I don't know about you guys but when boyf 2 stabs you and tries to kill you, you don't usually want to date them after that. Or am I just totally out of the loop?? Most authors have their own creative spin on their own tale and I definitely enjoyed A Beautiful Dark.

The novel starts out slow. That to me was frustrating because I like to know everything at once. On the eve of her 17th birthday, her best friends throw her a surprise birthday party. If you could find a novel where the main character falls in love with two guys at the same time then this is a great example. Each boy makes her feel different and loved at the same time. This ending was a definite cliffhanger. I want to know what happens next! Nov 26, Shelby rated it liked it. I am finally done reading this book. It seems like it too k me forever to read it. I am not sure if I am going to read the rest of the series. If I do then I hope it is way better than this book.

Jan 10, Beckie Stevenson rated it really liked it. Just finished but I need my Zzzzz's, so review to come tomorrow! We first see Skye as she enters a cafe and she's immediately surrounded by people and friends and then we also meet the two boys in the same chapter. I just thought the characters should have been seeped in a little slower at the beginning.

Once I got over that initial Just finished but I need my Zzzzz's, so review to come tomorrow! Once I got over that initial influx and understood who was who I kind of liked them. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about Skye. I don't dislike her but I don't really love her either.

I don't think I know enough about her if I'm honest. I get that she was going through a bit of a confusing time but I wanted to know more about how she feels about things. What does she think? Why does she think that way? Overall I enjoyed this book. I have read many books with this sort of story but that's not the author's or this books fault. It was well written and generally light hearted. The only thing I will say and is that I wanted more descriptions about particular things that happened with a certain someone.

It was just a bit like 'so, yeah, that happened and then I just woke up the next morning. What was it like? How did it make you feel? What was said afterwards? Oh, and I really liked the bickering! If the characters had been introuduced a little slower and if I understood a little more about how Skye felt then I would have given this book the full 5 stars.

I will definitely read the next book and will recommend it to any of my friends that are looking for something that is quite light and easy to read! This is not how this book is going to leave me hanging! How am I going to wait for the next book? I'm utterly speechless and in awe of how this book has left me feeling! I needed to know what was going on in Skye's life and why had all this happened to her and who she is and what she is capable of. The story kept me captivated, intrigued and wanting. I desperately needed the puzzle pieces to fit and just when you think you have it all figured out BOOM they get shuffled up again leaving you wondering what next?

The suspense was driving me mad but in a good way. Oh man he is totally charming, funny, charismatic, a big time flirt with a smart mouth and who is deliciously sexy and very delectable. OMG he is amazing and just thinking about him as i write is setting my stomach on fire Skye had no chance in hell when he entered her life and she thought she was strong enough to resist him, think again.

The temptation was too strong and she succumbed, like any normal gal would do lol. And then in walks Devin to complicate matters. This love triangle had me wondering and guessing at times and I never really knew which way Skye was leaning to go until the very end when I was shocked as hell as to what Devin did! I feel for Devin I really do but man what he did was beyond forgivable and I truly wonder what will come of this in the next book.

Until then I have to wait in the beautiful dark just like Skye and hope we get the answers we need! Can't wait bring it on!!! View all 8 comments. Aug 13, Debbie rated it really liked it. Oct 14, Hannah rated it it was ok. When I first started this book, I read the first chapter and decided I didn't need to finish it. Two days later, I went back to it and didn't put it down until I finished. It's one of those books that has a girl find out she's a supernatural creature and has two equally attractive boys from opposing sides try to win her over.

If you're not a fan of those, don't read this book. I was in the mood for something simple to read and this was simple enough. Some of the characters were really annoying. She was annoying and had some affect on the plot but was just an annoying character all over. Devin and Asher were so hot and cold. Devin reminded me of early Castiel from Supernatural. While I'm partial to Devin, throughout the book both boys were given almost no faults other than being annoying. All of Skye's other friends seemed like background noise that was just thrown in when it was convenient.

