Long ago, Merlin planted a magical seed that grew into the Great Tree of Avalon.

Strange Planet

And for centuries, Avalon flourished. But now Avalon reels from brutal attacks, mysterious droughts, and strange evils. And then one night, all the stars in the sky suddenly go dark. Now the fate of Avalon rests with three young people: Tamwyn, a homeless wilderness guide; Elli, an escaped slave turned priestess; and Scree, an eagleman with a secret. One is the true heir of Merlin—the only person who can save Avalon—and one is fated to destroy it.

The Merlin Saga

Racing against time, the friends embark on three separate quests. And they will need to travel vast distances—both in their world and in their own hearts. Avalon is under seige by the warlord Rhita Gawr, now a wrathful dragon, who is bent on destroying it. To succeed they must overcome enormous obstacles, both in the world around them and deep within themselves. But once they do, their success is only the beginning. Everything culminates in three great battles: one deep underground, one on the muddy plains, and one high among the stars. Get A Copy. Kindle Edition , pages.

STAR WARS HISHE Compilation Volume One

McCarthy hated —hates—the Clintons. But he ended up concluding there had been no law-breaking.

Across the country, many judges and prosecutors are elected, some of them on partisan tickets. It is only in the jury-selection process that the system seeks to eliminate people who may have already formed strong opinions on a topic. This may be a necessity in juries, but weeding out the most knowledgeable candidates is self-evidently no way to run a justice system. While systemic problems in the justice system, such as vast racial inequities, require fixing, individual political views cannot and will not be eliminated.

The Dark Tower by Stephen King (1998)

The FBI has pretended to impartiality before. Edgar Hoover, promised a force that was immune to political considerations. If the FBI is a strange place for the right to see pernicious leftist influence, the thrust of the current attack—on expertise in the name of political correctness—closely mirrors the shape of attacks on academia and the press, where conservatives have lodged similar demands that members be entirely free of political views they find objectionable.

The answer in the case of the FBI, as on campus and in the media, is not an unrealistic expectation that people be blank slates, but protocols and codes of conduct designed to make sure that, whatever their personal beliefs, their work is being done fairly and without favor—and that there are procedures for disciplining them if they fall short of that.

In the case of Strzok, that system seems to be working fine. We want to hear what you think about this article. Submit a letter to the editor or write to letters theatlantic. Skip to content.
