The Battle for Saudi Arabia: Royalty, Fundamentalism, and Global Power by As'ad AbuKhalil

Radical Islam in Central Asia. Between Terrorism and Civil War. It is a good read to get a rapid-fire critical overview of Saudi Arabian history, and in particular the history of dissent within the country. It is also fairly entertaining to read--the author is transparently angry and is transparent about this fact, and regularly goes out of his way to insult the House of Saud and their religious clerical allies and shine a spotlight on their more unsavory beliefs This book is a short, surface-level polemic against the Saudi Arabian government and its allies.

It is also fairly entertaining to read--the author is transparently angry and is transparent about this fact, and regularly goes out of his way to insult the House of Saud and their religious clerical allies and shine a spotlight on their more unsavory beliefs and practices--and in particular, the regime's relationship with fundamentalist Wahhabi Islam. Therefore, it was a bit frustrating to start to read observations about very fascinating dynamics with Saudi Arabia, only to switch to a different subject with a paragraph or two.

It can sometimes be difficult to separate the author's opinions from the more rigorous analysis that he sometimes draws on, so this book should definitely not be the only book you read on Saudi Arabia, and the contents should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. A perfect antidote to the romance of Lawrence. This book was a little shorter than I was expecting and perhaps not as well organised as it could have been.

Perhaps a tiny bit out of date now too, as Abdullah is now King rather than Crown Prince. At least North Korea puts on some ridiculous spectacles.

Jul 30, Bahadir rated it it was amazing. What a compelling, nuanced analysis of the Saudi state's history, culture and politics domestic and international. No sign of Orientalist, nor apologist discourse when approaching every single nook and cranny of the Saudi ruling calculus. I genuinely appreciated the chapter on "Opposition" where AbuKhalil sheds light on the communist, Baathist and socialist parties that came into fruition during the early years of the Cold War era. This is a part of Saudi history that is often glanced over or What a compelling, nuanced analysis of the Saudi state's history, culture and politics domestic and international.

This is a part of Saudi history that is often glanced over or merely not discussed at all. Hopefully, AbuKhalil will write a book about the Saudi counter-revolution during the Arab spring, its vie for power with Iran post-Arab Spring and the regime's current shaky grounds in the face of growing anti-Gulf monarchy sentiments sweeping the Middle East, yet again. Or maybe I will if he does not.

Aug 10, Sam Berner rated it liked it Shelves: Considering that the guy had the guts to write this, one can only pray no harm occurs.. Money rots religion - the Wahhabis started barefoot, hungry and on camels. Like the hordes from the east that built the Hellenic and then the Roman empire. And like them, they will fall, simply because of the amount of wealth they have accumulated.
