Auto detailing clay is designed to pick up or pull out the surface contaminants from the paint without harming or scratching the finish. Rubbing a clay bar on paint requires constant lubrication. The lubricant will help the clay to glide smoothly over a dirty surface. It also prevents the contaminants from scratching the paint. There are two types of clay bars in the market today: medium-grade and fine-grade detailing clay.
The former is more abrasive and can remove the wax from the paint. This type of clay is designed to be used no more than once or twice a year and is ideal for deep-cleaning the paint prior to waxing. A fine example is the Wolfgang Poly Clay Kit.

This kit even comes with clay lubricant and a set of microfiber towels! On the other side of the spectrum is fine-grade detailing clay. This type of clay is safe to use regularly on paint and will not remove wax. So I haven't seen much activity here in a while, so I figured I would throw up a basic guide on the bare minimum supplies to get started detailing on the cheap. As a student, I never have much money, so I've been slowly building my arsenal over about a year, and I was always looking for a way to save money.
So here is what you need to get good results for minimal investment:. The first step is always going to be to wash the car. Many people use a bucket, some soap, and a sponge. While this may work, it is often times putting swirls in the paint, making the paint look dull over time. The quality of soap is important too. To minimize the swirls you put into the paint, here is what you want:. Don't even think about it. A large, soft, waffle weave microfiber towel works great to dry the car.
A trick you can use when you dry the car is use the sheeting method. Basically, let the garden hose saturate the panel and force the water to pool up. Then the water should move as a unit and slide off the car. This reduces the amount of standing water that you would otherwise have to wipe up. Another trick is using compressed air or a leaf blower with a filter! Then, you wipe the remaining water with some microfiber towels.
A clay bar is used to remove embedded particulates that are stuck to the paint. This includes, road grime, tree sap, and tar. Once clayed, the paint will feel silky smooth like glass. This step is crucial to do before any type of wax is put on. You don't want to be rubbing particulates into the paint while waxing. A Meguiar's or Mother's clay kit can be bought locally. Both are virtually or perhaps actually the same. These kits are great because they come with plenty of clay seriously, this kit has lasted over a year for me and even a free microfiber towel and quick detailer.
You might run out of quick detailer because you have to use a lot of it to keep the surface and the clay lubricated when claying. You can either buy another bottle, or pick up some Optimum No Rinse and make your own quick detailer.
This stuff comes in concentrated form, so a 32 Oz bottle will make a LOT of quick detailer and it ends up being cheaper in the long run. Recently, an alternative to the clay bar has surfaced. Some companies, such as NanoskinUSA, have developed wash mitts that have a tacky surface on one side that can pick up contaminants the same way clay can.
While they are a little more investment up front, these mitts can be dropped, washed, and re-used, and they last a lot longer than a bar of clay. The biggest advantage of one of this mitts is that you can clay as you wash the car, which saves you a lot of time. If you have the cash to spare, I highly recommend one. LSP stands for last step product. This is the final step for the paint. This step is fun and rewarding, but choosing a LSP is very subjective.
There are some very expensive waxes and sealants that are great, some inexpensive ones that are good, and then some that are not good at all. This is a good starter wax because the kit comes with a microfiber towel and a foam applicator pad. It goes on easy, comes off even easier. Also, it smells delicious. The durability isn't the greatest, but it is a great bang for your buck. Another wax, that is actually a wax-sealant hybrid is Collinite This stuff is pretty long lasting.
Highly recommend. Sealants are different from waxes in that while carnauba waxes are made from natural substances, sealants are synthetic. Sealants typically have much better durability than waxes, but some argue that they don't provide as much "shine" as a wax. I will let you come to your own conclusion about that.
These are just a few great sealants I can think of off the top of my head. You will have to do some research here and figure out what is best for you and your budget.