They were the characters that weren't extremely annoying, but they got the smallest amount of page time. This book ends on a cliffhanger, which means I should get the second one from the library just to know what happens. I'll be getting the second and third books from the library, but if my library didn't have them I wouldn't go buy them.

A Beautiful Dark

Not only that, more weird stuff is happening. Skye was definitely likeable. What I found moving was that it was all for her parents, who died when she was six. Mostly she was tough and tried to get on with things as best she could, but occasionally that vulnerability would show.

It was sweet to see how much they loved each other. There was a bit of confusion in her when it came to Asher and Devin, which I can see putting some readers off, but I think there was a heavy incline toward Asher. This brings me nicely to the two angels, or as Devin corrects Skye, Malakh , meaning messenger. Devin, blonde-haired, blue-eyed and white-winged as he is, belongs to the Order, the faction responsible for peace.

In a way I feel bad for being critical of him, given that he has no choice — literally. In the Order, you either set the rules, or you follow them, and Devin falls into the latter category. There were times when another side to him emerged, but no sooner did that happen than he was back to his old self. But then again , the last time we see him in the book Asher, our traditional tall, dark and handsome, is a Rebel.

He was cheeky, flirtatious, always joking around but also serious at times — in short, completely lovable. Neither side is good and neither side is bad, something the author explores well here. Davies keeps you on your toes. Overall, this book completely surpassed my expectations. With an engaging plotline, some great characters and a killer ending no pun intended ;D , this is definitely one to get your hands on. This review is also posted on my blog. I had such high hopes for this story but it fell far short of my expectations.

The story developed very slowly which I found frustrating. The characters lacked any depth and I had no feelings for them in any way. The only part I did like was the new mythology the author created about the supernatural beings. Jun 08, Lea rated it really liked it Shelves: To be perfectly honest, this book was just OK for me; I just really wasn't a huge fan. I'm not sure if it's the genre, but sometimes I feel like if you've read one fallen angel book you've pretty much read them all. Now yes, there are some that are better than others, for example I loved Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick but then I wanted to hurl Fallen by Lauren Kate against a wall.

A Beautiful Dark falls somewhere in between those two extremes for me. The biggest let-down in this book for me was To be perfectly honest, this book was just OK for me; I just really wasn't a huge fan. The biggest let-down in this book for me was the characters. The plot was good, the pacing worked well, the suspense built up, and some of the writing was really good.

But unfortunately, I thought that the character development was extremely lacking. So, let's talk about the characters first since this is where I had the biggest issue. The main character is Skye Parker, who just turned seventeen. Skye's favorite food to get in the school cafeteria is a turkey sandwich and an apple. Why do I mention this, you ask? Well, because I think it sums her up in a nutshell-- she's sort of unremarkable and bland-- nice and appealing, but not terribly awesome or interesting. Like a turkey sandwich. I know, I'm a freaking genius with the analogies.

So anyways, Skye is also good at skiing, she wants to go to Columbia or some Ivy League school, and she predictably becomes obsessed with the two new boys that move to her Colorado town, Asher and Devin. The one trait that I was not a fan of with Skye was that she was also extremely self-centered to the point of me wanting someone in the story to give her a nice swift kick in the pants. Oh yes, and sometimes her eyes turn into molten silver -- now that part? Not gonna lie, that was pretty freaking sweet. Then we have the two hunky boy interests, Asher and Devin, who are both very mysterious and apparently yum-a-licious.

Asher is supposed to be the dark, brooding bad boy and Devin is the quiet, nice one. Once again, it's not that I didn't like these two characters but they just weren't very memorable. Physically they looked different, but they were pretty much the same otherwise. Asher was more of a jerk I guess, but that's about it. And really, I wasn't buying Skye's relationship with either of them. Cassie is Skye's best friend and holy crap, was she annoying. It's almost as though we're supposed to compare the main character to this chick and think, "Wow! Skye is like so much smarter!

Skye wants to go to an Ivy League school and Cassie is a brain-dead idiot! Skye wasn't much of a smartypants either, so unfortunately, making the main character's best friend dumb as dirt really didn't make the main character look like an Einstein in comparison. Finally, Dan and Ian were sort of just thrown into the mix as Skye and Cassie's guy friends to bring in some more romance and drama. They were more of a side-note than anything else it seemed.

