So her family is distant, but she loves them anyway.

Princess Before Dawn

Well on the day of her sister's 16th birthday, everyone is on alert for a spindle for the dreaded "finger-pricking" , but one gets through all of the security, by being disguised as something else. And everyone starts to fall asleep! Well the resourceful princess realizes that it might just be up to her to find a prince to kiss her sister after all - who is going to TELL anyone that the castle is asleep?? So she sends the portcullis crashing down to protect everyone inside , then sneaks out through a secret passage. Out in the village, she encounters a guard who had been running errands, who then insists on accompanying her on her quest.

So the two of them set out to inform her sister's most likely "true love" the prince who'd been most interested in her sister. Well after informing him, it occurs to our plucky heroine that he might NOT be her sister's true love after all, she doesn't think much of him and her sister's only been "polite" to him.

So she decides to inform ALL of the princes she can find. Which results in ALL of them rushing to the castle.

But they all fall asleep under the effects of the spell. So our heroine has to lead them in, a la the style of "The Princess Who Couldn't Laugh" and the goose boy. But that isn't the only reference you'll find: Now, personally, I love fairy tales. But I love new incarnations of them even more. THIS story is clever, refreshing, a quick but enjoyable read, and thoroughly entertaining. I am not a "young adult", so probably am not the target audience, but I loved it nonetheless, and am keeping it in my collection.

I highly recommend it. Baker you've done it again!!!! Gwen Sleeping Beauty falls asleep after pricking her finger on her 16th birthday. Her younger sister Annie and a handsome young gaurd Liam go on a quest to find Gwens true love to wake her up. Only problem is they aren't sure which prince is Gwens true love. On their travels they encounter the bear from Snow White and Rose Red and at one point Annie is locked up in Rapunzels tower and Rapunzel is gone.

Anyway I'm not going to tell you any more. If you like fairytales and if you like rewritten fairytales and books written by E. Baker you'll love this book. I think this book is so good that it deserves a sequel because I want to know whether Gwen and Annie get married to their true loves and get embroiled into more adventures.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This is a delightful book for adults, teens, and preteens. It isn't for little children, but they can wait a few years. While they're waiting, they can read "The Paper Bag Princess," a charmer along the same lines for younger children. The characterizations are delightful, and the rapid succession of fairy-tale tropes that the heroine encounters in her quest kept me chuckling throughout. Although at the beginning, the princesses get the major billing, this is a great book on courtship and courtesy for girls AND boys.

Manners, ingenuity, and courage help the princess and her guardian, Liam, escape from encounters with an assortment of fairy tale good guys and bad guys. I'm raising boys, so it's good for me to read them books that show the contrast between proper and unseemly conduct for young men and women. Plenty of adventure, some double-crossing relatives, and a happy ending. No bad language whatsoever. A little caution needed when you get to Rapunzel's tower -- You could infer some naughty behavior into that scenario. I purchased this book when I was craving a quick and fun read.

It completely satisfied and I found it to be a cute tale. While The Wide-Awake Princess is a book aimed at younger readers, I didn't think that the author "dumbed" anything down. It was quick, fun, and lighthearted. Everything works out in the end and Annie is a wonderful character who it is easy to cheer for. Don't be alarmed by the princess story, it is not about her great hair or her graceful dancing.

Rather it is about strength and loyalty, and we could all use a little more of that in our lives. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 3 months ago. Published 6 months ago. There was quite a bit of magic, though not too dark, and she kept it mostly upbeat despite all the danger the characters were in throughout. There were so many funny lines and scenes to keep it from being too scary for a kids book. The scariest bits were the flock of crows that followed them everywhere and caused terrible trouble and even came after and scratched Annie terribly.

They were a little creepy, but only a little An interesting twist was the fact that Annie can diminish the powers of those around her. So the beauty of her own sister and anyone trying to cover up with magic dissapears. In one respect I liked this, as it teaches Annie to see through outer beauty to the person beneath.

But I didn't care for the meanness of Annie's sister and friends who treat her rudely and try to keep Annie as far away from them as possible so they can still look lovely and not have their magical beauty fade. Still there are some good lessons there I thought the author shared well enough. Not something I would reccomend to everyone, but for a light-hearted fun read if you don't mind a bit of magic in your fairytales, then you'll really enjoy it. The only problem I had personally with it was for a children's read I thought there was a great deal too much kissing but at least the characters were engaged!

