The second-best part of the book was the fond portrayal of a person who has had a stroke and cannot speak normally - - uses nonsense words or A very good book. The second-best part of the book was the fond portrayal of a person who has had a stroke and cannot speak normally - - uses nonsense words or the wrong words. Also one of the characters who is at conflict with the main character has an interesting problem and is presented sympathetically. Feb 09, Wendie Berry rated it really liked it. Her stories deal with loss and tragedy in a way that intermediate students can relate.

This is a very short and sweet book. The main character has recently lost his father. Every night he wishes to see his father's ghost, but only other ghosts come. Until one night his Uncle's ghost comes with a request for help. This is a very moving story that helps children explore their feelings of loss and longing while dealing with bullies and grief.

The Fall That Makes Us Like God, Part I

I'm not a fan of ghost stories nor of nonsense words, but there's merit to this story, and I know that several of my nieces and nephews would have enjoyed the story immensely if I had read it aloud to them. The first lines of the book are I'm Dennis, your basic, ordinary nine-year-old boy, and usually I live a basic, ordinary life. I go to school, I take care of my dog, I eat, I sleep. Sometimes, though, my life is not so ordinary. This is because of the ghosts.

May 16, Emma rated it it was amazing. This is The Book, for me. It was the book that got me into reading, the first book I can remember reading and enjoying, the book that made me want to read other books simply because I had never before known that books could make me have emotions quite like this. I was seven. I haven't stopped reading since. Thanks, Ms.

It was funny and mysterious I chose the book because a wanted a adventure and some mystery and just wanted to laugh at a book. I would recommend this book to 8 and 9 year old kids. How to Grow a Reader

It completely took me back to childhood. That stage of life where we wish for things with all our might and anything is possible. Surprisingly this is a story about unconditional love, and how it never really dies. After Dennis's father died, he started seeing ghosts. He wishes his father's ghost will come visit him, but instead his uncle's ghost visits him, and asks Dennis to help him by finding things the uncle wanted to give to his wife.

Mildly humorous, very random.

'Pleasing' poems - Hello Poetry

This book is delightful and funny, but in unexpected ways. Aug 20, Gina rated it liked it. Simple and nice, except reading the gibberish gave me a headache. Maybe children will find it amusingly fun. May 09, Stephanie Bookish Plans rated it really liked it. Rated G This is my second Sharon screech novel and it was perfectly adorable. It was corky, funny, cute, and pulled at your heartstrings just a bit.

I read this along with my 3rd Grade Title I kiddos and we all loved it. They Rated G They kept giggling at the parts when Uncle Arvie would try to talk and it was such a great read for their level of education. Super cute book! Sep 28, C. The paranormal was appealing nonetheless and something about the description promised a story that would be memorable. It is. The meaning behind the bizarre headings account a great deal for what I praise.

At night, when a certain wind ignites the air at his bedroom window, ghosts begin to appear. Dennis would rather see his Father more than anyone in the world. It is he who speaks in a garbling of valid English words because in the last years of life, a stroke had effected his speech. Sharon brings this to life in the story, not only causing three mysteries that need unravelling but also providing compassion and education about what a stroke can be like. All of the errands are for his wife and I immediately felt I would love Julia to be my aunt!

So poised and so calm is she, that even when coming upon Dennis uprooting a rosebush; there is no accusation, no sharp burst of temper. She merely states that she hopes Dennis has a reason for the rowdy scene, giving him indeed full opportunity to explain. Jul 16, Fayre rated it it was ok. A nine-year old boy named Dennis gains the ability to see ghosts after the lost of his father.

These ghosts fly in through his window to his pup, Bo's, dismay. One day, he is visited by his uncle, Arvie, who had died from a stroke which causes him to talk kinnnda strange. Nevertheless, he asks Dennis to help him with 3 requests which he calls "pleases". Dennis helps Arvie and prays that his father's ghost will visit him one day. I decided to read this book aloud because my younger brother A nine-year old boy named Dennis gains the ability to see ghosts after the lost of his father.

I decided to read this book aloud because my younger brother dislikes reading. We finished the book and one car ride and i'm disappointed to say that the book could not keep his attention unless Billy the bully was bullying Dennis. Little bro also pointed out that many words that Arvie chooses to use are a little complicated for him to read, some words he couldn't make out at all even when I asked him to repeat after me.

The story overall was very cute. My problem is that no solutions were given and Arvie literally blew away in the wind Not only that, but Arvie wasn't being very mature about his wife moving on with someone else. And everyone is strangely missing that male figure in their life which is unnatural to say the least - not something you should be telling children.

May 04, Silvara Wilde rated it liked it Shelves: 3-and-a-half-star. Check out my other reviews, discussions and link ups at Fantasy of the Silver Dragon. This was a really cute book. I liked the explanation about how ghosts appear, and why the one Dennis wants most to see, wasn't there yet. It was also really sweet the way he helped his Uncle Arvie with his three "pleases".

Steve McVey - God's Favorite Child (Part 2)

I loved the bit with the "wasps", and how Dennis had to try to figure out what Uncle Arvie was saying to him. Uncle Arvie had a stroke when he was still alive, and so his words are all garbled. That seems to have carried over into his ghost-self.