So onto the wonderful Love Quadrangle-- oh yes, you heard me right! And honestly, this kind of bugged me. Oh crap here comes another rant, watch out. Skye was completely obsessed with both Asher and Devin, going back and forth ad nauseum about who she liked more, even though she just met them and knows almost nothing about either of them. And then with Ian-- who by the way has been her best friend since forever and really cares about her-- she completely ignores him and is just like, "Oh good for him for finally finding a nice girl who actually gives him the time of day!

I really felt bad for Ian. Fortunately, the plot and the ending are what made this book work for me. Joceleyn Davies is one serious story-teller, that is for darned sure! I don't want to give anything away, but I really did love the overall story about who Skye really is and what her powers are, and who is good and bad-- I could have done without all the high school drama, but honestly, the last chapters totally had me on the edge of my seat, and the ending was a major cliff hanger that just had me dying to get my hands on the sequel!

The book did a fabulous job of building up the mystery and suspense to the plot-- pretty much nothing major is revealed about who Asher and Devin are until around page , and since I had not read any reviews about this book before picking it up, I had no clue what was going to happen. I won't give too much away here, but I personally liked the slower build up before revealing the main plot twist. While some aspects of this book were a bit predictable, I really enjoyed not knowing right away what was going to happen.

In the end-- even though the characters really did nothing for me and I thought that some parts were slightly cliche-- I did enjoy reading A Beautiful Dark. If there had been some greater character development, I would say that this was actually a really good book. Unfortunately, some things did fall flat. I would recommend this one to any angel book lovers out there, and to anyone who loves those tricky love triangles, because this one has tons! Lea LC's Adventures in Libraryland View all 7 comments. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait to buy and read the next in the series. It kept me guessing throughout, literally on the edge of my seat. And what a cliffhanger and complete shock there at the end Feb 02, Midnite rated it it was ok Shelves: When she's upset or emotional, her grey eyes become silver.

And sometimes she can make heaters get really hot. Maybe it has something to do with the new boys at school. Asher is dark and playful while Devin is blond and polite. Very quickly, Skye thinks she feels something for Asher, which is weird because she hasn't felt anything special for a boy since dating Jordan. Skye may be feeling something for Devin, too. Devin is shy, quiet and kind; so u Skye is changing. Devin is shy, quiet and kind; so unlike Asher who flirts with anything in a dress and can't hold a serious conversation.

Done well, any story can be enjoyable, including another story about two "boys" at odds and the girl they are supposed to protect. But so many paranormal teen novels read like paint-by-number books these days. Two beautiful boys appear and seem to only have eyes for our heroine. Our heroine is attracted to the seemingly dangerous one because, well, dangerous boys are more interesting than shy polite ones. And then, the Big Reveal is, well, revealed, and we learn our heroine has powers and the boys aren't who they appear to be. Actually, I don't have a problem with that.

I like when the gorgeous new boy only has eyes for the narrator of the book I'm reading; sometimes I like when there are two of them. But most of the time the writing is unsubtle and unsatisfying and the characters do everything you expect them to do because you've read it all before. I rolled my eyes at the fact that Skye is an orphan being taken care of by her "aunt" who conveniently has a job that takes her away from home for several days at a time.

But if you're going to write a character that has little to no adult supervision at home, please let those gorgeous boys visit her at that empty house a lot. What's the point, otherwise? One party doesn't cut it. Skye has three close friends who are portrayed well in the book. Cassie is fun and it's so obvious who she's in love with that I lost patience with Skye very early on when she didn't figure it out. Ian was kind of pathetic with his unrequited love for Skye, but I liked him and was rooting for him to find someone he could love.

There's an admittedly adorable snowball fight between Skye and Devin at one point in the book and the scene made me wish Devin had been a little more interesting earlier on. The snowball fight takes place just a few pages after Skye has decided she thinks she's falling for Asher, but during the fight she finds herself wanting to fall into Devin's incredible blue eyes.

