The author is simply following the writing traditions of many before her. I will say that I found this novel to be just as well written as many James Patterson novels and his ilk and I suspect as this series continues and it is indeed a series that she will get better and better at her craft. Now some may have a problem with the fact that this guy, Michael Sykora is a cold blooded killer who acts as judge, jury and executioner all on his own. Readers who are offended by such should probably seek out other stories to read because this work is a pure "revenge" sort of read and if you are not into that sort of thing then it could be uncomfortable.

Personally I like a good revenge read and have little problem with this sort of thing as long as I know it is a fictional tale. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Don Blankenship The Ozarks. Michael Sykora picks up where the law leaves off, delivering justice to those most deserving: He's trying to get over the murder of his fiance and finds himself entangled with another woman from his past. Therein lies the potential romance. This is exactly the kind of book I like to read. Plenty of action, just the right amount of emotion and just a hint of romance without going into detail.

Some people may categorize it as "vigilante justice. Michael doesn't revel in his newfound second career: The author handles that deftly, allowing Michael to question his actions but also allowing him to do what must be done. The writing is quick-paced, the word well-turned. The author's descriptive ability creates vivid imagery and the dialogue flows smoothly.

You can not only visualize the conversations between Michael and others, you can just about smell the bars they take place in. Darcia Helle is an underappreciated author in my opinion. She is one of those authors whose skills are equal to the levels of Dean Koontz, James Rollins and the like. If you don't check out "No Justice" you're doing yourself an injustice. Just go out and shoot him in the head.

Quite a few readers gave this story a good rating, whereas it troubled me throughout the entire reading. I always read a book in it's entirety, no matter how much or little I like it, but this story annoyed me from beginning to end. It is not believable to imagine that one person, a so-called professional killer, could kill with such ease, nonchalance and lack of conscience and not once get detected by anyone but the bad guys who obviously don't have a chance to survive. Then there's his ex-hooker girlfriend whom he's doing the "free" killings for and all she wants to do is aggravate him about sex and how bored she is.

The cops are stupid, the friends and family are entirely too naive; the characters just didn't seem to gel. Maybe I don't watch enough TV shows to know if this is the new norm. It just seemed forced together. Beauty and the Geek. Some Sort of Crazy. Books 1, 2, 2. The Ghost of Marlow House. A Qurilixen World Novella. The Road to Garrett. Apr 14, RJ rated it it was amazing. No Justice is an action-packed thriller with excellent pacing. Michael Sykora is a software engineer by day, and seeker of justice for hire by night. Helle does a great job of shading in the backstory between high tension scenes. But action is clearly the autor's area of expertise. The obstacles Sykora encounters are very realistic. The scenes are depicted with a light brush stroke, never detracting from the momentum of building tension.

Even though we've seen the protagonist in action several No Justice is an action-packed thriller with excellent pacing. Even though we've seen the protagonist in action several times before the climax, the story still reaches a full and satisfying crescendo as the level of intensity goes off the charts. The question of "What would you do to protect someone you love" is something my husband and I have discussed as a ethical issue. This book asks a different question "How far would you go to avenge a loved one? The book is well written and good thriller. It is one of my favorite genres and this book reminded me of how much I enjoy reading mysteries and thrillers.

I will definitely order the sequel to this book. Mar 02, Georgiann Hennelly rated it it was amazing. Michael is a software designer a smart likeable guy. To a chosen few he is a part time hitman. An assassin that only kills bad guys and a reformed prostitute — only in fiction. Yet, the author carried it off, getting me to like both of them.

All of her characters came alive and were believable. Dialogue was spot on. And, I did not see a single typo or grammatical error.

Short chapters so in theory one COULD set it down, but the story moves so swiftly one keeps thinking, "I need to see what happens in these next three pages, next four pages, next page I received this book as a gift and this voluntary review is my own opinion. A very good read! Just when you think good guys follow the rules along comes Michael! This is my first book from this author, and I will read more of her works.

Michael Grant: Gone (Gone Series Book 1)

Fast paced, with excellent characterizations, and believable scenarios. If you like goods guys that take the garbage out, you will enjoy this book. All in a day's work I really like the main character who is good and evil, treading lightly between the two with firm purpose. I also like being in his thought process as he navigates each day. A knight in shining armor. Michael is like Batman or Superman, a hidden identity. There was no sex but it was alluded to. I didn't care for the language but I would read another. It kept you on the edge of your seat.

