BEYOND THE EYES OF AN ANGEL (The Journey series Book 1)

Book One of a five-part inspirational fiction series, Pewter Angels, by Henry “ it's been a long time since a book has taken me away on a journey that surprises and satisfies beyond the reader's most wishful imaginings, an ending only angels Their eyes met now for a second time and although he felt his face warming.

May 01, Angela rated it it was amazing Shelves: I knew this book was going to be good, but I kept putting it off until the series was complete and now that it is I can finally dive in. And oh did I dive, I read this whole book in one sitting. I loved what Susan did with this book. No one thing outweighs the other. The action, the romance, characters, and the underlying story all are evenly balanced. The biggest plus of this book was that it was different. I loved the idea of Angels being the bad guys.

We all know it's one thing to have an amazing book idea like this, but it's a whole different thing when it comes to having it play out well on paper Angelfall takes place six weeks after Angels have come to earth and started raining hell down on everything. Penryn is our leading lady and right away we get to see that she is what is holding her family together.

Her, her sister, and mother are hiding out when they start to run out of supplies and realize their building will soon be raided by gangs and that they need to move. They decide to leave at night to avoid being seen by both the Angels and the street gangs. As far as characters go both Raffe and Pen are super strong. Both are fighters with such strong personalities. Both of them are very determined characters for very different reasons. Both Pen and Raffe have moved up to my list of my favorite leads. Pen is so unbelievable real and Raffe has built a category all his own. Even the moments when things are so far from being a real life situations Pen's character makes them feel real.

Raffe our leading male and fallen angel is so spot on. He was witty, sarcastic, and had perfect timing. Personally he was my favorite character, and it didn't hurt that he sounded like a total panty dropper. But the truth is that we're all stumbling around in the dark. Sometimes we hit something terrible Sometimes, as we're stumbling along in the dark, we hit something good. I liked how their stories come together, I liked how they interact with one another, and I love their forbidden love.

I found myself getting really caught up in their relationship, more so than I normally would. As far as sub characters go we have her mother, her sister Paige, and the Twins. I loved how insane-o her mother is Like the women is next lever crazy. Besides our two main characters she was probably my favorite, and the person I'm most looking forward to reading about in the next book.

The other sub characters I liked were the twins, Tweedle Dee and Dum. They were the perfect sprinkled in characters. For characters that could have easily became too convenient I never felt their presence was forced. There are a few other subs I wanted to mention but decided to leave out for certain spoily reasons.

The plot of this book is what sets this book apart from others in its genre and what made it a five star read. As I said above not one aspect overshadows another one. The setting is described to perfection. This new worlds details aren't ones you'll have to question. The action is so steady and perfectly spaced out. The ending of this book had twist after twist and one after another I didn't see them coming But that one twist that I really really didn't see coming, had my jaw dropping!!!!!!

Susan Ee comes out of nowhere and punched me in the face!!! View all 4 comments. In fact, the only other book I read that had to do with Angels was Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor and contrary to popular opinion, I didn't like it too much. Therefore, I was a bit wary about reading another book that involved Angels.

But I had high hopes that Angelfall would change my opinion and I'm glad it didn't disappoint. I did not expect the gore and horrific imagery at all in that extent in a young adult novel. Even some scenes made me think, "Woah. This is WAY too much. On the other hand though, I loved the characters! Penryn was such a badass heroine. I loved the fact that she's literally trained in various forms of martial arts and self-defense. She's tough and isn't afraid to get down and kick ass, boy or girl!

He's officially on my list of book boyfriends. And the tension between Penryn and Raffe I was literally visualizing myself nudging these two together. I can't wait to see how their relationship develops in the later books. I can already tell that this is definitely one of those series that gets better with each book! World After, here I come! View all 12 comments. I've read this book 3 times and loved it. Okay so on my 3rd time through I saw a few small issues but I still love the dark originality of the story and Penryn so even though it is probably only really a 4 star read I'll keep the 5 stars up there.

