The plot - for me anyway - was unusual, in a good way. I have read several shifter stories, but I haven't run across any where the females are in charge and the males are basically used as studs. To boil down the plot, Harrison is a male shifter whose mother is the Queen she is crazy, FYI in their group. Because I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Because males are so "rare" they don't know why they are basically used as studs to impregnate the females - even if they are blood related.

Harrison rebelled against mating with his half-sister, he kills her, and is forced to remain in his wolf form because his mother demands it. He is then sold into slavery in another realm, there are several other wolves there. Eventually Harrison is able to escape and long story short, he becomes the leader of this rag-tag gay shifter wolf group.

Because Harrison had been forced to remain in his wolf form, while he can think like a human, he cannot communicate, and while he is a slave in this other realm with these other wolves, the most they can do is paw their names in the dirt. Harrison had no idea until later that the reason they had all been enslaved and exiled is because they were all gay. Harrison is shocked to learn this and looks at his group with new eyes.

Once they were all able to escape and were relatively safe, they managed to free themselves from the collars that kept them in wolf form, and were able to speak to each other. Before Harrison escaped, Koz was actually the freedom instigator. He rebelled against their master and killed him, and was able to start releasing the wolves from their cages. The other wolves then freed more from their cages. When it looks like a human is coming and their could be trouble, they run out, but Harrison's cage neighbor Nathaniel doesn't free him before running off and Harrison and another wolf are still locked away.

Harrison does manage to force his way out of his cage and frees the other wolf, forcing him to run off, dragging him at times. Harrison and the other wolf Garrett? They are once again locked in cages. Harrison and G manage to free them, and because of this, Harrison is now considered their leader by some Wolf Law. Koz is a little put out, but in a coy way, that Harrison freed him instead of the other way around.

Koz had been drawn to Harrison since he first saw him, and didn't realize Harrison wasn't freed like the rest of the group until it was too late. Harrison - once he realizes the group is made of gay exiled wolves - feels it's best that he not choose any mate just for sex, because he doesn't want hurt feelings. He also doesn't want some wolf sense of worship to be the reason the man submits to him.

Harrison wants love and free will. I get that, but seriously? I had a little trouble with this kind of thinking. The wolves during the full moon experience a blood lust and will mate with anyone - they can't help it. It's understood in the wolf world that instinct takes over and it has nothing to do with feelings.

How does Harrison think he will manage to restrain himself from just going after any wolf who submits? Well, fortunately they still have those collars that forced them to remain in wolf form. In their human form, it drains them, and Harrison thinks this will stop him from becoming sex crazed. I get it - he's the reluctant leader and he doesn't want their to be any hurt feelings in the group which could cause chaos and anarchy, or something.

But holding himself apart from the group can have a negative impact as well. Which it does, eventually. Koz has also put on a collar and meets up with Harrison. They talk, Koz basically seduces Harrison and they have sex as humans. This results in Nathanial becoming jealous and runs off, to be found later to have bitten a human male and turned him. Harrison cannot believe Nate did this to an innocent human, and forces them to be a mated pair. The rest of the group agrees. Nate and his mate appear to be the plot for the 2nd book; looks good.

They realize they cannot stay where they have been and must move on. They have a plan to buy a boat and become pirates. I think I raised a few eyebrows at this point. I've never heard of a werewolf pirate, but I guess there is a first time for everything. It's an interesting twist, but at the same time, I shook my head.

It's laughable to me; I just went with it. I did enjoy how they went about eventually getting a boat. When Harrison freed the pack that 2nd time, it was from a man who wanted to skin them and sell their pelts. Their first master who Koz killed simply used them to sniff out truffles. This 2nd guys skinned wolves alive and also sold their meat to people who believed they would gain magic powers.

So Koz knew this guy had a boat, and when they get to the docks, they see it, see that man, and develop a plan to steal the ship and Harrison thinks it will be just punishment to turn the man into a werewolf. Harrison was born a shifter, but when a born shifter bites a human, they become a secondary wolf, and can only shift during the full moon.

Harrison bites the wolf butcher and tosses him overboard, and off they go with the ship. I thought that was a great ending, and funny too.

I really enjoyed this story, and the relationship between Harrison and Koz did have some questionable moments, and at times I felt like I couldn't really trust Koz something was off , but I thought they made a good couple. This is clearly just the first in a series, and we will see more of Harrison and Koz in the future. I gave it 4 stars, but it was more like 3.

I really wish there were more than 5 stars because the rating isn't always so cut and dry. I hope the rest of the books in the series live up to the potential they all have based on this book. Great start to a new series! Rather than mate his half sister as she intended, he chose to end her life and save them both from the shame of the act. As punishment for his disobedience, she had him cast out of her kingdom while trapping his human mind inside the body of the beast. Sold to a human trader to be worked to the death, his only chanc 3 stars I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sold to a human trader to be worked to the death, his only chance at survival appeared in the form of a newly acquired wolf that refused to bend to the will of their new captor. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of the adventure in every sense of the word. While I enjoyed the fantasy aspect of it, a bunch of questions were simply passed over. Mostly due to the fact that Harrison himself seems to have no idea how his world and the world of humans are connected and function.

Even more unfortunate, is the fact that none of the other wolves he meets seem to know or feel inclined to share those details. While I loved the first part of the book, it started to fall apart for me as the focus began to shift from world building to the characters themselves. We meet a wild array of characters, but have only been properly introduced to four or so.

No real interactions, no conversations, not even character descriptions were given for maybe half the pack Harrison wound up in charge of. Frankly, I can't even figure out how many of them there actually are. And I honestly don't care enough to comb through the book to find out. When Harrison was in his element, he was a strong character and carried a compelling narrative. The way he stood up to his mother in the face of everything he had to love was utterly amazing. But that narrative along with his sureness of action completely fell apart as soon as Koz was added to the equation.

