It is a place that appeals to grumpy romantics like me, who consider reading stoic philosophy a relaxing past-time. Feral types who love the sensation of standing on top cliff, lungs full of wind, barely standing upright in the roaring gale, thinking that you will never be as alive as in that precise moment. It is a place of green rolling hills, covered in gorse growing diagonally — an angry looking bush if I ever saw one. A place of plateaus covered in rusty bogs and rock. A place of wind and rugged fishermen, but also of laughter and cheer, blue skies and purple-gold hills. It is a place where nature shows its teeth, reminding mankind that we are not as mighty as we like to think we are.

Maybe it is the fact that it is certainly not a place that would appeal to everybody. A bizarre juxtaposition of harsh nature, cosy insular countryside and remnants of Victorian grandeur. That might also be what makes it so appealing. A place for sailors, fishermen, pirates, smugglers, tax evaders, musicians, writers, poets and artists. A place where Manx language, culture, music , art, food and produce are being celebrated and reinvented by new generations of a small, yet very proud and creative community. A community where many of its members went abroad and came back. Thus its pride in their own identity is of an educated and liberal nature, not to be confused with some brutish, knuckle-headed form of nationalism.

Please do not ruin it. Blein vie noa! Categories: Travel. As a Manxman I thank you. Many people I know have come to the Island for work, with the intension off going back to their homeland. My wife was one of them,29 years later she is still here with me and our son.

But you have reminded me why people fall in love with the Island. I wish I could write as eloquently as you as you gave me a feeling of longing, and I live here sounds silly. You are welcome. You never know, maybe one day I also start working on that island and never go back. As for writing, it is a craft like any other.

You get better by studying the work of others and practising. I am one of those who left to go to university, stayed away and saw other places for fifteen years — then came home with a husband and a baby. You put so well the way in which it is the people and those grey winter skies, high seas and high winds, and horizontal gorse bushes, that we love and that draws us back.

New Water in the Aral Sea

It is good to know that our island holds a little piece of your heart, too. Thank you for writing this about our beautiful Island.

Windswept by RedAwning, Charleston County, United States of America

It is always beautiful to me even on dark windy days. It is pure magic.

May you soon return and be entranced again. I am a lifelong motorcyclist who came here for the TT races and fell in love with the Isle.

Wilmette Harbor Sail - Sea Diva and Windswept

You never even mentioned the somewhat hedonistic motorcycling festivals that we have here. I was thinking whether I should mention the TT, since I know it is a big thing. But I have had no experience with motor racing so far, and as you say, I have yet to see the island in summer. I did not know that motorcycle racing has been a part of the island for such a long time. What a wonderful tribute to my amazing home. You have put into words all the things I feel about my Island. Thank you so much for sharing everything we Manx hold dear.

Windswept Cottage

Thank you ,that is a wonderful tribute to that enchanting island. My husband first came to the island for the TT races in the 50s and 60s,as many folks do. Many years later he suggested a holiday there, this was followed by another and another, now we have been in all seasons. We love it and plan,in the next few months to move there, not all the homes are for millionaires!! We have sailed around the Atlantic in our own boat, visited many places and lived for the last 15 years in Portugal. We have decided to spend our remaining time on this earth on this lovely island with its history and friendly ,helpful people.

I may even try to learn Manx. Your email address will not be published. WordNet 3. In literature: Just near Branshaw Teleragh it was and we descended on it from the high, clear, windswept waste of the New Forest. James's Square" by Melville Davisson Post. It was raining, the long stretches of salt marsh were windswept and brown and bleak. A sharp wind was blowing, and the stars winked cheerfully in a windswept sky.

Windswept Sea

We went to windswept, Sabbath-keeping Edinburgh, to high Stirling and dark Holyrood, and to Abbotsford. So our little faith keeps us in the boat, or fails us in the waves of that windswept sea. Days in the open woods and fields burned his pale skin a good mahogany, and stamped upon it the windswept freshness of out of doors.

I said good-bye to her alone, in the reddish, windswept space before the Great House. Some in Turkish waters, others by the windswept heights of Norway and the Dane!
