The exhibition begins with a few paintings Van Gogh did in Paris just before he journeyed to Arles in Provence, just 25 miles from the Mediterranean, in to find 'the land of blue tones and gay colors' he said he craved. Edgar Degas and probably Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec had told the Dutch-born artist about the sunny, verdant south, but when he arrived in Arles, there was snow on the ground.

Van Gogh, however, was in high spirits and began to paint immediately. Brilliant snowy landscapes quickly followed by views of fruit orchards flaunting delicate spring blossoms make up the first section of the Arles period. Van Gogh had absorbed the warmth and brilliance of the Midi and literally flung it on canvas.

Following are other sections devoted to harvest scenes with oceans of golden wheat, pictures of drawbridges, public parks, and a Roman cemetery, seascapes and fishing boats, interiors of cafes, dance halls and Van Gogh's austere room, and one of his great still lifes, 'Oleanders. None of Van Gogh's studies of sunflowers, the most popular of his Arles paintings because they best exemplify the freedom of his brushwork and radiance of his color, is included because of loan and travel restrictions.

However, the show is rich in portraits of Van Gogh's Arlesiene friends -- the soldier in his exotic Algerian Zouave uniform, postman Joseph Roulin in blue uniform and cap, his red-haired wife, and his jaunty son, Armand, the goateed Dr. Rey, the intellectual Mme. Ginoux, and a peasant gardener in a blue smock. There also are some wonderful self-portraits including the one showing Van Gogh in a fur-visored hat with a bandage over his left ear, which he partially severed on Christmas Eve in a fit of depression.

His mental state had been exacerbated by differences with his friend, Paul Gauguin, who had been visiting him for two months in Arles. Van Gogh spent three weeks in the hosptial at Arles, a prelude to his eventual retreat to a mental asylum and suicide. The show also includes some of Gauguin's Arles paintings, including several subjects shared by both artists. By comparison to Van Gogh's dynamic canvasses, which pack immediate emotional impact, the Gauguin paintings in pastel tones seem serene and contemplative.

Anyone with even sketchy knowledge of Van Gogh's history and an appreciation for his work will find this a thrilling show but the viewing experience can be greatly enhanced by the page fully illustrated catalog by Ronald Pickvance, guest curator.