This was an interesting, fully fleshed out character but not all were. It was a good story line with suspenseful moments. I danced around the room after I finished it because I was so glad it was over. I feel like the author was paid by the word and this book is drowning in superfluous words and numbing tedium. I finished the book because that's the deal when you get a free book. You must review it This was an interesting, fully fleshed out character but not all were.

You must review it. Mar 15, Jim DeLorey rated it it was amazing. A top-notch modern vigilante thriller 'Let him laugh. One more hour and he'd be dead. Almost before I knew it, I was deep in the world of Michael Sykora - software designer by day and a killer for hire at night. Only Michael doesn't kill just anyone.

If the person seeking vengeance can afford it, he takes pay for his work. If they can't, he does his work 'pro bono.

Helle's book is well-paced, speeding up as it approaches its violent bits and then slowing down to develop the multi-layered character of Michael and the people in his world. We meet Ruby, his congenial secretary; her son Isaac, a cop and friend to Michael who's unaware of his homicidal sideline; and Sean, a fellow assassin. We also see Michael slowly reconnecting with his long-estranged alcoholic father, who's gotten sober, but is now dying of cancer. As we restlessly turn the pages, we also learn of the defining event of his life: A shattering event that has clearly left him emotionally wounded, even as it has set him on the cold-blooded path he now follows - that of the feared professional killer known as the Ghost.

Then a woman from Michael's past appears. Nicki, a prostitute with whom he took physical solace after losing Christina, comes to him for help. She's in mortal danger from Antonio Lott, a murderous gang-banger who believes that Nicki has information that could bring him and his cohorts down.

But instead of being a relatively easy, solitary kill like most of his victims, Lott keeps himself surrounded by thugs, which makes Michael's job far more difficult than usual. Soon Nicki is staying at Michael's place and the sexual and romantic tension between them becomes ever more palpable.

No Justice

Finally the book comes to a satisfyingly violent conclusion. But it also leaves some tantalizing threads open. It had me turning the pages non-stop to see what would go down next, and left me itching to get to the next installment in the author's Michael Sykora series. To Nikki, he is a former lover and a great lay at that , a lost friend - and the only man she trusts when her life is threatened. To Sean, he is a man of conscious, a man with a well-earned reputation - and the only man who once hired him to do a job, then finished it himself. To Renwick, Nelson, Lott, and all the other scum of the world, he is a hunter.

Michael Sykora is all of these things. He's the "abandoned son of a mother who couldn't love him enough, the son of a drunk, the fiance of a murdered woman, First, the action is fast-paced and non-stop, start to finish I think the short chapters had a lot to do with this. Second, the story had multiple POVs - which is something I enjoy and feel gives it a little more depth instead of leaving it on a singular plane.

Third, the dialogue although cheesy at some points was cleverly written, believable i. Fourth, the former-love-story-slash-current-sexual-tension between Michael and Nikki is palpable. And while there are times when I thought, "There's no way one guy is capable of all of this!

No Justice was a light read, almost like a short story series, but with a little more meat - meaning there is a little backstory for the characters, but it isn't a heaping mound you have to wade through.

If you're looking for a fast summer read, check out the Sykora novels by Darcia Helle! Sep 07, Gail Baugniet rated it it was amazing. The story is filled with well-paced action; a hint of a promise of a budding romance; and lots of poetic, if not vigilante, justice meted out. In order to gain sympathy from the reader for the protagonist, who is a killer remember, it is necessary for the bad guys to be really, really bad, meaning they have little or no redeeming qualities.

Sure, they may love their mothers and eat all their broccoli, but that is for their own benefit, never for the good of someone else. He kills to avenge the violence perpetrated against his woman, then against all women. The story is solid, the plot holds up and the action never lets up. Aug 24, Barbara rated it it was amazing.

The first paragraph hooked me. Michael, a software programmer, has added a side job to his life, he is also an expensive, compassionate, yet careful hired hit man - his targets, the low life scum of the world. Michael hired Sean to do the job, BUT realized he want to kill him himself. Honestly who wouldn't want to! Michael realizes he's good at it, and soon becomes known as the ghost. The only one who knows about him is The first paragraph hooked me.

The only one who knows about him is Sean, that is until Nicki resurfaces from his past. She was his release after Christina's murder, they became friends. Nicki is in trouble, she is beat up by a clients drug selling, porn distributing, women beating boyfriend, Lott, or at least she thinks it is Lott. Michael agrees to help her take care of the problem, and this is where you start to root for Nicki.
