Sonny bets Roy Lee that he can get Dorothy to kiss him. She pecks him quickly in front of the others but kisses him properly before he leaves. As Sonny makes his way home, he becomes dangerously cold. He comes across a shack on the side of the mountain and its owner, Geneva Eggers. She gives him dry clothes and feeds him, and tells him that she knows his father. When he gets home, Sonny learns that his father rescued Geneva as a child from a fire that killed the rest of her family.

He also learns that she makes her living by prostitution and moonshine. He learns from the newspaper that the spacecraft missed its mark. Sonny continues to study his rocket book, and Quentin comes over to look at it too. The two of them discuss the concepts in the book and decide to build some 'De Laval nozzles' to fly their rockets farther. A pillar explodes in the mine, and Sonny wonders how this can happen, since engineers have carefully constructed them. His mother notes that even Sonny's hero, the aeronautics engineer Wernher von Braun, has had things go awry.

She complains when Homer goes with the rescue team to the pillar, but he insists that he needs to go because he has trained the rescue team. Sonny and the other rocket boys prepare to launch Auk XVI. Valentine Carmina, some of the other Sub-Debs, and Basil are there to watch. The boys do a countdown with their newly-installed phone line in the blockhouse and then launch Auk XVI using battery-powered ignition wires. The flight of Auk XVI is a success, as are the next three rockets.

Basil takes notes and writes a piece on the launches for the county newspaper. Sonny's brother Jim is not impressed. Quentin and Sonny agree that they need to learn calculus and differential equations to progress. Get FREE access for 5 days, just create an account. The rocket boys plead with their algebra teacher, Mr. Hartsfield, to teach them calculus. He reminds them that Big Creek High is a 'football and a coal miner's school,' and he doubts that the principal, Mr. Turner, would approve such a class. Miss Riley accompanies Sonny to his office to make the request.

Turner tells them it is unlikely that the superintendent will approve. Sonny and Quentin are called to the principal's office. Two state troopers are there with a piece of a rocket that they think belongs to the rocket boys. The rocket has caused a large forest fire, and the troopers are about to arrest Sonny and Quentin when Miss Riley intervenes. She spreads out a map and asks the boys where their rocket range is.

They indicate a spot ten miles from Davy Mountain, where the fire occurred. Quentin also points out that the 'rocket' is an aeronautical flare that was probably dropped from an airplane. A week later, they are called to the office again. Turner tells them that a calculus class has been approved for up to six students. Sonny is called into the office again and told that seven students have enrolled in the class, and that his grades are the worst of the seven and he can no longer take the course. Quentin says that he will teach Sonny calculus instead. Meanwhile, business at the mines picks up, and Coalwood prospers.

Sonny's brother Jim is recruited by college football coaches, and Sonny discovers a new bookshelf in his house that contains an old advanced mathematics book belonging to his father. In chapters of October Sky , Sonny learns many things. He meets Geneva Eggers, an acquaintance of his father's who lives in a mountain shack. A pillar explodes in the mine, reminding Sonny that even the most careful calculations can go awry. Importantly, he also learns what he still needs to learn: To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.
