Oh no, there's been an error

Rank is the very epitome of an unreliable narrator. His opinion of himself is too clever by half as he describes, occasionally in tedious detail, his circumstances and the way he is able to one-up each of the Gascoynes or cuckold his lifelong rival, Lionel Holland. Rank comes across as a sociopath who is aware of the concerns of the people around him, but is completely at ease taking advantage of their feelings while dismissing them entirely if it serves his purpose.

Perhaps the worst victim of this is his cousin, Edith Gascoyne, who he wooed and used. It was not a quiet affirmation of mid-century communitarian values.

It did not feature the reassuring presence of Stanley Holloway or Margaret Rutherford. It was a Wildean farce about an adulterous serial killer, adapted from a gleefully nasty Edwardian novel by a director who sometimes drank so much he hallucinated being followed home by malicious lobsters. I t starred Dennis Price as Louis Mazzini, the child of an aristocrat excommunicated from her family after eloping with an Italian opera singer. Familiarity has blunted our sensitivity to its violence. The setting is appropriate.

T he murderer in the book is not so well-mannered. He considers killing the baby with a catapult. He ponders whether it would be possible to suffocate him with a cat, and concocts a plan to train the animal using a doll filled with hot water.

About the Book

Impossible to imagine such a sequence making it into the movie. However, a draft of the script completed three months before filming shows that the director, Robert Hamer, and his co-screenwriter, John Dighton, had all kinds of horrid ideas of their own. It survives in the archive of the British Film Institute but, oddly, seems to have escaped the notice of scholarship.

Ordering it up, I expected to encounter some minor differences. There were many. You must have JavaScript enabled in your browser to utilize the functionality of this website.

But though both works are comedies about a serial murderer, they are different creatures. The eponymous narrator of Roy Horniman's novel, son of a Jewish commercial traveller, offers his memoirs from the condemned cell, having murdered six people who stood between him and an earldom he hoped to inherit.

See a Problem?

Through Israel's story Horniman explores and parodies the anti-Semitic attitudes of Edwardian England. The narrative pace never slackens, thanks to the spareness and elegance of Horniman's prose Roy Horniman was born in As well as acting he became tenant and manager of the Criterion Theatre and wrote many plays as well as adaptations of his own and others' novels. In his later years he wrote and adapted for the screen. Sign up for free to get first access to tickets. Free to join.
