I wish I could find truth, peace and satisfaction in that first bucket. I wish I was wired that way. This column is about my uneasy pursuit, and grand rejection, of the latter. I was 21, and I was asked by a gal named Molly, a representative for the record label started by the bassist by the Goo Goo Dolls. How are you not famous yet? At the time, I suppose I did want to be famous. I was poor, and largely fame felt like a pathway to financial security.

That was something I was very interested in, particularly since I was struggling to scrape together enough coin for Taco Bell. I also saw fame as a sort of validation that I could succeed on my own terms — that I could take my two appreciable skill sets and turn them into something that people liked, something that touched the world, and something that made a difference.
