Table of contents

This book is written by an Everyman, a person who has traveled through the ups and downs of life, with his eyes wide open and his heart exposed. The eyes have seen too much. The heart has taken a few hits. It started with a poem. One poem reflecting a single thought. Then a second and a third and a fourth. The poems span a period and, in themselves, have become a reflection of the writer, me. The observations are not so unusual.

It is unusual, however, I guess, to maintain a printed word of the journey. Selected pages Title Page. Or, you can call it a gun. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered.

By the time she was seventeen, Artemisia did more than grind pigment. But Rome in was a city where men took what they wanted from women, and in the aftermath of rape Artemisia faced another terrible choice: a life of silence or a life of truth, no matter the cost. In Light Filters In , Caroline Kaufman—known as poeticpoison—does what she does best: reflects our own experiences back at us and makes us feel less alone, one exquisite and insightful piece at a time. Filled with haunting, spare pieces of original art, Light Filters In will thrill existing fans and newcomers alike.

Ronit, an Israeli girl, lives on one side of the fence. Jamil, a Palestinian boy, lives on the other side. Only miles apart but separated by generations of conflict—much more than just the concrete blockade between them.

The 100 best books of the 21st century

Their fathers, however, work in a distrusting but mutually beneficial business arrangement, a relationship that brings Ronit and Jamil together. And lightning strikes. The kind of lightning that transcends barrier fences, war, and hatred. The teenage lovers fall desperately into the throes of forbidden love, one that would create an irreparable rift between their families if it were discovered.

But a love this big can only be kept secret for so long. Ronit and Jamil must face the fateful choice to save their lives or their loves, as it may not be possible to save both.

Examples of Lyric Poetry

Walt is convinced junior year is their year, and he has a plan to help them woo the girls of their dreams and become amazing athletes. Status quo seems inevitable until Noah stumbles on a stash of old love letters. But when his private artwork becomes public, Noah has a decision to make: continue his life in the dugout and possibly lose the girl forever, or take a swing and finally speak out? Vanessa is beautiful and smart, but her secrets keep her answering the call of the blade. And Conner, outwardly, has the perfect life. But dig a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself.

In one instant each of these young people decided enough was enough. They grabbed the blade, the bottle, the gun—and tried to end it all. For four high-school seniors, their goals of perfection are just as different as the paths they take to get there. For her, perfect means rejecting their ideals to take a chance on a new kind of love. Kendra covets the perfect face and body—no matter what surgeries and drugs she needs to get there.

To score his perfect home run—on the field and off—Sean will sacrifice more than he can ever win back. Everyone wants to be perfect, but when perfection loses its meaning, how far will you go? What would you give up to be perfect? One school. Twenty voices. The two boys teetering on the brink of their first anniversary. And everyone in between.

In the next seventy-two hours, Kenna may lose everything—her friends, her freedom, and maybe even herself. One kiss of the blade was all it took to get her sent to the psych ward for seventy-two hours. There she will face her addiction to cutting, though the outcome is far from certain. When fifteen-year-old Kenna is found cutting herself in the school bathroom, she is sent to a facility for mandatory psychiatric watch. Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault.

Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. Shout speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice—and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore. Authors Brian Conaghan and Sarah Crossan have joined forces to tell the story of Nicu and Jess, two troubled teens whose paths cross in the unlikeliest of places.

Nicu has emigrated from Romania and is struggling to find his place in his new home. When Nicu and Jess meet, what starts out as friendship grows into romance as the two bond over their painful pasts and hopeful futures. But will they be able to save each other, let alone themselves? This novel-in-verse—at once literary and emotionally gripping—follows the unfolding friendship between two very different teenage girls who share a hospital room and an illness. And to make matters worse, she must share a hospital room with Shannon, her polar opposite. Where Chess is polite, Shannon is rude.

Where Chess tolerates pain silently, Shannon screams bloody murder. Where Chess seems to be getting slowly better, Shannon seems to be getting worse. How these teenagers become friends, helping each other come to terms with their illness, makes for a dramatic and deeply moving read.
