Thus, Jesus appears as God's "intellect" in the sense of registering the experience of the human condition in its spatiotemporal specificity, while suspending both memory of humanity's past and judgement of its future. The periodically adversarial relationship that humans have with God in the Old Testament was partly due to God's memory of the Jews' past failures to adhere to the Covenant. In contrast, Jesus comes without any such prejudice but equally without the capacity for judgement over humanity's fate. It is to this aspect of the human condition that I shall devote the rest of this article.

Despite their otherwise rather different understandings of the divine-human relationship, Judaism and Islam are generally agreed that Adam's Fall was an important but not decisive moment in that relationship.

Put somewhat starkly, since Adam had not been created to be so uniquely godlike, it follows that his Fall could not have been so steep. Indeed, the early Christians largely accepted the Hebrew reading of Adam's Fall as involving the removal of certain godlike qualities such as physical immortality and nature's easy submission to human intellect and will. However, this demotion was understood as a one-time penalty.

God's forgiveness left Adam and his descendants with sufficiently reliable sensory and cognitive capacities to flourish on Earth, such that humanity might be able to regain its lost standing over time through its own collective efforts. Augustine's doctrine of Original Sin denied this sanguine conclusion.

For Augustine, God never strictly forgave Adam's transgression. Whereas before the Fall, Adam possessed the best qualities of all of the creatures, which enabled him to exercise dominion over them; after the Fall, his powers were severely diminished, such that he became easy prey to most creatures and had to struggle to survive. For Augustine, Adam forfeited humanity's divinity and was punished until further notice by becoming an animal in nearly all respects. However, God gave Adam's descendants the opportunity to be redeemed by exercising their only remaining godlike quality: free will.

Much of Christian theology has been about answering this question. But one thing is clear. Redemption will not come simply by successive generations of humans improving their standing in the world regardless of God's approval. Because Adam had been created as essentially divine, his loss of divinity after the Fall left human psychology fundamentally disorganised.

This helps to explain the various calamities that Adam's descendants undergo even after the Abrahamic Covenant. Typically, the biblical authors say that God condemns these humans for being too self-satisfied, thinking that they have done more than they really have. For Augustine, the metaphysical continuity that obtains between the human and the divine after the Fall does not have as its opposing poles, animal and divine , with "human" located somewhere in the middle. Rather, the relevant opposition is not-divine and divine , with "human" occupying the "not-divine" pole.

However, as the leading science-religion scholar Peter Harrison has argued, this seemingly harsh verdict on humanity in fact served to inspire not only the radical reinvention of Christianity in the sixteenth century that is known as the Protestant Reformation but also the Scientific Revolution, which began in the second half of that century.

What made these movements so radical was their assumption that the realisation of our full species potential requires confronting the unnaturalness of the human condition, which is a product of our deeply fallen state. In the modern era, this sensibility was secularised in many ways, not least through a distrust of established institutions, including both church and state.

But the distrust equally extended to the human mind itself, sometimes resulting in scepticism and even nihilism. However, perhaps the most efficacious response was the experimental method, the systematic subjection of nature — including human nature — to continual testing. In his famous essay "Of Truth," Francis Bacon, the English Lord Chancellor who is normally credited with codifying the scientific method, makes clear that his model for this process of putting the human condition through endless trial is none other than the trial of Jesus.

The Anthropocene will pose unavoidable questions about what life is worth and what people owe one another. It will either amplify existing inequality, or set in motion a different logic of power. It will either be democratic, or it will be horrible. In an age that is often sentimental, utilitarian and impatient, we must not allow the language of rights to wander too far from its roots in an acknowledgement of the sacred. The size of the medium, regardless of the content, poses a profound ethical problem.