I'm Finished and another 5 star read for me. There is really something for everyone. I really wanted to devour it in one day again. And in that game, my mother is our secret weapon. I adored the slow burn and build of subtle romance between Penryn and Raffe. There is a gradual respect and kinship that forms that could become more than that later.

But there is definitely some heat there even if both of them have other things to worry about at the time. Penryn has some interesting people in her life; an agnostic Angel, a crippled sister, schizophrenic mother, rebellion leader Obi as in Obi Wan and Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Angels have waged war on the humans taking out most major cities.

Humans are on the brink of extinction violence and horrors around every corner. Penryn tries to provide for her mother and sister by scavenging food and hiding in abandoned homes. They have to be careful of the other humans that are doing the same and the gangs that roam the streets. Penryn, all odds against her, has not lost her humanity and tries to help Raffe, an angel under attack by his own kind. She is able to help him but at the loss of her sister Paige who is taken by the attacking angels. She helps Raffe recover from the loss of his wings and hopes that he will help her find her sister.

Some authors use a lot of extra words to get the imagery and the plot across but this was so streamlined that there were no lulls in the story. I found that the plot was leaping and bounding along and I was running along with it to see where we would end up. The concept of the Angels and their culture was so interesting I actually giggled when the term Angel Politics was used since it seemed so foreign to me. Penryn was such an interesting character growing up with a crazy mother has made her more able to deal with the craziness and destruction around her.

The way her mom popped in and out of the story was so fascinating; nothing says love like a pentagram on a dead body. So many things in this story were eerie and sinister but there is always a sense of hope as well. I grew to absolutely love the dynamic between Penryn and Raffe along with the forbidden romance that might be forming there. I was wrapped up in this book the entire time, if you like a good adventure and are not faint of heart because some of the horrors in this book were devastatingly cruel it is a great read.

When you read a book, and in your head you can see the world as vivid as if you were looking outside your window, that is beautiful. Nevertheles A Badass Hidden Gem Nevertheless, who am I to judge? I suck at writing. Not the sweet, cute boy angels we know from other YA books but serious, sword wielding, destroy the human race, type angels.

Ok, so to survive in this world, you need to have some serious skills. Which humans survive in this world? Maybe those with military skills? Maybe those with karate skills? Maybe a young girl of 17 having a homicidal schizophrenic mother; who in an episode of sanity, tells you to do whatever it takes to protect yourself from her moments of paranoia.

It was heartbreaking and was portrayed so realistically. An angel kidnaps Paige in a moment of nasty revenge. To save Paige, Penryn saves another angel in hopes he will guide her to where the angels are keeping Paige. Raffe is the injured angel that Penryn saves. There is so much more to Raffe besides his severed wings, and his cocky attitude. The journey Penryn takes with Raffe to save his sister was action packed, heart wrenching, sad, and even humorous at times.

The growth of the relationship between Penryn and Raffe was slow, but perfectly paced and believable. Some of the dialogue between Raffe and Penryn killed me. I was wondering if somehow, I turned into a 13 year old with my first crush. Here is the thing; I go from not writing a review, to not shutting up. I believe this book is still 2. Go buy this book! Please, because I really want the author to write more and to do this, we need to give her our support!

I wonder if this book would have been better if edited, or if it would have been turned into a boring commercial story as many others out there. I usually don't pick up many angel-books to read, as I find then not quite original, mostly repetitive and usually plain boring with the good vs.

This is not the case Of course, if you search through my reviews you will also find a few interesting or at least entertaining angel-books too. I used to think they were all sweet and kind. The fact is that I really loved every bit of it, and I have to give a big thanks to all my GoodReads book friends, because without them I probably wouldn't have found about it. So thanks you all, you are the best! There were so many things I liked about this story and the characters, that made it hard for me to point to it and say: There is no love at first sight, there are lots of action moments, so many verbal fights, and so much mystery to add up to beauty of it all.

