field antics of professional athletes.

Its essence is action surrounded by beautiful descriptions of terrifying alien races, their planets, and technological advancement. Sigler has done a great job of making hard sci-fi and football accessible to all audiences. Jan 21, Blaine rated it really liked it Shelves: I've been a fan of Scott Sigler since I first found his podcast of Infected. His early works are solid horror, mixed with humor. They will never be confused with literature, but both the books and his readings of them are entertaining.

    The Starter

The Starter continues the story begun in The Rookie. The pleasant surprise of this book is that Sigler appears to be developing a much larger story than it seemed in the first book. There is much more character development, and more context for the action. While one assumes that Quentin Barnes will lead his team to the championship at some point, it now seems that he will bring about more important changes for those living in the empire. But mostly, the story is easy and fun.

May 27, Chris rated it it was amazing. New characters are introduced in the series, and Quentin continues to grow up a bit more as he meets more races in the galaxy and learns to control his upbringing. If they don't play well, they could drop back into the Tier 2 league, and no one wants that! Once the season starts, Scott begins each chapter as a week in the GFL, and you see what happens to the characters both on and off the field.

There's a new plot thread begun with the Orbiting Death franchise in Tier 2, which I'm sure will come back to haunt the Krakens in later books. No spoilers forthcoming, read the book to find out if they manage to stay in Tier 1 or not. The Starter expands wonderfully on the foundation laid down in The Rookie. Quentin still has a lot of growing to do, and he makes some amazing strides during this novel. New plots unfold, filling the world outside of the Krakens' locker room. We get a little less football play in this book, when compared to The Rookie, but it's no less intense.

Jun 20, Mark rated it really liked it. This was a great follow-up to the first book, The Rookie.

I'm not a football fan by any means but I enjoy the world that Scott Sigler has created in this series and the diversity of characters. He hits on some major topics in the book including racism which I think was explored very well. The one thing I found occasionally distracting from the story were all the fictional excerpts from books on the races and the GFL inserted into many of the chapters.

While many of them added some context to wha This was a great follow-up to the first book, The Rookie. While many of them added some context to what was happening in the story, I felt that their placement distracted a bit from the pace of the story and probably would have been best left in an appendix where the reader could later explore them.

So entrancing that I stayed awake until past midnight just to finish those last pages. This was such a different story from The Rookie but that only serves to deepen and enhance the characters and their relationships even more. Not everything in Quentin Barnes first T1 season is roses and puppy dogs, but he didn't expect that it would be anyway. The story outside of the on-field action was what intrigued me the most and I am hoping that certain things like, who was responsible for the Nov 26, Jonte rated it it was amazing.
