Riding high on reaching the true destination of my Camino I raced to the airport to leave a country I'd fallen in love with but which I'd had enough of for the moment. There were two flights out that night; Seattle or Vancouver. My heart was calling me to Seattle, the Emerald City, the home of my TV family, but it all depended on my cab driver and how fast I could run with a loaded rucksack.

Showing Average rating 0. Pinging participants in the recent discussion on the same topic : Ypsilon , Ground Zero , and Hobbitschuster , what do you think of this idea? As for Valletta, it's one of the two European Capitals of Culture for this year, so I'd say it's deserving of one of the two coveted spots. Place : Sydney Airport Blurb : Australia's main international gateway and one of the oldest commercial airports in the world, SYD serves flights from all inhabited continents.

We have two unfeatured guide airport articles which are slightly problematic, Heathrow Airport from the UK, just like Manchester, so people might object to two airport articles from the same country back to back and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport we have a ton of U. Listings and layout closely match the manual of style.

There will be multiple ways to get in, some suggestions for moving out, and information on getting around.

Place : Naples Blurb : The stuff of your Italian vacation fantasies: three millennia of history and culture, a gorgeous seaside setting at the foot of mighty Vesuvius, and a cuisine with a worldwide following. While not necessary, the very simple Metropolitan Naples article could be improved as well.

Here's a Star district article that I've had my eye on for a while now. Place : Rail travel in Germany Blurb : Germany's railways enjoy a superb reputation abroad, and are often the fastest, most comfortable, and cheapest way around the country. Time to feature : Any; preferably not December schedule change Nominated by : Hobbitschuster talk , 2 March UTC Comment : I think some work may need to be done still but this could go live tomorrow without causing me too much headache.

Place : North Vancouver Blurb : Hit the trails, slopes or water — or just take in the sweeping views — in Vancouver's mountain playground.

So why not one of the beautiful cities in Canada. The article was usable when I found it and I believe everything that can be said about the town is in the article now. Place : Inca Trail Blurb : Hike centuries-old paths laid by an ancient Amerindian civilization, past impressive ruins and staggering mountain scenery, all the way to the stone city of Machu Picchu. This would also be our first ever feature from Peru! Place : Wales Blurb : Witness a living Celtic culture in a land of wet, green landscapes, historic castles, and spectacular mountains and coasts.

It's at least nine months before it goes on the Main Page and closer to that time we can update those bus hours. Place : Underground Railroad Blurb : This secretive network of escape routes and safe houses for 19th-century slaves seeking freedom in Canada is an integral element of African-American history. But it's also a vibrant modern metropolis, with a progressive college-town culture much at odds with the old Puritan stodginess.

  • Time to feature : Apr-Oct Nominated by : AndreCarrotflower talk , 2 March UTC Comment : By now, ButteBag is probably sick of hearing me congratulate him about the fine work he's done on the Boston district articles, so I hope he'll indulge me one last time as I repeat that his work is rapidly elevating Boston to the same elite tier as Chicago , Washington, D. I'm pretty sure ButteBag's response is going to be that he's not satisfied with the state of some of the district articles - I think I heard him mention that before - but given the fact that they all continue to develop at an admirable pace, and Boston won't be featured on the Main Page until next year at the earliest anyway, that leaves ample time for him to get them up to snuff.

Time to feature : Jun ? Not only would it cover one more of our unfeatured regions East African Islands , but we would also not have European OtBPs for four months straight from April to July, like it looks like we'd otherwise have. Place : Advice for nervous flyers Blurb : Scared of flying?

    • I can't come to think of anything missing so I upgraded it to guide per my monologue on the article's talk page and nominate it right now. If there's anything missing, feel free to add it. Place : Downtown Shanghai Blurb : Otherwise known as "Puxi", the historic core of China's largest and most modern city has an international flavor thanks to the colonialist "concession" system of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Time to feature : Apr-Oct; midsummer somewhat less desirable due to heat and humidity Nominated by : AndreCarrotflower talk , 25 September UTC Comment : While Pashley 's efforts at improving this article in view of a featured article nomination are apparently still ongoing , it's already at Guide level - and on the draft schedule grid that I keep on my laptop at home, there's a nice empty slot in the DotM column in May , between Uppsala and Boston.