I liked how Penryn was constantly helping Raffe saving his skin, or wings, or his life for a matter of fact, and I liked how he was at first grateful, and by the ending he started to care for her keep in mind that i didn't use the word 'love'. In a world as cruel as that one, it felt right not to have a big romance in the middle of it all. Their relationship was more than that - it was about gaining each-other's trust, and helping out each other, and fighting together but for very different reasons.

It was more about survival and less about emotions, but what can I say, in this way their story got strait to my heart. Reading this book felt more like tasting a drink. It made my head spin, and left me wanting for more. It didn't give all away; and there are so many questions about Penryn's mother who didn't seem so crazy in my opinion, and I am sure she will have a lot to do with what comes next , about Penryn's ability to use an angle sword, about her sister and Raffe that seem to share a bit of the same destiny, about the war between the angels and the humans - it's only the beginning, and I have so many scenarios in my head, I can't wait to see which one is THE ONE.

All in one, a great book and an amazing way to start the reading year. I only have one thing to tell you: I bet you will like it a lot! View all 22 comments. Literally you get all: This was a re-read for me, and I am so glad I did because I ended up loving this book so much more.

Predominant reaction through the whole book: Thus prepare yourself for a list of things I loved. I loved the cast of characters. I thought everyone portrayed so well the despair of living in a broken world. Priorities were different, their attitudes as well, it was all very well communicated to the reader.

Everyone had depth and had me intrigued. I will disclaim and say I love Penryn, for sure one of my top heroines of all time. Raffe was also so enjoyable, especially his humor. Yes, she gets her own section. But let me tell you, I was so blind. I think the highlight should fall on Penryn all the way. I loved having her as our narrator, she was kickass and down to earth. She was loyal, and her priority was always her family which was refreshing. Aso her martial art skills, was hot.

Also, we didn't get descriptions of how gorgeous she was, actually most of the time she was unclean and dirty, which I loved. The bond was so strong and the anguish Penryn felt for Paige was so endearing. Like keeping the chocolate bars, you know. The humor between Penryn and Raffe had me chuckling, it was dark and witty and overall perfect. Also when Penryn called him a bird, that moment was gold. I am usually all for the romance but in this book the way the author managed it was on point.

Yes, there was an attraction, and some scenes, but there was no mention of love view spoiler [okay maybe at the end, it was pretty obvious their feelings for each other, but hey nobody needs to know that until they read it hide spoiler ]. I sometimes let go the fact the first book in a series is a disappointment most of the time, but this was not. Actually many people think this is the best one in the series, I will soon verify that.

The fighting scenes were so clear in my mind, it was not confusing and I was on the edge of my sit always. I really want this to be a tv show. I think these are my favorite action scenes in all YA, I usually get so confused and missed most of the description, but it was nothing like that in this one. Apparently I have a secret starving soul for gruesome stuff. The skill that Susan Ee has to not make me gag gruesome stuff but rather towards basic human instincts, is gold. The angels were not a ball of fluffiness and light.

I really cannot wait for more development in this aspect. Play with my emotions. Like I experienced such contrasting emotions at the same time, it was so cool. Literally just pages, but oh my, I flew through them, it was so addicting and really got all I wanted. So excited to continue. Also, am I the only one waiting for another book from this author? Like hello, gimme gimme. Pinterest layout for this series are so cool. This is my fav.

On the other hand, however, I felt like the world building could have been, well, better. I never really felt like I had a true feel for the state of the world and how the Angels figured into all of that. Also, I typically pr I'm hemming and hawing to myself in regards to how I want to rate this thing.

Angel Eyes

Nothing too graphic, but it's there. The crazyness of the mother seems to imply some child abuse. Some, it borders horror but it compensates with playful banter and action scenes so it's never depressing or too scary Ian Somerhalder as Raffe! Recently one of my best GR friends created a poll for underrated books and I had to mention this one.

