She couldn't have weighed more than 90lb and moved around with great energy. Kirkland was sent out with a group of models. He took the girls, who treated him like a younger brother, to the Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries and the Louvre and snapped a series of beautifully offbeat, reportage—style pictures. For the woman who once said, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening," he couldn't have done better.

When he brought her his pictures, she sifted through, and said "on peut continuer" — we can continue. Kirkland had passed the test. Over the next three weeks, he spent every day with Mademoiselle, and some evenings too.

And though the House of Chanel still goes on today, I still see her reflection in the modernized versions of her work and still wish I had buckets of money to buy it. What I would give to have a signature quilted Chanel purse, with her timeless suits, and two toned kitten heels. The photography in th Coco Chanel is, without a doubt, on of my favorite fashion designers.
