The ending I feel was a bit insipid, seemed too rushed and simple. I would have liked the story to have been developed a bit more, there could have been more avenues to explore. As a typical teen, Leo wants answers. His search for the truth gives him a huge challenge Can he protect and save his family and Peter? But as the back of the book says How do you do that if you can make no impression on the material world? The mini-biography in the front of the book tells us that Jerome likes to write the kind of stories he enjoys reading - fast-paced adventures where the characters struggle with things such as feelings, identity and difficult choices.

I love the world Jerome Parrisse has created for Leo. The story goes at a reasonable pace before you find the story racing on. The characters are easy to relate to, despite this being a fantasy story, and it just goes to show how strong family and friendship can be.

Despite this being a young adult book, it should appeal to everyone. White western society does not prepare us well for the loss of a loved one - shielding children from funerals and death until the loss of a grandparent or worse yet, parent. For a parent to lose a child however is the worst punishment. Jerome Parisse takes an intriguing look at the afterlife from the experiences of a young boy, melding religious and supernatural myths and folklore.

He has developed the relationships between the residents of earth and beings of the afterlife. Guardian Angels, Archangels, Authorities, Powers, Seraphim and Cherubim are familiar terms, but Parisse give them substance, identifying the different 'levels' of angelic heirarchy with a range of coloured wing tips.

Then there are those sent by the Father of All Lies, to taunt and tempt in the wrestlling match for power between worlds.

Don't misunderstand, this story is rooted in earthly characteristics for all the spiritual and human personas, which does lead the reader to believe in the possibility. A great read, one that can be enjoyed by all ages, and perhaps even read to little ones, in place or even supporting religious stories. I neglected to mention that I won this book from Goodreads and I sincerely thank Jerome for his generosity I am keen to read more of his works. And there are angels. Five hierarchies of angels, in fact, each with a different job, standing and level of Heaven, marked by the colour of their wing tips. I really would have loved to learn more about them, actually. Especially the fall The Wings of Leo Spencer is a touching and warm-hearted tale of love, family and friendship. Especially the fallen angels, the Grigori, which were only touched upon briefly and also the idea of reincarnation. At first he maintained a steadfast that he was dead. It was so heartbreaking to watch him try to get through to his family and best friend and try to save them even though it seemed impossible.
