I love all kinds of books. Flo is a wife, mom of three and hard worker living in the fifties. Life is hard on Flo. Her husband Fred is an abusive, drunk with a bad temper. But times are very different back then. But when Fred loses his job again, he is forced to leave the town he knows to find other work. There everything is almost too good to be true. There where moments while I was reading this book, I wanted to scream at Flo to stand up to her husband. But I realize times where very different back then.

I was happy to read when Flo seemed to grow as a person, and finally started to realize she had to change their life. In the end she did what she had to do, and I actually felt proud of her. And I really felt like I was a part of the story. And I realize even more how lucky I am to be able to life the way I do. Jan 25, Kim rated it really liked it Shelves: , kindle , net-galley. She cleans cruise ships when they dock locally and has always wanted to take a trip herself. She has a very tough home life and thinks conspire against her. It was very interesting to read about life around the dock areas and then at Mondays a company that provides the complete lifestyle for it's employees. It sounded very like the Cadbury area in Bournville where the housing was for the employees and they arranged social events.

We hear from her twin daughters point of view throughout the book and see how they also want to follow their dreams. Flo also wants to climb out of the downtrodden female role and make a name for herself. This was a debut novel and I would try another book by Sue Wisher.

However, her husband Fred, scarred mentally from losing both of his parents in a bombing raid, takes his solace in drink and hitting Flo, and he has other ideas. After Fred is sacked from the Emotional, sweeping and un-putdownable! She captures the voices of three very different women, linked by blood, and their experiences of life in post war Britain. Flo, and her twin daughters Jeannie and Babs take turns to tell the story, and we experience life through their eyes throughout the novel.

There are moments of humour in sharp counterpoint to the drama that balance the narrative elegantly, and the three voices work well together to explore the contrasting experiences of three women who have very different expectations from life. The supporting cast of women are all beautifully realised, too, and demonstrate the rigid social hierarchy of the time beautifully. Maggie Monday, especially, is a complex and layered character whose interactions with Flo are a real highlight in a novel full of highlights.

Above all, this is a story about women, and the challenges they face to realise their dreams and desires against a backdrop of a patriarchal and deeply unfair system.

The men in this book range from the downright dastardly to the noble; the football game that pits them all against each other is a stunningly recreated set piece that shows the contrasts between them perfectly. Flo has a choice to stay and try to keep her family together at the expense of her own happiness or to follow her dreams. Flo has the perfect chance to escape, she is a cleaner on cruise ships bound for Australia and it's not long before she dreams of escaping on one of them to start her life overseas. Inevitably she has to make a choice for herself and her children and she does what she has to do.

Good characterisation, very atmospheric and also portrayed well what life was like at the end of the war for women and also for the men who were lucky to come home alive but were scarred by war. A good 4 star read. I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a nice read. An easy story with little to think about but I found it a little predictable at times. I really wanted so much more for the female characters in the book and although it was probably very typical of women in that time period I felt the author could have done more with the main character when her husband took on more of a lead role in the story with hers in the back ground somewhere.
