This people that have been born in spain, are esentiall to complete this article. There certainly are many people immigrants who have set their roots here in Spain and the children they have that are born here probably have a very interesting story to tell. My story is different because I am foreign, but those children that are born and raised here are just as Spanish as any other Spaniard so it must be tough to deal with the kind of situations like what I dealt with. Hopefully one day I will so I can get a more complete perspective on this topic.

Born and raised in Madrid myself but half Eq. Guinean half Belgian, I remember so well my surprise the first time I went to Paris, I was 15, there were so many black people!! Compared to in Spain… Lovely post Jessica! Between Portugal and France, Spain is surrounded by countries with much more diversity than it has. I think that has more to do with the French and Portuguese strong influences in Africa more than anything else, but it is still very interesting to see.

I had a similar reaction when I went to Paris! I am glad I found your blog.

I enjoyed reading this post very much, to be honest. Being a black guy that grew up and lives in Spain, I can totally relate to this. Of course this does not mean the country is awful, but it still needs to improve in many aspects, as you withnessed regarding these parents-teachers relationship. And they thought I was American, and were surprised I could speak the language and new about the History.

There is still the tendency to locate black people ,there are many Guinean professionals here though, outside the country. We are certainly in transition.

So historically they have always been surrounded by different races, as Latin American people can prove. Now that the situation has changed, some people have hard times changing or adapting their vocabulary. This PC does not always apply to every daily setting. Black people are also perceived as oversexualized and potent and exotic sexual partners, especially referring to black Cubans and Brazilian mulatos.

But things could always be worse. People are friendly, socially reachable and there is security.

Good luck with your stay in here. Thank you so much for reaching out and commenting! It is nice to hear from someone who has a different but still relatable perspective on this topic. I also find it interesting that some of the stereotypes you mentioned about blacks being seen as over-sexualized etc. Where in the U. Depending on where you go they may or may not be surprised that their Spanish professor is black. People in places like Florida, for example, where there are many Cubans would not be surprised. This is a wonderful piece.

We need someone like you. I am British black of African descent hoping to move to Almeria for warmer weather. What am I likely to experience? Your insight will be invaluable. I will be doing personal writing there and will be coming back to Britain from time to time. I never actually experience living in America, only go to Florida with family for holidays. And as for black people here; the fact that Africans have a sizeable percentage, to my mind, made all the difference perhaps.
