The New York Times wrote the following in a feature on Falconer:.

The results are both stark and embraceable. Falconer also sparingly incorporates photographic images into his illustrations — artwork by Degas and Pollock, a poster of Eleanor Roosevelt, a photograph of the Egyptian Sphinx, etc. Colors other than red have always been used sparsely and always with intention: Mine are clean and spare, so maybe they stick out. Olivia Goes to Venice by Ian Falconer

Olivia is just basically me in the book enjoying Venice for the first time. Falconer has accurately captured the overwhelming color qualities of Venice but, in the process, has overwhelmed the reader who has come to appreciate Olivia in her simple palette of black, white and red. And, as usual, we delight in observing the mischief Olivia inevitably finds: I vow to seldom, if ever again, spend time on this blog panning a book.

The photo was preserved on a […]. Especially considering that everything else that had […]. I applaud Falconer for stretching out. This is a change, for sure, but not for the worse.

I thought the Lost Toy was a bad sign — clever, but episodic and rambling. You are commenting using your WordPress.

She's drawn from the classic Brother's Grimm fairytale rather than the modern, Disney re-imagining , which satisfies Eloise's appetite for princess stories while still giving us a story with substance. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.
