The virus, which resembles an advanced form of Ebola , causes victims to slowly bleed to death until eventually "you've become a viral bomb. And when you explode, you blast everyone around you with the virus". Fourth wave: Silencers: After the 3rd wave, the remaining human population tries desperately to survive off whatever resources remain by looting, all the while clinging to the hope that "the people in charge", wherever they may be, are working toward a solution. Eventually, this belief seems legitimate when an impressive battalion of soldiers with functioning vehicles arrives at the makeshift camp where Cassie, Sam, and her father are staying.
The soldiers and commander, however, only appear interested in the children and promptly load them onto waiting buses before ordering all the adults into the camp barracks. Once the humans are surrounded, Commander Vosch orders a massacre and kills everyone at the camp. Cassie, however, narrowly escapes and witnesses her father's death by Vosch's hand. At this moment, the 4th wave becomes clear: not all "humans" are actually humans. Critical reception of the book has been very positive. The first wave wipes out all electricity; the second wave causes natural disasters; the third wave is a killer virus which takes out Cassie's mom, a nurse , and so on. Vowing to reunite with her brother, Cassie wanders alone on the streets until she's shot in the leg by a sniper and saved by the mysterious and attractive Evan Walker Alex Roe.
Although Moretz is certainly up to the task of playing Cassie, from the movie's very first scene, the on-screen Cassie bears little resemblance to the Cassie of the page, especially in the set up. Everything that made Cassie and Evan's slow-burning connection feel realistic on the page has been cut, including the humor.
In fact, the humor is missing from most of the film. Unfortunately, some of the other supporting characters from the book barely get a couple of lines between them, including Tony Revolori as Dumbo, Parish's intelligent squad-mate.

They think we think like they do! Forget about flying saucers and little green men and giant mechanical spiders spitting out death rays. Forget about epic battles with tanks and fighter jets and the final victory of us scrappy, unbroken, intrepid humans over the bug-eyed swarm. The truth is, once they found us, we were toast.

I see how it could happen, though, eventually. Remember the dinosaurs? Totally alone—and likely to stay that way—until the 4th Wave rolls over me and carries me down. When my brain checks out and begins to skip like a scratched CD. Not Cassie for Cassandra. Or Cassie for Cassidy. Cassie for Cassiopeia, the constellation, the queen tied to her chair in the northern sky, who was beautiful but vain, placed in the heavens by the sea god Poseidon as a punishment for her boasting. They just thought the name was pretty. Even when there were people around to call me anything, no one ever called me Cassiopeia.
It drove me crazy. When I was turning twelve—four years before the Arrival—my father gave me a telescope for my birthday. On a crisp, clear fall evening, he set it up in the backyard and showed me the constellation. Mom always told him it was his best feature, so he trotted it out a lot, especially after he started going bald. His breath so close, the stars of Cassiopeia so very far away. The stars seem a lot closer now. Closer than the three hundred trillion miles that separate us. Close enough to touch, for me to touch them, for them to touch me. That sounds crazy.
Am I crazy? Have I lost my mind? Like good and evil.
