And Hunter: "Heigh, ho, the carrion crow, folderolderiddle"from "Mountains of the Moon"; "Is it all fall down, is it all go under? Nursery rhymes have contributed to the lyrics of popular song since long before the Grateful Dead.

Annotation Tuesday! Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah and “If He Hollers Let Him Go”
Two things become clear as you read books about these rhymes. First, they cannot be dated. They are ancient and may have been collected as recently as a hundred years ago. Second, they are difficult to interpret. Scholars have over the years written lengthy conjectural articles on the ALLiqator it possible meanings of just about every rhyme and can never seem to agree on any single interpretation.
Aside from the songs already noted, here are some more examples of lyrics showing evidence of nursery rhyme influence: When I was a little boy, My mammy kept me in, But now I am a great big boy Fit to serve the king To which compare: When I was a young man, I needed good luck. But I'm a little bit older now And I know my stuff. So that lady in the rhyme is actually of divine descent, and her bells and attendant music are part of her worship. Hunter used this particular line in "Cosmic Charlie. The Carousel was a performance venue owned and operated by a few San Francisco bands, the Dead and the Airplane among them. The Dead opened the ballroom on February 14, The Avalon located at 1 Sutter, at Van Ness, and operated by Chet Helms and his Family Dog and the Fillmore southwest corner of Fillmore and Geary, owned and operated by Bill Graham were relegated to competitor status, hence this dig at the Carousel's competition. Later in , the Carousel was taken over by Graham, who renamed it the Fillmore West. It opened on August 5, with a show by Ornette Coleman.

Pigpen's ad-lib rap at the end of "Love Light" drew on old blues sources. Texas songster Mance Lipscomb's tune "Shake Shake, Mama" contains the following verse: Oh I like my babe but I don't like her teddy bear Oh, like my woman but I don't like her teddy bear I'm gon' buy her a box-back nittie to wear Mack McCormick's 1 liner notes to Lipscomb's original Arhoolie LP discusses "one verse lauding the 'box-back nittie' which replaced the 'teddy bear' garment which men found unappealing.
One theory has it that box-back nitties are long flannel underwear with a flap in the back. Garcia: But, like, I have no idea where [Pigpen] got that thing he used to sing: "She got box-back nitties and great big noble thighs, working undercover with a boar hog's eye. It's some weird mojo shit or something. But he could always pull that stuff out. He could do that as long as I knew him. When he was on, he was amazing. Performed regularly through mid, then dropped from the repertoire after Pigpen's death.

The Dictionary of Christian Art defines the rose as: A floral symbol sacred to Venus and signifying love, the quality and nature of which was characterized by the color of the rose. A symbol of purity, a white rose rep- resented innocence and or innocent nonsexual love, while a pink rose represented first love, and a red rose true love. When held by a martyr such as Saint Stephen , the red rose signified "red martyrdom," or the loss of life, and the white rose "white martyrdom," or celibacy.
According to Ambrose, the thorns of the rose were a reminder of human finitude and guilt as the roses in the Paradise Carden had no thorns. A thornless rose was an attribute of Mary as the Second Eve. Apostolos-Cappadona The literature is voluminous, and the point is easily taken: Roses have had tremendous significance for as long as his- tory has been recorded, and likely for long before that.
