Defying Darwin

These are just technical issues, but issues none the less. The improper formatting of the book probably relates to the second issue; the desperate need for an editor. We could all use a good editor, even me with this rambling review, but it really shows in Defying Darwin because of its length. As I said, I am a real fan of this book, but I still found myself skipping pages that just said the same thing over, and even where brilliance was shining through, it was often difficult to follow the train of logic.

It seems like it was probably self-published, so maybe a second edition will get the attention it deserves. Now to the actual book. The author makes it clear that her original motivation for exploring a field outside her own was the obvious racism and misogyny of the theory of evolution. A treatment long overdue. The real target of the book, however, is the theory itself. I read Origin of Species just recently, and Darwin is a beautiful writer, and the conclusion he drew from his observation where quite reasonable for his time, as the author points out.

It seems to me that the there are two pillars that hold up the theory of evolution. The first is its obviousness. The present generation of individuals is always going to be populated by the progeny of the most successful breeders of the last generation. You can't argue with that!

The real support for the theory, I'm afraid, is the lack of an alternative. This is what this book brings to the table; an alternative. How refreshing it is to read someone with an open mind who fearlessly looks at reality. The author provides a fresh and almost philosophical way of viewing life itself.

This alone justifies the effort, but she also makes specific statements about reality that can be tested, while making the case that the orthodox lock on information in the fields of Anthropology and Genetics makes it almost impossible to do. In time, the truth always wins out, but in the mean time, it is books like this that crack the edifice of received knowledge and open the way for a little light to shine through the darkness.
