They let a stark raving Nicolas Cage loose on the streets of Manhattan. New Yorkers were so jaded to crazies in the late 80s that no one even acknowledged him. It is a masterpiece. Which week old bread is the least hard? Which Kardashian is the most inane? If Daniel Day-Lewis had been in this film he would have not only eaten a cockroach, he would have drunk human blood.

Makes sense about wanting to be like his friend Tom Waits with the pencil-thin, as Tom Waits also let real bugs crawl around in his mouth in Dracula. That explains a hell of a lot, on both sides. There is a close-up of Peter eating a cockroach. To make matters more disturbing, Nicolas Cage actually ate a real cockroach. It took three takes before the scene was finished. Apparently, that part wasn't actually scripted, and the roach's owner got very angry at Cage for eating it, considering the time and money it took to train. According to the Director , the version used in the film is actually the first take, and he was happy with it when he shot it.

He was just pissed at Cage about something, so he made him eat two more cockroaches. To the point where sunlight or anything cross-shaped causes Peter to scream in pain. Nicolas Cage does a rather impressive physical impression of Count Orlok in one of the later scenes in the movie, before assaulting a young woman at a nightclub. Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: This is sort of an overall theme with this movie, since it's never explicitly stated whether or not Peter is really a vampire although there are several clues that he probably isn't. A bit more ambiguously whether or not Rachel is a vampire. That she is, but Peter is merely a Vampire Vannabe , is a possible interpretation. When Rachel bit Peter, it apparently drove him insane.

Cage says he used to rehearse in his hotel room which prompts Bierman to ask if he remembers the incident with the cat. It seems Cage had his cat Louis staying with him during production, and it tore up the hotel room at the Mayflower.

The pair talk about watching daily rushes, and Bierman comments that in the UK actors never watch them. Both men think Beals makes for a fantastic vampire.

Originally Loew was going to eat raw eggs, but Cage suggested he eat a cockroach instead because he wanted to shock the audience. In retrospect he believes Cage was right that this was a smart take on the character. Bierman shot additional takes just in case, but they stuck with it. Cage was frustrated with the prop gun during the basement assault scene, but Bierman had to remind him that a gun with blanks could still actually kill him.

He caught a lot of criticism from people saying it was over the top, but Cage gives that no weight. Per Bierman, Cage arrived on the first day of shooting with a pencil mustache.