I can't say falling for two boys at once is unbelievable, but it does make a character who is already lacking in originality seem even more unoriginal. I wanted Skye to do or feel something I hadn't already expected her to do or feel. Skye is 17 and Asher is older, so When a 17 year old girl learns a paranormal being has been watching her for a very long time, shouldn't a romance with that individual immediately come off the table? Why don't more of our teen heroines get icked out by the idea that an ageless being finds her desirable?

Shouldn't some warning bells go off, even just for a few days? This happens in A Beautiful Dark and it was at this point I knew my rating couldn't be more than 2 stars, no matter how the book ended. A Beautiful Dark (A Beautiful Dark, #1) by Jocelyn Davies

Skye begged her friends I can't remember the last time I felt so strongly about a book ending like I am about this one. Skye begged her friends not to give her a "surprise" birthday party, but of course when do friends really listen. At her party is where everything changes. She meets this guy that she was drawn to immediately. It was like "De ja vu" with Asher. His whole demeanor annoyed her but she was attracted to him. Then there's Devin, his whole character is calm and relaxed except when he's around Asher.

You can slice the tension in the air with a knife when those two are around. They are complete opposites but the one thing they have in common is they both show interest in Skye. Asher and Devin came to town to help Skye. The problem is that Skye is unaware of their purpose for their visit. All the while spending time with both of the boys, she starts having feelings for both.

Who can resist a bad boy? Then there's Devin, he has a different effect on her. She likes the way she feels when she's around him. The confusion of having two cute guys seeking for your attention. But there's more that meets the eye when it comes to both Asher and Devin. Damaris came to me and suggested we read this book together. And when we started, we read it so fast we didn't get to talk about it in between the book. That's how good it was. This book is amazing! A definite "Good Choice for Reading.

Her parents died when she was six and she lives with her Mom's best friend. Now two new boys are in town, dark confident sarcastic bad boy rebel Asher, and nice quiet calm shy good listener guardian Devin, who appear to be cousins that are fighting over her. And that is the whole book.

The two of them reveal themselves to be a Probably a 3. The two of them reveal themselves to be angels on opposite sides who were both sent to protect her and find out which powers she possess because she has one parent that came from both sides, the rebels and the guardians. While I liked Devin better, both the guys were rather annoying and I myself would have ditched them both for Ian, the sweet human guy that has liked Skye forever. They both so clearly have ulterior motives and she shouldn't trust either of them but of course falls for both of them.

I'm like why are they sending two young guys to watch her anyway? How about some female angels? But yeah the angels thought of that and wanted the guys to seduce her onto their side. They want to force her to choose a side but both sides suck. If you don't love a love triangle you will definitely hate this book because instead of it being a story with a love triangle it is more like a love triangle with some story thrown in to try to make it into a book.

I might read the next one out of curiosity. I personally liked Asher a lot more because he is dark, handsome, and the banter and on the other hand the tender moments they have. Devin just never really seemed to get his chance to really shine, and though they have moments they seem to come too late after Skye and Asher connected. But Skye is conflicted s 3. But Skye is conflicted so there is still the triangle, but my personal choice has been made, and it would take a lot to change my mind in the next one.

I enjoyed Skye coming into her own and learning and mostly being really frustrated by her powers and learning about her history. Her parents died when she was little so of course there were things that she didn't know about them, but the two new boys, that are vying for her heart and her destiny shake everything in her life up and make her open her eyes to who her parents were and what that means for her.

I will def be continuing with this series. With steamy romance s and a main character I felt for so I devoured even though the premise isnt the most original. Feb 02, Sarah rated it it was ok Shelves: I stupidly spent money on a copy of this book. Give me a break. And once again I fall victim to a pretty cover, with a rubbish book behind it.

It was dull, it was predictable, and in places it was downright cringe-worthy. It particularly annoyed me that these freaks had no free will and seemed to think that that was a good thing! There was some romance, because obviously any guy with or without a heartbeat wanted her for himself, which was so irritating!
