The waiter set the table for two, just as he asked, but though he waited six hours, no one ever arrived to join him. Days passed, turning to one week, then two, then four. Every time the bell at the door would ring, Aziraphale would turn too quickly, his heart leaping to his throat despite himself. But it was only ever humans stumbling in from the street, confused at the turn things had taken.

Heaven did not bother him.

Description

Aziraphale rather suspected it was because they knew what had happened, and felt it was a worse punishment to leave him as he was. He took to performing a sort of celestial taxi service. Day in, day out, Aziraphale saw to it that humans would arrive where they were wanted, where they most had need.

Meaning of "Armageddon" in the English dictionary

It was more than a little like torture, and more than a little like penance. He was always exactly on time. He prayed for the first time since that fateful night in his bookshop—not as angels do, with sigils and candles and bright white lights, but as humans do, on his knees blinded by his own tears.

He begged, not knowing if She was listening, not knowing if She still cared. Eventually, Aziraphale fell asleep on the floor. He dreamed of long, sinuous coils wrapped around him, of a shovel-shaped head resting on his shoulder. The next day, the roads were plowed. Aziraphale got into his car just after ten, rubbing his hands together to warm them as a human would while the car rumbled to life.

He was just preparing to steer into traffic when the rear passenger door opened and someone climbed inside. He jerked his head up to stare in the rear-view mirror and found himself riveted by the golden eyes looking back at him. Eventually—after Crowley had pulled Aziraphale into the back seat and they had spent a good long while getting reacquinted and simultaneously fogging up the glass—Crowley pulled back just enough to give Aziraphale a thoughtful look.

The tease in his voice was rather undercut by being wrapped around more of Aziraphale than any being corporated as human should have been able to manage. Aziraphale smiled. It still hurt, but it was the good kind, the sweet, aching kind. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Unfortunately, this requires a conversation neither of them really knows how to have. Or: in which it takes all of two 2 bottles of wine to make Aziraphale both theological and emotional. On AO3. Which means they just stand there, side by side and one step from the threshold, staring at melted demon goo together.

A minute or two, and all that was left of the demon Ligur is gone. Aziraphale takes a deep breath once the doorway is cleared, and stands there giving Crowley an eggshell look, a delicate, brittle, barely-whole look.

See a Problem?

This, too, does not seem to go over well. Crowley frowns at this. My side, too. Then he turns away, and Crowley assumes he imagined it. Even if he managed to avert Armageddon, the forces of Hell and Satan himself was still going to come after him and destroy him for it. So, of course, he had an escape plan. He HAD to have an escape plan. Further, just mentioning an escape plan is NOT the same thing as literally running then and there. Crowley does not attempt to put his escape plan into place at all until the forces of Hell are at his doorstep.

It is not selfish for Crowley to have some sense of self-preservation. It is not selfish to have a back up emergency escape plan for if doing everything you can think of is still not enough.

Why Evangelicals Support Israel - Russell Moore

It is not selfish to run from the literal forces of Hell attempting to destroy you personally because you tried to save the world. The moment he knew about the Antichrist he was straight onto trying to prevent it without any hesitation. Crowley is the one who convinced Aziraphale.

So, of course, he was at least partially motivated by love of the world and preventing suffering and all of that. Can we please stop condemning him for making an escape plan? Can we please stop condemning him for wanting to live? And please, if you are sacrificing your whole life for the greater good, stop.

  • But a dead man coming back to life? In our sophisticated age, when myth has given way to science, who can take such a claim seriously? Some argue that Jesus never died on the cross. In The Economy of God Lee clearly reveals the move of the Divine Trinity and gives believers practical ways to cooperate with Him for the fulfillment of His eternal plan.
