What he did with his big hole was a big surprise to his neighbors and everyone who heard the story. Wayne began his special DIY adventure by digging a mysterious giant hole in his backyard. Wayne bought a foot shipping container and had actually owned the giant space before he put a shovel in the ground. The first thing Wayne did to his shipping container was to make sure it was sealed shut.

Riddle Archives

Every inch of the shipping container was investigated to make sure there were no cracks, and if there were any, they were sealed. The double doors that are common with shipping containers were sealed shut, and Wayne installed a swinging door at the other end.

All potential leaks were sealed up, and the new door was deliberately chosen to make sure it opened inward into the container. For what Wayne had planned, he needed to make sure it was measured out correctly. His plan was to throw the shipping container inside so he had to make sure the hole was deeper enough. In fact, Wayne made the hole two foot deeper than the container to give himself room to play with when it came to his project.

There were also two feet extra on all sides of where the container would sit. Wayne also made sure to remember to leave enough room at one end of his hole to allow him entrance and exit of the container. If he had just thrown in the container without preparing the hole, then it might sink into the earth. That meant Wayne needed to line the bottom of the hole with gravel, which also allowed any water that dripped from above to filter through below.

This was a big project for Wayne, and he was taking every step of the way very seriously. He could be spending a lot of time in this hole. Wayne might have bought a shipping container all by himself, but he was going to need some help getting it into place. To lower the shipping container into the hole, Wayne called upon the help of a septic tank installation company for the use of their crane. There was still more to do though. One of the reasons why Wayne dug his hole two foot wider on all sides than it seemingly needed to be, was to ensure that the shipping container would fit.

Things were about to develop quickly for Wayne. There were a few more things to consider before getting stuck into the container, and Wayne had to install a pump that drains water out of small spaces. If this underground bunker was going to be a safe place for Wayne to hang out, he was going to have to make it as secure as possible. That meant adding supportive beams to the top of the container so it could withstand some weight being placed on the top.

These beams were also being used to help lock the container into place in the event that the ground underneath it shifts in some way. Wayne knew that if his underground shipping container was going to survive, he needed to protect it from all of the elements. Wayne was going to be able to use the ground as a support for some of the beams laid across his container.

To make it as strong as possible, Wayne laid over a metal sheet that was more than capable of withstanding the weight of a person. The outside of this underground bunker was beginning to come together. How clever! The shelter was in surprisingly good condition and it seemed like a shame to let such ingenuity go to waste. There were a few goodies left behind, too. Jon found several cans of emergency drinking water that were still full.

Jon also found four large drums of wafers. Just like the water, the wafers were in no way edible, but they too proved someone was prepared to hide out for quite some time. Jon decided it was time to start tidying up the place.

It took quite the effort to clean up all the debris. Jon and his friends brought down large plastic bins to fill with the dirt and pieces of broken cement, and they carried them up the stairs one by one. Finally, after several hours of hard labor, the shelter was taking on a completely different look.

The stairs posed a real hazard if anyone tripped on them; nails and jagged edges of metal were exposed everywhere.

The rusted stairs were pried off the center support beam and Jon and his friends replaced the center beam and started installing sturdy, freshly painted stairs in a spiral fashion. This made entering and exiting the shelter much safer. As of now, it was just a massive dirt pit that lead into a cement tube.

The group was going to construct a much more appealing doorway! They braced the lid with planks of wood so their measurements would be exact, and they filled in any extra space with wet concrete. Just look at the end product!

A Painstaking Search

Now, it was time for Jon to decide what exactly to do with it. As the couple excitedly settled into their new space, they were alarmed to find this hiding in the yard. Intrigued, they just knew they had to explore it further! And boy, was there a lot! Basically, it held anything that a family would need in the event of a nuclear attack. The search led them to a woman named Debrah Kaufman…. Debrah explained to them that it was her father, Alvin Kaufman, who had built the shelter way back in Alvin had been a self-taught nuclear engineer and he was very much aware of the effects a nuclear attack would have.

The prospect had frightened him so much, in fact, that he once offered to build a giant shelter for the entire neighborhood! It had a water tank, a hand-cranked air filter, several sleeping areas for his family, and enough food to last them for several weeks. He truly thought of everything. Heck, even paper towels and plastic bags made the cut!