Other than some enthusiastic fans in GR, devianart and Tumblr it's not like the fandom is big and it deserves to be one of the biggest fandoms ever! This is one of the best Post-apocalyptic books I've read! It combines paranormal romance, with action. And the best is that you can recommend it to your male friends because it's action packed and the romance isn't central, but it's still a huge part of the book. This book portrays Angels in a different light. They trigger the end of the world and have the humankind hiding for fear of them. Penryn Young is one of the few survivors in the San Francisco Area.

She's fierce and bad ass and one of the best heroines ever. She's somehow in charge of her family, her sister Paige and a very crazy mom. While moving from one post-apocalyptic place to another Penryn witnesses an angel fight. Raffe single-handly figthing four angels more and putting a very good fight at that.

Still outnumbered and weakened when they cut his wings, he ends up under the care of Penryn. Penryn and Raffe have a rough start and they even try to hurt each other at one point, but later they start to trust each other.

See a Problem?

Like in any love-hate relationship book, we find sassy dialogue and funny banter. While we follow Penryn and Raffe in their journey through devasted Sillicon Valley to find Paige we enter a world of horror and destruction and we discover that the angels are fighting for power and that some scheming and political games will affect humans. Very intriguing and very well-woven.

This book is the one that initiated me into indie authors like four years ago. I used to see indie titles here and there and I always thought that they wouldn't be any good because if the big publishing companies didn't want them, it must be because something was bad with indies. That's what I thought by then. Then I read this book and I can tell you: THis books is as good if not better than plenty of YA titles by big publishers. The pace is flawless, the plot is excellent, the writing compelling and it's never boring. YOu may or may not like this book, but you won't get bored. I finished it in one sitting and I have re-read it multiple times.

I'd say the violence in this book might scare readers under 13? I don't know, some times young kids love gory stuff. Other than that and some dark themes I think that this book is good for 14 and older readers. Give this book a chance. If you're not used to read dystopias or post-apocalyptic books I think this one can be a very good option for your first dystopia because it's easy to read, fast-paced, action-packed and still it has some romantic elements.

Penryn and Raffe are a great couple and their sexual tension is off-the charts. I also appreciate that like many YA heroes, Raffe is way more mature than plenty of adult books heroes. He's one of my favorite book boyfriends. This book ends in a huge cliffhanger but thankfully the series is complete. If you're a Kindle Unlimited user don't pass the chance to borrow this book and its sequels. Believe me, you won't get bored.

She grieves her loss of hygiene, she misses her throws, she gets into catfights with other girls, she sucks at seduction, she does what needs to be done to stay safe with her family morality be damned. Penryn's character was realistic, relatable, and well-built. There was not a single point in the book where I was frustrated with her or confused about her motivations. Susan Ee thought up a whole 5 snowy white-winged stars!

Susan Ee thought up a whole post-apocalyptic world involving heaven and hell, characters with complicated pasts, threats previously unheard of, and so much more. Then she sat back and gave us readers only little glimpses of her creation. Angelfall didn't need a cliffhanger to have me panting for the second book as soon as I put down the first.

I just have to know more about everything the author left unsaid. He's an agnostic angel. What more could I possibly ask for? Slow-burning romance, for once! Raffe is stoic and Penryn is a healthy mix of pride and wariness. Both parties take time to reconcile themselves with growing feelings for the other.

Then there's the barrier of species and that whole thing where Raffe's race is trying to drive Penryn's race to extinction. I have faith that Raffe and Penryn can overcome the obstacles in time. Yet another reasons I must have book 2 now! Little Reasons why I loved Angelfall: Creepy yet brilliant identical twins, who are woke enough to allude to Lewis Carroll. There is no sugarcoating in this dystopia.

Be prepared for corpses, child mutilation, human desperation, the works. I love the evil angels trope, can't get enough of it.

It's an interesting twist to the angel genre. Angelfall isn't the best book about angels that I've read, but it has restored my faith har har in the genre. The first half of the book probably garners a In some ways, it's frustrating, because I enjoyed the first part of the book so much, the ending, as action-packed as it was, felt out of place and contrived.