Mar 27, Nerissa rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: As seen on RoseBlackthorned Reviews Review: I received this book as an ARC from netgalley. I never read the 2nd book because I didn't know it was a series but I remember how much I loved and raved about the first book. I can still remember the beautiful tale that E. Baker spun ha spun ha! You will understand it if you read the first book! Once again, I was NOT disappointed. Baker never fails to write the best children's books ever. In the 3rd volume of the Wide-Awake Princess series, we follow Annie's point of view again.

This time, we meet her friend Snow White who needs her help so she sets off with the all wonderful Prince Liam fangirls!!! Along the way, she finds out that someone else is following her ahemevilahem. Now, Snow White's problem is that her father wants her to marry someone right away. Basically Snow White and Annie set up challenges for the suitors who show up. However of course evil forces threaten to destroy everything. Thank you Bloomsbury for allowing me to read an ARC. I really enjoyed it! Baker has written a beautiful and inspiring book which had me reminiscing over the times when I would just sit in my bed for hours and read fairy tales all day long.

I haven't had that much fun reading a book in a long time! Do go and read this book! I guarantee you won't be disappointed! May you feel as much joy as I do reading this book! Feb 20, Elizabeth rated it liked it Shelves: The Bravest Princess is quite a different book than the first two, I thought. The first two were a great conglomeration of fairy tales with situational and often dry humor that made them really funny. This one had less of both.

It had a few nods to some fairy tales, but most of it was using the fairy tale characters that had already been introduced in the first two books. The final revelation of the villains felt a little abrupt, too. I will say, though, that the crows were scary. When they attacked Annie in her room, I got shivers. Overall, The Bravest Princess was a little disappointing to me. Also, the crows were scary. I've been a fan of E. Baker's books since I read the Frog Princess and all of the following books many years ago.

They are cute and simple, and absolutely perfect for fans of fractured fairy tales. Princess Annie is special. She is completely untouched by magic, and can alter magic with her touch. Pretty impressive if you live in a fully magical world. This time around she has I've been a fan of E. This time around she has to help Snow White while protecting herself from an evil witch that is determined to cause her harm. While this probably isn't my favorite of the series so far, it was still fun to read.

I enjoy reading about Annie's adventures. Adding in the banter between Annie and Liam is always a bonus, too. Unfortunately, this time around I didn't feel the magic between Liam and Annie. I wish there was more to the plot that included them together.

It always felt like they were working together to reach the same solution, but doing it from across the room. There is still plenty of the endearing elements that you expect from E.

Baker's books in The Bravest Princess. The smoochy smoochy factor is low, but warm fuzzies are abundant. You'll enjoy reading through the plot and picking out elements from favorite fairy tales. You'll also appreciate the surprise twist at the end. Geared toward younger readers, this is definitely a series perfect for 4th-6th grade girls.

Dec 11, Heidi rated it liked it. In the latest installment of A Tale of the Wide-Awake Princess series, Princess Annie finds herself under attack by forces of nature that are only indirectly being controlled by magic, and all her usual defenses are not always effective. This added layer of danger forces Annie to admit and confront her own fears. This fractured fairy tale does a great job of incorporating well-loved characters like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, however, it falls short in really empowering young female readers.

This series is a good choice for readers who enjoy fantasy and the fractured fairy-tale style of writing. Oct 20, Advika V. Princesses really can be brave! They don't always have to sit around and wait on their princes, instead they can be the hero of their story just like Annie. Baker proves to us girl-power! Oct 30, Kayla Loewen rated it it was amazing Shelves: Even better than the second. Jun 30, Ashley rated it really liked it. My 3 year old loves to pick out chapter books for me to read aloud to them and picked this one up at the library The library marked it a 5th-grade reading level but I think the audience would be more toward year-old girls.

Princess Annabelle is a strong female lead.

About Princess between Worlds

The characters weren't as dimensional as some of the middle-grade level books that I've read though. The world was nice though and felt real. There was a lot of kissing though which some parents might not like their young to middle-grade daughters to read about. Overall it was a sweet book though. I will admit, this is the first that we read in the series.

