Book information

Themain character is a woman suffering from postpartum depression, herhusband is a doctor and due to the beliefs of the time makes allthe wrong decisions in concern to her health. He may very well haveloved her but oppressed her to the point of insanity. Her ownopinions and desires were of no importance, as per usual for thisera.

I can see how every one is interpreting this as a feministstory, however, I read it more from a psychological stand point. Idon't blame the brother or the husband, I'm sure they genuinelythought they were administering the best form of medical help.

Such a creepy, sadstoryBy MaryThe Yellow Wallpaper is the short story of a woman'sdescent into madness. What probably started as a post-partumdepression slides into a full-on psychosis by the end. The story istold by the narrator by means of a secret journal, of sorts. We aremade privy to her thoughts, which come to fixate on the yellowwallpaper in the bedroom of the house her physician husband hasrented for them in an attempt to to get her away from it all so shecan "rest" and get better.

But instead of getting better, thenarrator falls more deeply into her illness.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Gilman, Charlotte Perkins

What makesit so sad is how believable the story is. The creepy factor comesfrom the horror the narrator's mind invents. In small, nearlyimperceptible steps, the reader slides into the crazy along withthe narrator. I am intrigued and will seek out more works by thisauthor. Why buy our paperbacks? Most of them use low-quality papersbinding. Their pages fall off easily.

Some of them even use verysmall font size of 6 or less to increase their profit margin. Itmakes their books completely unreadable. It is regarded as animportant early work of American feminist literature, illustratingattitudes in the 19th century toward women's health, both physicaland mental. Presented in the first person, the story is acollection of journal entries written by a woman whose physicianhusband John has rented an old mansion for the summer.

Foregoingother rooms in the house, the couple moves into the upstairsnursery.

As a form of treatment she is forbidden from working, andis encouraged to eat well and get plenty of exercise and air, soshe can recuperate from what he calls a "temporary nervousdepression ndash; a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis commonto women in that period. She hides her journal from her husband andhis sister the housekeeper, fearful of being reproached foroverworking herself.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - Summary & Analysis

As mentioned before, I had tried doing some thumbnails of the story and struggled. I was doing a lot of experimentation with this before creating a 3d room with a single cutout barred window. I cut a character from previous expressive wallpaper illustrations and made a silhouette.

Description

I really liked this idea of the light as time passing so from here decided I would do something I would never usually do and work with 3d. Shortly after this we had a workshop with the task of creating double page spreads. I really liked how this had turned out and it gave me the idea of focusing on different areas of the room at different angles in my final imagery.

Soon after this I went though looking at key objects and main characters to make from cardboard. I took a photo of the chair in the empty room to play around with light and discovered that actually, this on its own was a great depiction of loneliness and isolation!

From here I took a simple and far less literal approach as this was so much more effective! Maybe the one thing I would change about them would be the quality of the images: the focus and making sure I took them at a high dpi.

This is an example of how trying things I would never have tried before this term photography, film have made me learn different skills which will be really useful in the future. As for the image focus, I think it works well in a way being slightly out of focus as it fits the mood of the book better and perhaps if I shot at a higher dpi with more focus it may have been too detailed for the confusing and spooky mood of the story. I tried to really edit and refine my final images when laying out prints for a book and am happy with the final outcomes.