I've got to give props to this book for: Evil, destructive ang It's an interesting twist to the angel genre. Evil, destructive angels out to destroy the earth? So when I heard several people who also don't normally read Christian supernatural books say they enjoyed these books, I decided I'd better give it a try. I'm so glad I did! This book just blew me away. Yes, it takes creative liberties with the angelic world, but all within the bounds of what the Bible tells us about angels and demons. The story ends with a cliffhanger that will surely make the anticipation for book two Broken Wings that much sweeter! This book is a must read! Apr 03, Rose rated it it was ok Shelves: Not bad, but definitely not the best angel book I've had the pleasure of reading.

I think there are certain moments where the book shines with the chemistry and interaction of the characters, as well as the imagery. However, there are quite many awkward pop culture references and transitions that did deter me as I was reading the book.

Did I find it too telling? In some parts, yeah, but I don't think its messages were that heavy handed compared to other reads I've had. I just Initial reactions: I just wish the book could've flowed a bit more organically, and perhaps limited the perspectives a little to make it more cohesive and less telling.

I found something to like in Shannon Dittemore's "Angel Eyes". It tells an interesting story of a girl who moves to live with her father in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy, and comes across a boy with an extraordinary gift and company. But in the mix of things, there's a villain who seeks to use that gift for corrupt means, and it results in a clash that may threaten to tear the boy and girl apart. It is, but at the same time, I was disappointed in the execution of this novel.

If You're Not From The Prairie...

It tries a little too hard to be contemporary - what with several pop culture references including multiple references to Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" that feel non-organic. I understand wanting to appeal to your respective audience, but I think if the novel had toned down with some of these references, it could've been an overall better story in terms of its flow.

The other aspect that impeded flow to a certain extent were the multiple character perspectives. Don't get me wrong, I love reading books from different vantage points - I'm no stranger to them. However, I think the perspective character that really didn't contribute much of anything in the scheme of the story was the villain, despite the religious ties and references.

He was comparatively weak compared to the other perspective characters. The relationship established between the main character, Brielle, and the boy with the healing gift, Jake, is perhaps the best aspect of the novel. Their relationship felt palpable and interesting to watch unfold as Brielle deals with the loss of a friend who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend.

Brielle has a natural chemistry with Jake, and Jake - in spurts, actually proves to be funny maybe relying a little too much on the tutu humor, though - it became repetitive after a while. The overarching novel in terms of its messages and subsequent morals aren't too heavy handed to me, not in terms of the weight of Christian fiction titles in the YA spectrum from what I've read. There were moments toward the end where it felt a bit expositional, and that's something that did detract from my enjoyment, but before that point, most of the text, particularly taken from Brielle's perspective, were nice to see.

The ending also felt a bit rushed to me in terms of events because it was like the bad thing happened and then, like out of a Disney movie - things are a-okay. Not that I'm knocking it for being positive, but I would've liked to see more of the emotional bearings and build-up. That could've been helped a bit with a little more vetting of the characters. I do intend to at least try Dittemore's second book in the "Angel Eyes Trilogy" - to see where she takes these characters and how she expands upon them.

I think those who like books about angels and a clean, nice romance between the leading characters will find something to like in this novel. I only wish it could've improved upon some of its elements a little more. Angel Eyes is a beautiful novel. Shannon Dittemore is truly a gifted writer. Dittemore also gave me a beautiful romance with Brielle and Jake. I love the way Jake cherishes Brielle. His love for her came from the heart with caring and tenderness, and Jake always treats Brielle with respected and praised her for being her own individual and independ Angel Eyes is a beautiful novel.

His love for her came from the heart with caring and tenderness, and Jake always treats Brielle with respected and praised her for being her own individual and independent self in making her choices. But with the cliffhanger ending that Dittemore left me hanging with Jake and Brielle's relationship, I have a feeling Jake's love for Brielle and faith is going to be put to the test in the sequel Broken Wings. I also really enjoyed Angel Eyes being told from Brielle, Jake's guardian angel Canaan, and the demon Damien's point of view, and the last chapter starts the sequel off in Jack's point of view.

