Conservation and Environmental Management in Madagascar. Recovering a Lost River. Community Action for Conservation. In their chapter, Suseno Budidarsono and Paul Burgers describe forest regulations and the changes in forest cover in state-controlled forestland in Java, as well as the response mechanisms of local communities during periods of economic and social hardship throughout the second half of the 20th century, when the colonization of forested land intensified.

Some chapters give a compelling overview of the changes in political and economic landscapes since the colonial period and the consequences of these changes upon resource use. Other chapters provide a contemporary perspective on the socioeconomic constraints to a more sustainable use of marine and forest resources. The book also brings to the fore aspects that often are neglected in discussions of the environmental history of island Southeast Asia, such as the use of NTFPs.
Having said this, while important common threads run through the book, it can also be criticized for being poorly focused — as is often the case with edited volumes based on conference papers. The first two introduc- tory chapters try to bring together the two sections of forestry and fishery, but otherwise there is little connection between these two sections, to the point that they could easily be split into two different volumes.
The result is that while individual chapters will be useful to academics and students of geography, history and natural sciences, it is difficult to recommend the book as a whole to any specific audience. A geographer viewing the combination of image and title might assume that the book will deal with many of the environmental challenges facing development pathways in Malaysia. Alas, this is not the case, for this is a volume aimed squarely at economists. Maps and illustrations are conspicuous by their absence. Chapter appendices are thick with statistical models and empirical data upon which the interpretations and forecasts are stacked.
