When you are involved in classical theater, you are exploring great stories and characters that have survived the test of time and are still relevant today. You can purchase online at OjaiACT. Celebratory gala after opening night tonight, April 5. Society matrons, religious figures, doctors, rich men, conniving women-- no one escaped his merciless wrath! But it was wrath laced with comedy that often lampooned his victims without them realizing they had been lampooned. Its purpose may be pure silliness, but there is a firm and lasting structure for evoking laughter which still works today in comedies you see on the stage, on TV, and in movies.

The brilliance of theatre lies in the way the stories are re-told throughout the centuries, and in doing so give the stories new meaning and new incarnations for the period in which they are presented. Through elaborate twists and turns, the play features Harpagon portrayed by Cecil Sutton , who is absorbed with a single-minded obsession: money. He is paranoid that his children are out to rob him.

In every aspect of his life, Harpagon is driven by his avarice and as a paragon of greed he exemplifies a multitude of facets that still plague our society today.

But this is not a play of doom or gloom. The Miser is a perfect example of bringing an old story first to the 17th century it premiered in and with this translation by David Chambers and updated to the 19th century by director Paul Sulzman, continues to illuminate and resonate and challenge our sensibilities in the 21st century.

The Miser: a Study Guide for the Molière Play

Christine Asero plays Frosine with both cunning and strength. She yells in frustration when Mariane and Cleante declare their love, seeing her money-making opportunity slip from her grasp. She still helps them when they find a plan to stop the impending marriage. She pushes La Fleche off when he fondles her from behind, and grimaces when he kisses her.

Shubhangi Kuchibhotla gives Mariane a sweet innocence.

She shies away from Harpagon as he inches towards her on a bench. As Jacques, he gets into a shoving match with Valere, landing onto the bench, and renounces honesty. As Anselm, he speaks with authority, commanding the stage and giving information that ties up all the loose ends.

Sandra Spence has done great work as Costume Designer, ensuring each character has a distinctive look. Valere wears a white ruffled collar and cuffs, a long pink vest, gray pants and a black coat. Elise has a green dress and collar, while Cleante looks elegant in a long green vest and pants, with a white coat. Harpagon looks quite somber in a dark blue jacket, black pants, and black ruffled cuffs. La Fleche is dressed all in brown, from his short, baggy pants, to his vest and hat. Mariane wears a pink and white dress with a white lace bonnet.

Frosine has a gold and white dress. Seigneur Anselm wears a brown coat and black tri-corner hat. View Playbill Pro. Inside The Playbill.