I don't like jumping into a series part way through but this one was ok to do that with. There was a touch of back story that helped us jump in without so much that we would have been trudging through. I feel that the stakes could have been raised even a bit more but there were some scenes that really stood out in that way.

This is the third book in the Wide Awake Princess series. It follows Annabell, sleeping beauty's sister, who is cursed so that no magic good or bad can touch her. In this book she goes to help her friend, Snow White, with a problem involving the escape of Snow White's wicked stepmother and her fathers desire thats she get married as fast as possible. Along the way someone starts coming after Annabell indirectly. She is immune to magic lighting bolts, but not the tree s the knock down.

This serie This is the third book in the Wide Awake Princess series. This series is wonderfully jam packed with fairy tales. Aug 25, Lara rated it really liked it Shelves: I have just loved this series.

  • It's just fun , y'know? Lots of characters coming back from the first two books, plus some new ones to introduce. We had adventure and suspense the ravens watching were actually a little spooky - I was certainly intrigued! And romance of course Annie and Liam, but also Snow White's story, which had a good lesson about forgiving and learning the whole story.

It would have been nice if the princes in the contest were a little more balanced, but how often are fairy I have just loved this series. It would have been nice if the princes in the contest were a little more balanced, but how often are fairy tale characters really reflections of actual people? I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, with Annie's own wedding what could possibly go wrong?! Already requested it from my library! This latest installment in the series continues to be above average. I enjoy seeing Annie's role in her family expand and evolve.

As always, it's great fun to see her interact with classical fairy tale story lines. That angle to the story beefed up the plot somewhat. The prince contest for Snow White's hand was a bit predictable, but that's not always a bad thing in middle gr This latest installment in the series continues to be above average.

Jun 11, Jodi rated it liked it. This is the 3rd book of the Wide-Awake princess series, and I quickly found out that the first two books should be read first to understand what's going on. I still read it out loud to my kids, and they liked the twists and turns of the plot. A great pre-teen novel. I don't know why but I just love E.

D Baker's books are simply fairytale retellings but they are the best books in the world. I love her books. I would recommend her books to 9 - 12 year old girls. These books are the best. Yay what a contest And wild that this was so much darker!! Like hoo witches and terrifying at Annie being less in control with things! Apr 29, Hannah S. The first two were way better.

Annie's sister Gwendolyn is finally marrying her prince, yet Annie cannot help but still feel like an outcast as many of the guest avoid her, afraid of being as beautiful as they are made by magic. But when her friend Snow White calls on her for help, she and Liam travel to her kingdom to help her find her missing evil stepmother and find true love.

Will they be able to rise the challenge and find the evil que The adventures of the Wide-Awake Princess continue in this sweet mash up of fairy tales. Will they be able to rise the challenge and find the evil queen before it is too late? A humor laced fairy tale, from E. Funny and sweet, this book was a welcome read for me, as I have long been a fan of E.

Bake since around the time that her hit Frog Princess was a brand new book. I think my favorite thing about this book was how all of the princes were vying of Snow White's hand, in their own silly and at times insincere ways. Especially as some of the princes were returning characters from previous book in the series, some of them even had once tried to court Gwen Sleeping Beauty.

One of my favorite characters had to be Dog, who was of course a dog, but he could talk. And he had a way of saying things in just a typical guileless, straight out honest way that I thought perfectly captured his character. Overall this was a great installment in the series, and for me it was a bit of a throwback to when I was younger and read these types of books more frequently. Definitely a fun book for fans of princesses and fairy tale adventure! Aug 13, Elizabeth Chang rated it really liked it Shelves: As the last book in the series, I expected something amazing from this book, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I read all the books far apart, so in each book, I had a bit of trouble at the beginning getting used to the characters and plot.

But after that, I enjoyed the books very, very, much. I loved the idea of Annie helping her friend Snow White find a husband through tests of compassion, honesty, bravery, and other traits Snow White desired in As the last book in the series, I expected something amazing from this book, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I loved the idea of Annie helping her friend Snow White find a husband through tests of compassion, honesty, bravery, and other traits Snow White desired in a husband.

And I loved reading about how the princes went about proving they were capable of these things, even though most were either lying or exaggerating their story a great deal. It was still so much fun to read.
