The New World, Vanquished by the Spanish Empire, little remained of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. From the ashes of their cities, a unified legend emerged: But their quest to learn the truth about the Death Relic may end up costing them their lives. King Ludwig II ruled Bavaria for twenty-two years, commissioning extravagant castles throughout his homeland and exhibiting such bizarre behavior that he was eventually declared insane.

According to legend, Ludwig had stockpiled a massive cache of gold and jewels that would finance the construction of the largest castle of all time. Jonathon Payne and David Jones are pulled into the mystery by a colleague, who asks them to investigate the legend.

CHRIS KUZNESKI

Another awesome Payne and Jones adventure. I enjoyed the change in setting to the Americas for this story and the extra little surprises with characters in this story. The action is non stop, the history fantastic and the twists and turns enough to keep you dizzy. Plus the jokes are as corny as ever: One person found this helpful.

There was always the back and forth banter Jon and Jonesy. In this the author turns a corner an successfully ands situational comedy I went back reread the plantation to see if maybe I just missed the humor, nope and what a difference in rereading the original Payne and Jones work. The is not only color and sound, movement, sensation of feel be it mist or a dry breeze which carries a sent be it the smell of the ocean air or the fruity smell of a tropical drink.

Paperback Editions

Neat when you find a piece of work from an author and grow with him with each new installment. I have read all of Kuzneski's books and I think of him as one of the weaker writers of this genre. That said, this novel was a large waste of time. I kept waiting for something to happen.

Chris Kuzneski - The Death Relic

It never had a pay off. Much of this book is filled with what the author must think of as clever dialogue and over the top bragging about his characters.

15 Things You Didn’t Know About Jean Michel Basquiat

His characters never demonstrate the prowess he maintains they possess. He also built up this awesome cache of treasure and at the end we got no specific description and no history altering discovery. I think he was better off having the character Maria confirm that Jesus had been to preColumbian meso America. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Part of me wants to criticize the lack of plot depth, almost too casual writing style, cliche dialogue, and our hero's routine heroics, except it all WORKS!! The even keeled and informative writing style is refreshing after some of the frenetic, over the top reads I've had recently.

Less can be more, but more can be less, too. I think Kuzneski can write a 5 for sure and I will be reading when he does. While a good thriller I do have one criticism. The teasing exchanges between the two main characters is much more than one would expect from men of this type.

These exchanges make them seem much more juvenile and silly and not men to be be trusted with anything serious. Aside from that I enjoy the story and look forward to the author's next book. This has all the high energy and plot twists of Kuzneski"s other Payne and Jones thrillers. However, the absence of a real villain leaves the plot about listless and turns the novel into a series of bizarre misunderstandings.

It also robs the book of a climactic finish--it just ends right as you feel your building for a big finish. The premise is a good one which just needed more development of the important stuff , and fewer pages of distracting frat-boy hucksterisms between the protagonists. Payne and Jones are a wealthy, devil-may-care duo who act like an old married couple but can kill you with a butter knife. I still can't wait for the next installment. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. I have love Chris Kuzneski's writing since my first nove. After reading the first novel I found all of them, bought them and read them as quickly as I could.

The relationship between Payne and Jones is really unique and fun. They certainly have each others back. The locations are really neat, but the stories really keep you going. You read the whole book, think back about the locations and dangers and realize the short amount of time the story covers. Really enjoyed them all, and highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fast moving, action packed adventures.
