That is bad for a number of reasons, including the fact that local media are often trusted to a greater degree than the major national news outlets. Philanthropic individuals and foundations should support local journalism, as well as initiatives devoted to countering falsehoods propagated by foreign actors.
Government should help raise awareness about the threat of foreign interference, as exposure is one of the most effective means to building resilience and combating foreign interference operations. However, it should also seek partners in civil society who can combat foreign disinformation and effectively message to American and foreign audiences, and who are devoted to strengthening democratic values worldwide.

Our society is fueled by literacy, and if we do not stand up for these struggling learners now, the consequences for both the individuals and society as a whole will be disastrous.
Although literacy rates are a nationwide issue, the solution lies surprisingly close to home: Grassroots teams across the country have already begun the movement to reform education, and their successes have been monumental. All that remains is for the message to spread, the spark to ignite. You can be the next leader of change, voicing a clear and compelling call to action.
