The island is an outstanding example of architectural styles of the significant history of Rhodes. The medieval town mixes Byzantine, Medieval, Italian and Ottoman influences and create an atmospheric complex of magnificent buildings. The most important monuments of the area include the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, one of the best preserved medieval streets of Europe, the Hospital of the Knights, the Colloquium Building, the Ottoman Buildings, the Gothic Churches and the oldest surviving church of Lady of the Castle. The Monastery of Tsambika is an impressive byzantine monastery located close to the village of Archangelos.

The old church dedicated to Virgin Mary is built on top of a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

According to the legend, any woman who is incapable of having children should visit the old church and pray to the Virgin. In Rhodes, if the miracle happens the child must be named Tsambika or Tsambikos depending on the gender. Indeed, these names are really common in the island.

The palace is an enormous construction with rooms, although only 24 rooms are open to the visitors. The most important rooms include the Waiting Room, the Reception Hall, the Ballroom and the Music Room that are decorated from impressive frescoes and mosaics of renowned artists. As the name indicates, the verdant valley has beautiful landscapes embellished with a charming river and waterfalls surrounded from sweet gum trees, oak, plane and pine trees. It is the sole natural forest of oriental sweet gum trees Liquidambar Orientalis in Europe and a resting point of the Jersey tiger butterflies Panaxia Quadripunctaria.

The area can be crossed through beautiful routes with picturesque bridges and cobblestone trails offering an experience of a lifetime. Follow the stone stairs that lead to the Monastery of Kalopetra to admire panoramic views of the valley. One of the most spectacular events of nature occurs in the valley of the butterflies, where huge numbers of butterflies congregate during the final stage of their life cycle.

Every late May, thousands of butterflies are attracted from the scent of the Oriental Sweet Gum trees and cover the entire landscape. Actually, they sleep well camouflaged in black and yellow colours. In the valley, there is a museum dedicated to the natural history of the island with extensive information of the flora and fauna of the reserve.