As next summer looks to be another Europe- and North America-centric one on our Main Page, it'd sure be nice to have an Asian destination in the mix as a geographical counterpoint. Place : Erlangen Blurb : Though best known as the home of Siemens and Franconia's largest university, this "Modern Baroque City" is a place where history shines bright, with a well-preserved old town perfect for exploring on foot or bike.

Time to feature : May preferred to coincide with Bergkirchweih festival, otherwise Apr-Oct Nominated by : Hobbitschuster talk , 9 April UTC Comment : There is absolutely no rush to get this featured now , but I want to get this "in the pipeline" for our "Germany slot" a year or two from now. I know it is a minor point but it irks me that what is implicitly called "old town" is not in fac the old town So here goes an attempt at a totally reformulated blurb. I know not my best work, but maybe we can build on that? Hobbitschuster talk , 10 April UTC. Time to feature : Spring or autumn Nominated by : Yvwv talk , 26 October UTC Comment : Well-developed historical travel article, without the overburdened lists of the Roman Empire , and more travel-related information.

Place : Uppsala Blurb : Once a Viking Age shrine, Sweden's fourth-largest city is the seat of the Church of Sweden and the country's oldest university, where taxonomic biology and the Celsius temperature scale were developed. The article has improved a lot this year. A good timing would be April , with university application deadline on April 15, and the Walpurgis celebration on April Other Nordic destinations have their high season during winter or summer.

Place : Poros Blurb : Greece in a nutshell: delicious food, beaches and archaeological sites galore, and an environment of serenity and relaxation that's becoming harder and harder to find in this increasingly touristy region.

      That vanishing heritage

Considering Greece is one of the most popular Mediterranean countries to visit, it's surprising that we've only ever featured one Greek article Mykonos in Sep , so let's make this the second one. I just updated the Get in section, arranged Sleep in price categories and filled out some other small bits of information that were missing. It was mentioned in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk 's nomination that it risks ending up on the slush pile, so if that will happen I hope not here's a replacement for August's OtBP slot or if it's a problem to have three European destinations on the Main Page at the same time, we can run Kurashiki in August and this one in September.

Otherwise we can run this one next spring. Place : Military museums and sites in Australia Blurb : From Gallipoli to New Guinea to Iraq and Afghanistan, the Australian military has been instrumental in many decisive battles throughout history — and today a number of museums and memorials commemorate their contributions. The main contributor said all important sites are mentioned in the article, and many minor ones have been added. First, there has been war on Australia's soil, if you count Japanese air raids, and there's also been organized violence against Aborigines.

So how about "Australia is notable for its many war museums and memorials" or if it's felt that more is needed, "Australia hosts many war museums and memorials to wars in which Australians have fought"? Time to feature : Feb or Mar for the Falles festival. Otherwise, maybe spring or fall? I can't really find anything to complain about here.

Place : Brownsville Texas Blurb : An outdoorsy destination for sun-seekers with an unmistakably Hispanic flavor, the Rio Grande Valley's fast-growing yet historic hub city is a gateway to both Mexico and the beaches of South Padre Island. Not many can have the perks of bordering Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico and a popular resort town all within minute distances from one another. For this reason, I believe Brownsville is the prime destination for an Off the Beaten Path nomination, as it features characteristics not found elsewhere. I will say that the article's detail on restaurants, background information, tourist attractions, geo-tagging and more persuaded me to nominate it, along with an admin who suggested the same.

It's certainly against no policy to change the months to feature, but let's discuss it. Do you really think that Texas summers are ideal for most visitors? Place : Hostels Blurb : If you travel on a shoestring, hostels are a good choice for getting a roof over your head — and as a bonus, you can get to know fellow travellers! The article looks OK to me, and as always, if there's something to add, please do so.
