Le sigh….

I mentioned this on the Links post earlier, but Dreamspinner will honor any DSP preorders made at ARE if you forward the receipt to contact at dreamspinnerpress. Authors on Facebook are stating that ARe was selling ads within the past couple of days, which is also unconscionable.

I hope they get sued. It warms my heart to see these independent publishers coming through like this regarding royalties and preorders, but I hate seeing them take the hit because of it.

Top 10 Romance Writers

I sincerely hope that anyone who bought ad space with them takes them to the wall through their credit card company. Sad that a site I liked and that always treated me well as a reader has ended things so shabbily. Sarah, when the dust settles, can you do up to date posts on formats, readers, and sites to buy from? Same problem here. Thanks for the thorough column on this, Sarah. This was a frustrating day for readers, authors and publishers alike. If you have purchased Interlude Press books from ARe, please email us copies of your receipts at contact interludepress.

We are also making sure that our authors receive their royalties in full—no matter what we ultimately are paid by ARe. And, a lot of my first choices had been pulled by then.

Medieval Creatures, Volume 1 [The Virgin, the Knight, and the Unicorn

I never store my books on any site, I always download to my computer then transfer via USB to my kindle. I never store ebooks anywhere but on my own external hard drive.

I downloaded my library and purchased titles via the cart to use up my credit, including Buy 10 freebie links very late on Wednesday night. Retry during off- hours, but get busy ASAP. I think you might be stuck on any DRM protected files. If you ordered a title and it was pulled before you could download it, send a copy of your purchase confirmation to the publisher.

Good Luck.

Running a small press is a tough enough business, financially and otherwise, without retailers outright stealing your money. What a shitty thing to wake up to.

It was just dumb luck that I went there yesterday to check the new releases and then saw the announcement. And 3 days time to finalize everything is too short, IMO. How will I learn about new ebooks now and discover new authors? I relied a lot on ARE for that. If there are readers who purchased my books and cannot download them please contact me with proof of receipt and i will ensure you get a new copy. I never got an email at all and only heard about it on social media as well. I spent hours yesterday trying to get on the site and download or buy books but so many authors understandably pulled their books it was next to impossible.

This is such bullshit. I found out because I suddenly got a lot of notifications on Facebook of people reviewing ARe on there. I wondered what was happening and when to take a look.

Piers Anthony's Internet Publishing

I must say that how publishers are handling this has been very good with many going above and beyond. I am making notes for future reference for which I might like to try submitting to. How those treat their authors in a crisis is, in my opinion, a good indication of how they run their businesses generally. I have 8 books preordered at ARe. I feel horrible for the authors who are taking such a hit.

But, now I feel bad for the authors who will not be paid what they are owed for those books. I am very glad I never bought more than a title or two on ARe mostly just due to laziness and not wanting to use a new tool. It makes me so worried about my Harlequin titles though. It sounds like ARe was unrealistic though, and hoped they could squeak by and pull out of their tailspin.

Once again, this is a good example of why Calibre with the DRM removal plug in installed is so helpful.

This way, no matter what publisher goes out of business, or stops selling ebooks or whatever, I still have my library. January update: They are open for submissions in a number of genres, preferred length 40,, words. August update: they are currently closed to submissions. January update: Closed. Over four years closed? All rights are returned to the authors as of that date.

They are working to have all books removed from all reseller sites and websites, but it may take time for all of them to get unlisted. They are working on past royalty reports to get as much possible to the authors over the next few months. They have a warehouse full of returned print books, and authors can recover these for the price of shipping charges.

Any books not claimed will be remaindered or donated. As the maker of the main loan on which they operated, and as an authors whose best fantasy is there, I deeply regret this loss. But as they explain, things like Amazon reduced the market, and outfits like All Romance Ebooks defaulted while owing them money. Like a ship with a stove-in hull, they could not halt the slow sinking. Authors should contact them at info mundania. I was sent a warning about this one, which apparently took over from the defunct Treeside Press and has not been good about issuing statements or returning rights.

I looked it up, but got a blank screen. They accept no downloads or floppy discs manuscripts. You can probably do better faster and much cheaper at one of the self publishers. February update: "We give absolutely no e-mail quotes! Manuscripts should be submitted in 'double-spaced' hard copy only! January update: They describe three types of publishers: Major, which won't give an unknown writer the time of day; Subsidy, who publish anything for 10, and up; ansd Babcock, the happy medium. Just so you know their list is incomplete. There are small press publishers, many self publishers, and a host of electronic publishers, as this listing shows.

January update: Gone. This is a traditional publisher, offering a number of titles for free downloading, trusting that this will in the end generate more sales. I'll be interested to see if that works. October update: A negative author report. I gather the author queried, got a request, and submitted the book. They finally found it and said it had been palletized [I think this means processed for handling] and sent to a junior reader in Texas, who had it for 6 months and apparently never reported.

Return postage had been included, but the book was never returned. There is no evidence that an actual editor ever saw the book. I had my own experience with this publisher years ago, and have to say that this is typical of their fouled-up system.

Customer reviews

January update: Their site lists What's New, but the newest is almost a year old. I'd be wary. January update: Now they have an extensive free ebook library, but I don't see evidence of publishing.
