Being a student at the UW put him one step closer to his longtime dream of becoming an architect. A student of the College of Built Environments, he needed to complete five years of study, and that required concentrated studying. By the summer of , he only needed one elective class to graduate. He was excited to join the ranks of the world outside of campus.
However, like many young men of the era, he was drafted by the military. His first notice arrived during his fourth year at the UW. But he chose to enlist instead since doing so offered him more options. Thanks to his architectural background, he was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers District in Albuquerque. He spent two years there, even playing on the state championship-winning softball team. In August , he received his orders for Vietnam.

The plane dove toward a dirt airfield, touched down and immediately spun round for takeoff. The door dropped open and Kirchner and a fellow soldier rolled out in a tumble of duffle bags and brand new jungle fatigues. The C then took off in a thunderous departure. The blowing dust was their only cover; they were exposed in the middle of nowhere. He was stationed at the well-fortified Camp Eagle.

Every time I watch this scene, it's hilarious, because Vaughn is great, but at the same time I can't help but think "Sarge? I don't ever remember "sarn't", but I like it. Google the Army NCO ranking structure if you seriously have questions. Most of the soldiers I met in basic years ago have a tenuous grasp on the English language anyway. You're right that you're not my target.
I just want to avoid pissing off too many parents of my audience. Most soldiers won't care. Those that do will get told to pound sand by the first group. Write on, writer guy or gal. Bonus points!? That would make sense. If she goes by Sarge, fair chance she is proud of her military heritage It's their job. Yes, this. Actual people won't mind, but expect a bunch of grown men who make fun of other people for having safe spaces to cry into their beards when you name a girl Sarge.
Chyna, Tawney, or Amber. She would refer to herself as an Army brat working her way through college. You know, I hadn't considered that career direction for her. In all seriousness, yes, an army brat is simply the child of an armed service member who has served for a while, being that her parents are both retired high ranking enlisted, they have both spent at a minimum of 20 years in the Army.

Army Brat checks out. What rank are in her parents? No, but not from lack of trying. In the course of the book I set her on fire, nearly electrocute her, attack her with a swarm of alien flying squirrels, trap her in an underground bunker during a black out, and break her toe. It's a comedy. That's actually something I've been vague about simply because I don't have a feel for what makes sense.
At the time she gets the nickname both of them have been in maybe five years in lower NCO positions. By the time they retire, though, her Dad Infantry has multiple combat tours and a near death injury that results in a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star I'm assuming that would be a sensible award, but I'm nervous - I know civilian authors have a tendency to go "medal happy" on characters.
Her Mom is an accountant, winding up in a company comptroller position later CFO if I actually get to writing the third book in civilian life.