I have always loved when an author does this, it makes the story a more intriguing read for me. Brielle's seventeen and a ballerina. After the murder of Ali, her best friend at the art school, Brielle comes back home to a small town life and her father. But now she lives in coldness, the coldness of guilt and unable to forgive herself for not protecting her friend.

She saw the bruises on Ali and she didn't tell anyone. And when Ali's boyfriend escapes from jail, she fears for her own life now, too. But does Brielle really know the truth? And when she does see the truth, will she have enough love to believe, or will she choose her hate? Jake is the new guy who's moved next door to Brielle. He is definitely hot in more ways than one, and how many strong, gorgeous guys are willing to wear a tutu just to spend more time with a girl?

I love the way Brielle and Jake meet. There's nothing like a girl beating her chest like a gorilla and howling to impress the new hot guy in town. Except Brielle didn't know the new guy was watching her, and when Jake gets caught laughing at her, Brielle gives him a lot of altitude. But Jake is willing to take Brielle's altitude and much more…including her heart.

I recommend Angel Eyes as a beautiful, heart-moving read. Sep 25, Jessica Goldenfurpro rated it liked it Shelves: This book focuses on Brielle, who has just moved back to her small town after living in the city. Returning home is not a happy occasion, as her best friend has just died and Brielle blames herself for it. A new guy at school, Jake, becomes close to her and helps bring her out of her depression. After Jake heals her during a storm, Brielle finds out that there's a bigger picture involved.

Both Brielle and Jake are involved in a war between angels and demons. This book was really slow-going. It could be because of the audiobook, as I read much faster than the audiobook, but the first half of this book was very uneventful. It's just Brielle being enormously depressed and Jake trying to talk to her.

There's a few scenes from the point of view of a demon and, I believe, a few angel points of view, but I just found those confusing in the beginning. Also, what happened to Brielle's friend is never mentioned in the beginning, along with why she was in the big city. So, it was a bit infuriating not knowing what happened. The story does eventual pick up the pace, though. And my questions do get answered! In fact, the entire last few chapters are very eventful!

Brielle was an okay character. At first, it was hard to fully connect with her. Her mind is very depressed in the beginning, which I can understand. When Jake began to talk to her, Brielle became a much more likeable character. It was very nice when chapters came along with Brielle having happier moments, mostly thanks to Jake then she would feel guilty for feeling happy, which made me sad again for Brielle. I may not have known what happened to her friend, but Brielle deserves to be happy! As for Jake, he is such a sweet guy! I loved how much he wanted Brielle to be happy again and how he kept trying to make her happy!

There is a romance in this book. As expected, it's between Brielle and Jake. I liked their relationship and I did think it was sweet. It wasn't insta-love, so that's a plus. Though, I'm a bit meh on it. It didn't knock my socks off or give me butterflies. It was just there. The pacing is a bit slow and the romance is okay, but the characters and action-packed ending make up for it.

I'm a little bit unsure about reading the next book, only because my library does not have a copy. If you are a fan of angel books, then you should give this book a try! Mar 06, Brooklynn N. Angel eyes is about an eighteen year old girl who had faced plenty of tradgety. Coming home from a s chool in a big city to come to terms with her emotions in the small town she was born and raised in. But things arent what they seem to be, and she quickly tumbles head first into a secret world nobody knows about. All because of the new boy at school.

This book came across to me as a book about getting over your past. In a way, I was right, buts its so much I had conflicted f Angel eyes is about an eighteen year old girl who had faced plenty of tradgety. I had conflicted feelings about picking this story up and reading it. In a way, im glad I did. Angel Eyes is a love story, and its about Brielle, the main character of the book, coming to terms with her faith. I loved how the characters were portrayed, and how the emotions ran deep.