His morality is clearly skewed and something of his own. To hear someone like that preach against immorality, of exploiting humans, of not seeking retribution is just… wrong. Okay, that's not entirely fair. In which case, why… hide spoiler ] Anyways.

First Moon

The writing, for the most is good, but some sentence structures are downright odd. More character development is definitely going to be needed if the story's going to stay as character centric as the second half of this book was. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book starts with Harrison's own mother ordering him to mate with his own half-sister since they are both Primary. Harrison doesn't want anything to do with it and has only thoughts for someone named Jacques who allowed his with to mate with him twice, something that perplexes Harrison. He also lets readers know that it doesn't really matter since Jacques maybe dead or if not dead in a place he won't ever be able to get to again.

In a ploy I received this book in exchange for an honest review. In a ploy to get him to what she his mother wants she has him imprisoned for three days until the full moon because she plans to lock his half-sister up with him when the full moon comes and he is taken by lunacy.

Forcing him to mate whoever is there. Two nights before the full moon his half sister visits him and drops a huge bomb that sickens and shocks Harrison. Harrison only thought are of escape and Jacques. When his mother's plan fails she exiles him. Harrison is forced into servitude but when an opportunity presents itself Harrison takes it and manages to free the other still imprisoned.

I'm was s bit disgusted by Fimkook and his plan to cannibalize the wolves he captured and sell their fur, skinning them alive. It's horrible to think about. I liked Harrison's sense of morality and the need to be kind. His thoughtfulness and unwillingness to lead but still doing it.

Kor was a nice twist in the story and I liked that he was so persistent in his intentions toward Harrison. The rag tag group of shifters, Garrick esp. The band of shifters were different from other stories in that only primary's could change humans at will, secondaries had to wait to the full moon to change someone.

This book was so good. I loved Harrison and Koz.

While the book has you in its grip from the start, the story really picks up pace a little later. I feel that there are many more secrets that this new world has yet to reveal. The This book was provided for free by the author in exchange for an honest review. The author paints a really vivid picture of the events, situations and dynamics that govern the narrative of this book. Overall this world feels like ancient times with werekin dynasties and human worlds.

It was quite unique but I believe that this world needs to be lived in more before we can truly grasp its extent. What I loved about this book were the characters, especially Harrison. His noble behaviour and deep sense of morality really have you on his side from the very beginning. Also he is one person who shows his intent by his actions which is remarkable to say the least. I loved that Lucian found his missing link, his peace, his home within the beautifully broken but spunky Catty.

I've been a fan of this series for years and I get so excited when I am able to see what all my favorite Weres have been up to!! I've seriously missed those hunky and adorable misfits! Oct 13, Tara Dorough rated it it was amazing. Lucian is a sexy, honorable, dedicated wolf. Catty is a tough as nails she wolf. Their story is full of heart, grit, terror, love and dedication. Jun 24, Tammy Ambrose rated it it was ok. I have enjoyed this series, but with one book to go I have to say I feel like the author is running out of steam. Lucian and Catty were my least favorite characters so far. I just did not feel a connection between them and I didn't understand the whole Catty left her loving, well to do family to strip so she could be noticed thing and I feel the author missed an opportunity to explain why she felt this way.

Lucian came across as distant and even though he enjoyed sex with Catty I didn't feel much I have enjoyed this series, but with one book to go I have to say I feel like the author is running out of steam. Lucian came across as distant and even though he enjoyed sex with Catty I didn't feel much of a connection other wise. One of the things I have loved about this series is Ms. Vaughn's humor and both Lucian and Catty were lacking in both.

There were also several errors in the book and it could have used a good editing. I know these things happen and for the most part they don't bother me, but this seemed excessive. Jun 15, Lisa Ward rated it it was amazing. Full of Excitement, Suspense, Action and sexy hot romance.

This is her 5th book in the series. She has a wonderful way of writing that reaches in, grabs you and won't let go until you are hooked. The delightful humor that can be found in the best of times and the worse of times in her books.

The heartfelt emotion of brotherhood, family, self sacrifice and love. The way she brings back the characters from earlier in the series brings the feeling of familiarity while on a breakneck adventure to right the wrongs that have been done. The masculine strength of the men with the show of womanly power that leaves me feeling I could take on the world. Aug 18, Tanya Brown rated it it was amazing. I have been very fortunate so far this year in my reading. I have only read one horrible book! Indeed, almost all of them have been wonderful and I'm on a reading high that this book kept waaay up at an all time level. The world building was great. It had a few new twists to add to the lycan mythos that I thoroughly enjoyed. She is just so sassy, doesn't take any guff from either the hero or villein and she just keeps going no matter how horrible things get. Not in a floaty unrealistic way either, just gritty dogged determination.

I want to be her when I grow up. I usually wait until at least 3 or more books in a series have been written before I start the series. I'm not sure how I'm going to wait until the next story gets published because all day I've been thinking of all the possibilities for the next books. I finished the book in the wee hours this morning and wanted to let it percolate for the day so it wouldn't be too 'fangirl' and gushy but I keep thinking about it. I don't do 'wait' well. To finish this review up, I highly recommend this book and the author.

Aubrey has curves and she's OKAY with them and that make her awsome, but she also has her values and no matter what she won't let anyone undermine even a sexy werewolf and that makes her a great heroine. Tao is an alpha male, a deliciousily sexy one at that and while he does things his way he's not afraid to accept guidance from Aubrey when he can see the wisdom of what she says. I loved seeing these two work together and watch their story grow, and more than that the werewolf aspect was done beautifuilly.

The author writes a story that is quite descriptive without being overly done. Just the right balance that paints a vivid picture without slowing down the pace of the story, which was pretty much straight forward.
