Give a yearlong gift of meaning,

John Rentoul. Matthew Norman. By Laura Donnelly , Health Editor. A study of more than families asked children, adolescents and their parents to rate their happiness levels. It found that adults routinely over-estimated the contentment of the younger children, aged 10 and 11 — while assessing teenagers as far more miserable than they really were. Researchers from Plymouth University said the discrepancies seemed to stem from a tendency of parents to give children scores which in fact reflected their own feelings.

They said an "egocentric bias" meant parents relied too heavily on their own emotions in assessing the happiness of the family unit. As a result, adults who felt run ragged by moody teens might assume their children were unhappy, when in fact they were plain grumpy, the study suggests. Researchers said the study, published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, could provide valuable information that could improve parent-child relationships. The study questioned a total of children and adolescents from two different schools in Spain, along with their parents, and their happiness was assessed using a range of self-reporting measures and ratings.

The results showed that parents were inclined to score a child or adolescents' happiness closely in line with their own emotional feelings, whereas in fact there were notable differences. It can also be a frustrating, painful and frightening challenge for parents as well, as we can struggle to understand what is teenage angst, and what is something more serious.
