Published by Jonathan Cape, London About this Item: Jonathan Cape, London, Hard Cover. It is nonetheless the first of Hemingway's novels, and marked the start of his long association with Scribner's. Though a cheap shot at Anderson's "Dark Laughter", Hemingway's book, in a small first printing, made a big impact on the literary scene and paved the way for his better novels to come.

Ironically, the book is fairly hard to find, and was infrequently reissued. That may be due to the eventual judgment of readers and publishers that it was as poor a piece of work as the maudlin writings it satirized. Fine condition in fine dust jacket. Later edition, reprint 3rd U.

Fine and clean internally, a candidate for a nice leather binding. Original wrappers printed in green, lightly worn and with backstrip browned, internally a little aged toned, small name and date on front free endpaper, very good. This was the first title under their Crosby Continental Editions imprint, created for their "World Masterpieces in English" series. It opens with a wonderful letter to Hemmingway from Caresse, ascribing the inspiration for the series to an afternoon spent with him at a bullfight in Spain, and laying out her reasons and her goals.

An advertisement printed on red coated paper for the next title from the press, Raymond Radiguet's The Devil in the Flesh, is tipped onto the recto of the final page. From: edconroybooks Troy, NY, U. No ink names, bookplates, etc. Price unclipped.
