This is the first Dornford Yates book I've read and I enjoyed it on the whole.

It's rather like The Famous Five for grown-ups, with hidden treasure, a faithful dog, an old castle complete with oubliette, well and tunnels, despicable villains and plenty of adventure. However, I agree with another reviewer that there was far too much description of the layout of the castle and its surrounds and the logistics of retrieving the treasure.

A simple plan would have sufficed which would have allowed the reader to see at a glance - ah, that's where they have to hit the shaft - and get on with reading what is otherwise a gripping and exciting tale. I read "The Riddle of the Sands" a couple of years ago and found the maps and plans in this book invaluable. One question, though, that confused me - the narrator is referred to as Richard Chandos on the back cover, and in other descriptions I've read of Yates' work, yet in this version of the book, he seems to be William.

Can anyone throw light on this mystery? Despite the lack of visual aids, this book is a cracking good read for the most part and in the end, the idea of motoring across Europe in a Rolls in search of hidden treasure is so appealing that I expect I'll try some more books by Dornford Yates. He is rather a cypher, around whom dance all the more colourful characters, and to whom so many exciting adventures occur - and they can really only be called 'adventures'. The goodies are good, the baddies are bad, and everyone knows where he stands.

The word of an Englishman is sacrosanct, and that of a foreigner any foreigner! This is a novel that, if read in the spirit in which it was written, will grip its audience from first to last. There is also now the added value of much ironic fun to be made at the expense of the jolly old good old days, though to my mind this would be a rather lazy attitude to a tale and a cast of characters that are simply of their time.

Let's put our PC platitudes to bed for an hour or two, and enjoy the fun! I suspect my grand father or even great grandfather might have enjoyed this silly story and its probably better than watching and certainly better than listening to BBC and Radio 4 , but only just! We much enjoy all the Chandos stories - they are very 'dated' but it was nice to read this one again. A little dated and rather quaint in language.

A rip roaring boys' tale of derring do, tightly plotted and exciting in its way, even as there was no doubt as to the eventual outcome. I highly recommend to that tiny market of surviving Boys' Own Paper addicts. A great DY novel, the first appearance of J. If you enjoy the craft of story telling this is a must read! The plot is well-crafted. The characters are sketched with the kind of detail that makes you see them.

There is suspense and humour and drama. I really enjoyed this book Well written in that masterly way. I'm becoming rather hooked on Dornford Yates! This is the only book of Yates' that I've read, and honestly I was less than impressed. Yates is normally classed with John Buchan and "Sapper" sometimes called the "Clubland" writers, a formulation that for an American, at least, is less than useful, as few really understand what a British "Club" is or was , but he lacks Buchan's literary ambition and Sapper's modern snap.

Average upper-class British chap by sheer happenstance is witness to a murder, soon joins forces with his friends and a wise, older leader to get a buried treasure out of a not-very-well presented Austrian or German, I don't remember exactly, truth to tell village. Their opposition is a rather dull group of thugs -- indeed one of the problems with this book is that the bad guys are so faceless, in a book like this you want them to be truly larger than life, this is supposed to be a hearkening back to Romance, right?

But worse, Yates made the very odd decision here to make the motive force behind the plot -- the true hero -- the Wiser Older Fellow, not the viewpoint character. This necessarily has the effect of distancing yourself from all the action, since its not so much a process of "you identifying with the hero" as it is "you identyifying with a guy who's impressed with the hero".
