Think about it. Treason draws its energy from the conscious, deliberate betrayal of a trust - as we were not trusted, we could not betray. And we did not wish to be traitors. We wished to be citizens. History, as 'Dark Days' is just as relevant today as it was then. History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read.
On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise, since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations. In great pain and terror one begins to assess the history which has placed one where one is, and formed one's point of view. In great pain and terror because, thereafter, one enters into battle with that historical creation, Oneself, and attempts to re-create oneself according to a principle more humane and more liberating: one begins the attempt to achieve a level of personal maturity and freedom which robs history of its tyrannical power, and also changes history.

His acute self-awareness is astounding — his sheer ability to connect his own specific life experiences and reflect on them in the wider context of a social issue or phenomenon is inspiring. I found his explanation of white supremacy particularly haunting, as he describes it as something that isn't actually white but a facade of whiteness that has become an invisible institute in America. Some of us hide behind our need to be accepted, to not divide? James Baldwin doesn't simply let you do that- even if you belong to the middle class or you're white or even if you're American. He speaks to something inside you. Your heritage. The knowledge that you -or your family- didn't wake up one day privileged. You had to struggle. But Some of us hide behind our need to be accepted, to not divide?

Can you be furious and thoughtful at the same time? Because James Baldwin in this book is. His prose, while angry in this text, is fucking beautiful and poignant. He writes with such piercing and compelling insight, I know his message will stay with me. Well, it should. The essays were written decades ago, but they feel incredibly relevant today, both with regards to the problems they talk about and the harshly divided world they present.

I really enjoyed Baldwin's novel, Giovanni's Room , and have been hoping to read more of his work ever since, so I was very much looking forward to this title. Whilst Baldwin's prose style is beautiful and intelligent, the content of these essays is sometimes quite difficult to read.
The titular essays begins with Baldwin's beliefs about racial ideas which prevailed during the Great Depression: 'To be black was to confront, and to be forced to alter, a condition forged in history. Indeed, without confronting the history that has either given white people an identity or divested them of it, it is hardly possible for anyone who thinks of himself as white to know what a black person is talking about at all.
They were the people who loved me, in their fashion - whom I loved, in mine.
These were people whom I had no choice but to imitate and, in time, to outwit. One realizes later that there is no one to outwit but oneself. He talks about race, the economy, migration, family, community, war, identity, politics, education, sexuality, and poverty, to name but a handful. He writes with piercing insight, and so much talent. Baldwin comments throughout on American society and culture. In 'The White Man's Guilt', he writes, for instance: 'This is the place in which, it seems to me, most white Americans find themselves.
They are dimly, or vividly, aware that the history they have fed themselves is mainly lie, but they do not know how to release themselves from it, and they suffer enormously from the resulting personal incoherence.

This incoherence is heard nowhere more plainly than in these stammering, terrified dialogues which white Americans sometime entertain with that black conscience, the black man in America. The essays here are important and insightful, and should be read by everyone. If we all took Baldwin's ideas and sentiments to heart, the world would be a much nicer place in which to live. Apr 16, Marie S. It's sad that it didn't really work for me, because I enjoy Baldwin's ideas. The first essay was good, the real problem for me was the second one. I didn't get what he was trying to say and it was long and dragging, and I felt that the subject was constantly changing without getting any point across.
