When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God.

28 Days to Powerful Prayer

Satan will so shape circumstances that unless we are kept by divine power, they will almost imperceptibly weaken the fortifications of the soul. Not one moment can we be secure except as we rely upon God, the life hidden with Christ. Watchfulness and prayer are the safeguards of purity. But none who have fallen need give up to despair.

Holy Rosary - Glorious Mysteries - Wednesday & Sunday

Aged men, once honored of God, may have defiled their souls, sacrificing virtue on the altar of lust; but if they repent, forsake sin, and turn to God, there is still hope for them. God hates sin, but He loves the sinner. At the time when the danger and depression of the church are greatest, the little company who are standing in the light will be sighing and crying for the abominations that are done in the land.

But more especially will their prayers arise in behalf of the church because its members are doing after the manner of the world. The earnest prayers of this faithful few will not be in vain. When the Lord comes forth as an avenger, He will also come as a protector of all those who have preserved the faith in its purity and kept themselves unspotted from the world. It is at this time that God has promised to avenge His own elect which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them.

Pray for the Spirit in the Time of the Latter Rain —We cannot depend upon form or external machinery. What we need is the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit of God. As you pray, believe, trust in God. It is the time of the latter rain, when the Lord will give largely of his Spirit. Be fervent in prayer, and watch in the Spirit. Their countenances were pale and marked with deep anxiety, expressive of their internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness was expressed in their countenances; large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads.

Now and then their faces would light up with the marks of God's approbation, and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them. Evil angels crowded around, pressing darkness upon them to shut out Jesus from their view, that their eyes might be drawn to the darkness that surrounded them, and thus they be led to distrust God and murmur against Him.

Their only safety was in keeping their eyes directed upward. Angels of God had charge over His people, and as the poisonous atmosphere of evil angels was pressed around these anxious ones, the heavenly angels were continually wafting their wings over them to scatter the thick darkness.

As the praying ones continued their earnest cries, at times a ray of light from Jesus came to them, to encourage their hearts and light up their countenances. Some, I saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and pleading. They seemed indifferent and careless. They were not resisting the darkness around them, and it shut them in like a thick cloud. The angels of God left these and went to the aid of the earnest, praying ones.

I saw angels of God hasten to the assistance of all who were struggling with all their power to resist the evil angels and trying to help themselves by calling upon God with perseverance. But His angels left those who made no effort to help themselves, and I lost sight of them. Jacob's distress when he learned that Esau was marching against him with four hundred men, represents the trouble of the righteous as the decree goes forth to put them to death, just before the coming of the Lord.

As the wicked gather about them they will be filled with anguish, for like Jacob they can see no escape for their lives. The angel placed himself before Jacob, and he took hold of the angel and held him, and wrestled with him all night. So also will the righteous, in their time of trouble and anguish, wrestle in prayer with God, as Jacob wrestled with the angel. Jacob in his distress prayed all night for deliverance from the hand of Esau. The righteous in their mental anguish will cry to God day and night for deliverance from the hand of the wicked who surround them.

Jacob confessed his unworthiness. Jacob took firm hold of the angel in his distress, and would not let him go. As he made supplication with tears, the angel reminded him of his past wrongs, and endeavored to escape from Jacob, to test him and prove him.

So will the righteous, in the day of their anguish, be tested, proved, and tried, to manifest their strength of faith, their perseverance and unshaken confidence in the power of God to deliver them. Jacob would not be turned away. He knew that God was merciful, and he appealed to His mercy. He pointed back to his past sorrow and repentance of his wrongs, and urged his petition for deliverance from the hand of Esau. While prayer is a joyful experience, it is also a serious encounter with God!

We should come before a God with an understanding of our reverence before Him. Sincere prayer is not about the physical position in which you pray but about the spiritual attitude of your heart. There is a vast difference between saying prayers and praying prayers. When people offer repetitious prayers as a matter of routine, in a vain attempt to perform for God, inside, their hearts are unmoved. The only way I know how to identify this in my life is to ask myself, do I only pray when people are watching? Do I simply pray so others will think more of me? Jesus is asking about our motivation.

So how about you? What's your prayer life like - not what others see, but what God sees? What is your attitude when you pray? Are you resisting Him, demanding your own way? Or are you bowing before Him and saying, as Jesus said, "Not as I will, but as you will"? Is it your desire, truly, to draw near to God, to know Him, to please Him? I often encounter a misconception about prayer that I call the saltshaker principle.

Namely that a little prayer here, a little prayer there - like we're seasoning our food with salt - should be enough. I'm here to tell you that a little "seasoning" is not enough.

We need to saturate our lives in prayer! In fact, we're told that we're to pray at all times about all things; that our lives should be lived with a continual, abiding attitude of prayerful devotion and dependence upon God. As followers of Christ, we ought always to be a mere breath away from prayer. But I've discovered in my own life that I won't pray "anywhere and everywhere" until I first pray somewhere.

So what does it look like to pray without ceasing? It means to pray as often as we can, about everything that we can. A habit is something we can't stop doing - something we do constantly. And our habits, once we form them, form us. But not all habits are bad! We are told in the Scripture that the vital habit of the believer should be prayer. We should cultivate the habit of prayer, and make it a "habit" of our hearts. When was the last time you missed a meal because you prayed?

When was the last time you prayed late into the night because you were burdened? When was the last time you got up early in the morning because you need to seek the face of God? Today, make it your mission to pray as often as you can. Don't worry if your prayers are not lengthy or well-thought out.

Just keep the lines of communication open with God all day. Talk to Him as you would to a close friend. Persistent prayer takes faithfulness and patience, especially because we're usually praying about things in our lives that are slow to change. If you're knocking on the doors of heaven now, in anticipation of God answering a real request in your life, be assured that He hears you.

God knows your need, and He cares. When the answer to our heartfelt plea is slow in coming we must persevere. Persistent prayer means praying through our doubt, praying through our fears, and refusing to give up. So many times we pray for certain things to happen, when God has a better plan in mind. And so we keep knocking until we receive the direction we need. Scripture says that God will reward in heaven those who are faithful to pray here on earth, because it is these devoted people who have the greatest eternal impact.
