The Nebraska farm boy remains and enters medical school in Berlin. A few years later, John is drafted into the German army after refusing to join the Nazi party and spy on America. John is befriended by an officer who gets assigned to the famed Afrika Korps.
John becomes a valet to Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. As luck would have it, John is sent to a camp in Clarinda, Iowa, some miles from his family's Nebraska farm. He escapes, and when John finally returns home, there is a surprise waiting for him. John's odyssey is only beginning.
I found the novel engrossing, and was fascinated by the level of little-known World War II history provided. A very interesting well written story. The subject is an eye opener and will keep you enthralled as well as acquaint with history that was a story in itself.
