While partaking Perley's offering a couple of nere-do wells cowboys approach the camp site demanding the return the sack of gold that the three had ambushed a miner for. Now Tuttle of course denied that he had the gold. Perley killed the two ambushers and told Tuttle he needs to move on down the trail. So Tuttle does, but he's wondering what's really in those sacks of corn, what's is Perley really carrying Because they were coming out of the Black Hills were anyone who had a shovel and a sieve could pan for gold.

Tuttle follows Perley hoping to see what's in those sacks corn, which leads to Tuttle's death. He tried to get Perley by ambushing him at his campsite by shooting Perley in his bedroll, but Perley knew not to sleep so open, he had slept in a different spot, so Tuttle ended up shoot by Perley, and that was the end of Tuttle trailing Perley.

Perley knew Tuttle wasn't any good so he became fodder for the desert and sky creatures. A good reading, lots of soul, characters are scary Who can't love the name "Perley Gates". This is the second 'Perley' book I have read and I must rate this series right hip there with the Mountain Man series.

Young pearly gates goes looking for his grandpa for whom he was named much happens on this journey to find him, Pearly has the propensity to find trouble very quickly and easily , very good western, the author is one of the best western writers IMHO read on Very good story, a continuation of the first book and just as good. Perley sure has shot a lot of people, for someone so innocent.

Can't wait for the next one. Just great books, I have read many books by Johnston and still have another 5 to read yet. I liked the first Pearly Gates book but this one seemed to just ramble on. I would start reading and then it seemed to get boring and then I put it down.

Then thinking I didn't give it a chance, would start reading it again. I have read about half of the book - don't know if I will finish it. A great book. A good example of helping others, before your self. A great Westiern with out cursing and sex. This was a good book to read.
