The waiter set the table for two, just as he asked, but though he waited six hours, no one ever arrived to join him. Days passed, turning to one week, then two, then four. Every time the bell at the door would ring, Aziraphale would turn too quickly, his heart leaping to his throat despite himself. But it was only ever humans stumbling in from the street, confused at the turn things had taken.
Heaven did not bother him.
Aziraphale rather suspected it was because they knew what had happened, and felt it was a worse punishment to leave him as he was. He took to performing a sort of celestial taxi service. Day in, day out, Aziraphale saw to it that humans would arrive where they were wanted, where they most had need.

He was just preparing to steer into traffic when the rear passenger door opened and someone climbed inside. He jerked his head up to stare in the rear-view mirror and found himself riveted by the golden eyes looking back at him. Eventually—after Crowley had pulled Aziraphale into the back seat and they had spent a good long while getting reacquinted and simultaneously fogging up the glass—Crowley pulled back just enough to give Aziraphale a thoughtful look.
The tease in his voice was rather undercut by being wrapped around more of Aziraphale than any being corporated as human should have been able to manage. Aziraphale smiled. Even if he managed to avert Armageddon, the forces of Hell and Satan himself was still going to come after him and destroy him for it. So, of course, he had an escape plan. He HAD to have an escape plan. Further, just mentioning an escape plan is NOT the same thing as literally running then and there. Crowley does not attempt to put his escape plan into place at all until the forces of Hell are at his doorstep.
It is not selfish for Crowley to have some sense of self-preservation. It is not selfish to have a back up emergency escape plan for if doing everything you can think of is still not enough.

It is not selfish to run from the literal forces of Hell attempting to destroy you personally because you tried to save the world. The moment he knew about the Antichrist he was straight onto trying to prevent it without any hesitation. Crowley is the one who convinced Aziraphale.
So, of course, he was at least partially motivated by love of the world and preventing suffering and all of that. Can we please stop condemning him for making an escape plan?
