But the weight will not budge and I don't know what to do. Maybe go to Mexico and get a total body liposuction? It talks of curbing appetite, which is not my problem at all. My weight loss doc bullies me into eating cals, when I was eating He said my body was in starvation mode. Either way, I can't lose. He said Lexapro affected me metabolically. Is there a way to fix that? He wants me to exercise more, but every time I do, I get cluster migraines, sometimes for 3 weeks straight! He understands and is patient. Is there anything else I can try?

Is there something out there that works as an antidote for Lexapro problems? Pat Im so sorry to hear about your horrible experience. I would just like to give you a quick overview of how I responded to a similar situation. I have not had such a dramatic weight gain as a result of Lexipro but I have had the same experience of dramatically under eating and not losing weight and sometimes gaining. After three years off this drug - a couple of months ago a did another big detox on the drug - it was still showing up in my system! Prior to this drug my weight used to go between 57 - 60kg.

I used to have to watch carefully not to lose too much weight due to cycling and being into fitness generally. The drug has effected my metabolism, thyroid and bowel. After 3 years of working on it with my homeopath although had other things too I am starting to see a difference in bowel movements and feel that my metabolism is showing signs of waking up. I think the only place to look for help is outside mainstream medicine. It might be trial and error and slow but I am convinced that working with the body is the only way.

One other thing to mention is that last year we realised I had porphyria and have been treating that too. There is very good work in USA non medical about this condition and the problem of very bad drug reactions. I wish you the best of luck and know that if you are determined to recover your health you will find the right path for you. Catherine, thanks for the response. I'm happy you have found something that is working for you. I would love to try it. Thanks again!! Hi Pat - my choice of words with "detox" may be inaccurate on reflection.

I would like to think over time the drug residue will be eliminated. It may be that the correction of the imbalances due to enhancing my body's self healing capacity is what is happening. My homeopath works with German equipment called Mora and some English technology by a company that no longer exists. Homeopathy is all about working with frequencies and having some understanding of quantum physics is useful. I think it is beyond the scope of an email trying to explain my treatment.

Because of not being a practitioner I will need to over simplify things and may unintentionally be inaccurate with my interpretations. My system responds very well to energy treatments. Each person will for various reasons respond better to one system ie Chinese Traditional medicine - herbs - shiatsu - ayurveda etc. I have also been working with a holistic counsellor using Fast EFT to work on the trauma of being unwell and all the usual childhood stuff that effects us even when our parents were good! Its been much more effective than any psychological approach.

Anything that helps the self healing capacity of your body will be good. Yoga is excellent - re metabolism - Meditation is also important for me quietening down my nervous system and enhancing intuition.

Not doing too many treatments at once is also important. Sometimes when you are very sick and drug effected it messes up your intuition but I recommend exploring your local area hopefully a city and trying a few things.

With alternative therapy you need to have a long term approach as some times many layers of the onion have to be peeled away before the real problem emerges. Liking the person you see is also very important.

How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants

I hope this gives you some idea of how to approach finding the right path for you. Warm Regards Catherine. Dear Pat, Your doctor is probably right when he said that your body has changed metabolically from the antidepressant. Many others have reported the same frustrating lack of weight loss despite eating less and exercise. I assume that your thyroid is normal so that would not account for your difficulty in losing weight.

The one worry I have is that you may have lost muscle you said that your had muscle pain when you took the drug due to your various low calorie diets and your low calorie intake right now. Muscle loss is not uncommon among people who are overweight although they do not have the frail look of thin people with too little muscle. Since muscle increases calorie use, you may be undermining your weight loss by your low calorie intake.

And exercise is not enough to put back the muscle, you have to eat sufficient protein. Hi Judith! Thanks for the reply. I was on Synthroid for a few years, but after my marriage another doc tested me, and it was found the unaffected side of the thyroid pumped out enough hormone to be considered normal, so I was taken off the med. I guess the cyst must have shrunk, because lately the docs can't seem to feel it.

All tests say my thyroid is doing its job. I have had this for 25 years. All those diets I listed were tried after my Lexapro disaster. The pain is not bad now, but I get migraines very easily. I avoid the sun and am afraid to exercise, as that triggers them. My diet doc prescribed the only med that helps bless him! So instead of the predictable migraines a month, I may only have , depending on the luck of the draw. And if I exercise, I often doom myself to 3 or more days of misery. But on good days, I risk it.

But with this weight, it's understandably hard to tell. As to calorie intake, I've been eating 1, cals a day since going to the weight clinic; about 2 years. He has me on a low carb, high protein diet. I just wish it would work. My daughter has been after me to try one of those organic juice fasts. Supposedly that has helped a lot of sick people get well. I may try it, though the idea turns my stomach, to be honest. But it really sounds like my last resort. If this doesn't work, I will seriously consider liposuction.

Dear Pat, You might want to have your thyroid checked again and make sure that a 'low normal' is not ignored. I understand your reluctance to exercise given the real pain that follows. I assume that this means all exercise? Are you able to do Yoga or can you swim or do any muscle strengthening exercises? Not being able to exercise is very worrisome because you can lose muscle very easily and, believe it or not, actually become frail despite your weight. This is something that you ought to get more help with.

Do not go on a fast or any other such short term treatment that will cause you to lose more muscle. Hello Dr. Wurtman, After being on lexapro for over 6 years I quit slowly this year and completely stopped about 6 weeks ago. My question is, how long generally will it take to lose the weight? I power walk every day for almost 2 hours and am a very healthy eater. Is there anything I can do to expedite the weight loss? Thanks so much in advance. Miranda Dorsett. Your comment is so important because people forget that the reason drugs such as Lexapro are prescribed is because there often is a serious problem that they can help.

Your weight loss should be steady but don't try to lose it too fast as you risk losing muscle mass along with fat. Do you find it hard to eat smaller portions? If so you might try our 'trick' of spoiling your appetite before a meal by eating a small amount of a starchy carbohydrate see Serotonin Power Diet. But also make sure you increase your upper body muscle unless your power walking does this. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn.