I started to cry during the first chapter! The sorrow wwas held in check by bits of witty humor and action, and its all wrapped in a blanket of mystery. It quickly turns from a story about a hurting girl when Jake, the new boy, is inserted into the story. He automaticaly becomes 'The guy with a lot of fan girls' and I honestly wish that I culd have gotten more into depth with his story. He rivals Brielle, in my mind, for the hero spot. Hes storng and compassionate, and portrayed with such fiery faith, that the world should prepare for fanclub.

Can anyone say, "Bye-Bye Edward? I loved the way emotions were portrayed, and how it affected each and every one of the characters. The world that Brielle sees is undoubtly beautiful and vividly detailed, and Im proud to say I got an inlet into that world. Overall, Angel Eyes is a captivating read that will leave book lovers breathless, in tears, holding thier hands to their hearts, and viciously anticipating the sequal, where we will once again glimpse the celestial world that so mayb people everyday long to see.

I tried with this one, guys. I love all of the possibilities they explore, from the Miltonian to the Biblical. Unfortunately, Dittemore failed pretty hard in that respect. Not even a third of the way in, I kind of just checked out because there was a moral lesson going on in a public school on how not to end up in a Christian hell. New guy who comes to school who makes fun of her yet they have instant chemistry?

From the YA genre, and nailing a character who is both relatable, and very unusual she's a tortured dancer who's best friend was murdered. Definitely not your average female character!

Not to mention that her main guy character is blissfully unusual too--and totally relationshipgoals. However, Shannon's representation of the spiritual realm has by far been my favorite, and the most unique that I've read. From having her angels equipped with three sets of wings, to incorporating the idea of a halo into the story in a way that totally works, I loved every second of it.

Angel Eyes is one of those novels that not only is intriguing, engrossing and amazingly well written, but its also very thought provoking. It widens your view of the world around you, and the God who has orchestrated every step we take. It also is a book about healing, and touches on real-life issues that many christian authors shy away from. Add on top of that that Shan is one of the sweetest people ever, and you absolutely have to read this book: I've been busy saving pennies for the next one! Feb 15, Kara rated it really liked it. And a beauty brighter than either Brielle or Jake has ever seen is calling them to join the battle in a realm where all human choices start. A realm that only angels and demons-and Brielle-can perceive from Amazon. My review It takes one devastation to change the life you know. It only lasts a moment, but it can affect you for a lifetime. Have you ever experienced something that traumatized you later on? Her best friend is gone and life will never be the same again.

No matter what her friends, her father, and the community do to comfort her and welcome her home from Portland, she is still racked with guilt and grief. She has been traumatized and the first part of the book is about her coping with that grief. Symptoms of this grief are: This book takes place from three point-of-views: What does a human see when wearing an angelic halo?

This book has all of that and gives the perspective from all three types, human; angel; and demon. The setting of this story takes place in both the terrestrial realm earthly and the celestial realm spirit. I also greatly enjoyed her experience of the spiritual realm, the romance between her and Jake and I was relieved to discover that Jake is not an angel even though he was raised by one.

Here is an excerpt that I found to be an accurate description of fear and how it affects people: He transfers to the Celestial and turns his eyes to the room at the end of the hall. Jake sits on his bed, facing the girl. A fog rises like steam from the muck and settles heavily around them. From under her blond hair, the clingy substance oozes, running the length of her body. Her hands shake, desperate to be rid of it.

Fear is pooled on the floor of his room, but is not content with only two victims. Like a heat-seeking missile, it runs into the hall looking for someone, anyone to attach itself to. If human beings could only see the manifestation of such a weapon, they would understand how it paralyzes, literally holding them captive with the glue of it.

Like every being of light, Canaan hates fear. Only celestial eyes can see it for what it is. Like tar, but icy and alive. It clings and oozes. It weighs down its victims until they are either frozen in a trench of indecision or worse—they make the first possible move, no matter how unwise, simply to rid themselves of it. They can inflict it, to be sure, but the tragedy of fear is that since the Fall, humans have held it inside their very being and can unleash it, even unwittingly, on themselves and on others.

