Carole Mortimer was born in a very rural section of east England. She was the youngest of three children, with two older brothers. She initially studied nursing, but soon left her studies on account of a back injury to work as a supervisor for a stationary company, where she began writing her first manuscript at a very young age. Carole grew up reading Harlequin Mills and Boon fiction, allegedly starting to read their romance novels at around the age of eleven years old. She became infatuated with this literature, and always had a deep-seeded intention to create fiction such as this.

She sent her manuscript to the Harlequin Mills and Boon publisher in the UK, but this first attempt was rejected. This would start the career of a truly innovative pioneer in the romance literary genre and sub-genres. The Passionate Winter tells the story of Leigh, who falls in love with Piers—the wise and sophisticated father of her boyfriend, Gavin.
First published in the early s, this sequence included two novels, with themes of love, revenge, passion and betrayal. Carole Mortimer has become well known for her provocative, sensual and suspenseful romance novels, such as the Alpha series—which tell stories of powerful men and the women in their lives.

Carole Mortimer has also ventured extensively into the billionaire romance genre, such as in the holiday-themed Billionaire Under the Mistletoe. Her settings often evoke mood through visual, aural and tactile imagery of seasons changing, coinciding with the throes of passion happening within her main characters.

Her characters are often powerful figures the protagonists are predominantly female who face challenges but overcome them as the stories progress. Many of the male characters are prominently vain, often prestigious, and even dangerous in some instances. The series consists of tales of lust and love, with many forbidden romances and unlikely love stories.
At a later stage in her career, Carole Mortimer also began to create historical romance novels, which have been included in the Harlequin Mills and Boon Historical series. Though known for her consistently sensual and suspenseful work, she is very dynamic for a romance author—often venturing into various other sub-genres and categories.
She has been the recipient of some very notable awards, honors and recognitions.

The family live a picturesque and idyllic life, and Carole and her husband are very much in love with one another. Carole loves drawing a fire in her home as the seasons change from summer, to autumn, and winter. After she married Peter, Carole gave birth to four more children with him. All four of these children are male, which Carole jokes about as she is often living in a world heavily populated by male influence. There is apparently about a twenty two year age difference between the youngest of their children and the oldest. Over the course of her career, Carole Mortimer has established an unprecedented stature for a serial romance author.