I was very satisfied with how Angel Eyes ended. It was a clean story overall. Her mom dies when Brielle is young and that is another form of grief she has to deal with despite having no memory of this parent. She evolves from being victimized—to learning the truth about the God she initially rejects—to becoming a vital part in the battle for His glory.

And the truth shall set you free. This book will be available in May from your preferred retailer. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Mar 28, Allison rated it really liked it Shelves: Very interesting and thought-provoking!

I never really thought about spiritual warfare, and the way Shannon Dittemore wrote about it was very well done. Can't wait for the next two books in the series! Apr 02, Katie rated it really liked it Shelves: Angel Eyes surprised me - in a good way. Having seen the title, the cover image, and the publisher, I knew to expect a religious thread throughout the story. Indeed, many serious subjects were addressed: While some themes were more heavy-handed than others, they were very apropos given the subject. Struggling with extreme grief and guilt in the aftermath of the brutal murder of her best friend, Brielle returns home Angel Eyes surprised me - in a good way.

Struggling with extreme grief and guilt in the aftermath of the brutal murder of her best friend, Brielle returns home from the bright lights of New York City to a podunk little town, where she can't seem to shake the chill from her bones - or her soul. I can't imagine losing a close friend to such a horrible end, and feeling that I was responsible for it all on top of that! I could feel the depth and darkness of Brielle's grief consume me, as she wandered through her hometown and old high school as a ghost of her former self.

I kept waiting for someone, anyone, to step in and help this poor girl. Then, Jake entered the picture.

At first, I wasn't sure exactly what role Jake would play in Brielle's life. He was a bit stalkerish in the beginning, and I admit, I sighed a little when he became the "new hot guy" at school that only had eyes for Brielle. However, as I got to know Jake better, I found him to be charming, genuine, and even a little swoon-worthy. He and Brielle developed a natural rapport and their relationship blossomed slowly and sweetly. I liked how Jake's steady presence and patience urged Brielle to come out of her shell a bit more, as she basked in the sunshine of his warmth - both literally and figuratively.

However, Jake couldn't protect Brielle from everything, or everyone. The thread of mystery that ran throughout the story was certainly intriguing, and I found myself cringing every time Brielle and Jake came in contact with Damien, the main protagonist. This guy is seriously creepy! When Brielle's spiritual eyes are opened to the Celestial realm via a mysterious gold band, gifted to her by Jake, she witnesses the beauty of the heavens and the corruption and darkness that threatens to overtake all that is good in her world.

She quickly learns that not everyone and everything is who or what they seem. Toward the end of the book, a battle of epic proportions between the hosts of good and evil had me on the edge of my seat. While an earthly battle was being waged, a celestial battle was also ongoing, and every time I thought the battle was finally over, another blow was made. I held my breath quite a few times. Even though things seem to settle down in the end, within the last pages, there were quite a few cliff-hangers that made my imagination run wild.

Shannon Dittemore certainly knows how to make her readers turn the pages! Ultimately, what I loved most about Angel Eyes was the way the subject of fear was addressed. Fear paralyzes and seeks to destroy. Fear leads to despair and despair leads to destruction - of our minds, our hearts, our bodies, and our souls. Fear has no place in our lives. The absence of fear is faith - whether it is in a higher power, in ourselves, or in others. This is a message from which we can all learn, whether or not we are religious or spiritually-minded.

Angel Eyes offers a unique, entertaining spin on the typical angel lore, and further impresses with multi-dimensional characters and an intriguing plot line. The story is told from the POV of three characters: Brielle, Jake, and Damien. While some POVs were more entertaining than others, they all served to make me more familiar with the motives of each charater. There were quite a few questions that came to mind while reading Angel Eyes that were left unanswered, and now I am anxious to read the second installment in the series, Broken Wings , which is set to debut in February Kudos to Shannon Dittemore, whose debut novel surpassed my expectations and raised the bar for other similar stories!
