I bought a copy tomy daughter as well. The author's openness and honesty, thewonderful and transformative energy of the time, and the compellingstory of young people connecting during such a significant era allworked together to make a great read.

But a good report on Bowie's earlydevelopment as an artistBy CustomerA bit self indulgent emotionallyfrom the author injecting herself into the narrative with hurtfeelings etc. But a good report on Bowie's early development as anartist. The message: just be what you have to be and keep going. It was so-soBy DayTripperSomeone recommended this book to me and honestly, I wasgravely disappointed in it.

Not because it wasn't full of 'juicytidbits' but more so there wasn't enough of David in it. Maryshould have just written her life story and tossed in hersprinkling of Bowie in it. David Bowie was 22 years old and still living with his parents insoutheast London when, quite by chance, he met Mary Finnigan whilevisiting her upstairs neighbours in nearby Beckenham. Still anunrecognised talent haunting the London folk clubs, desperatelyseeking paid gigs, he couldnrsquo;t even dream of a future as aglobal rock phenomenon. Life started to take interesting turnsafter he moved in with Mary and her two children in the spring of With a small group of psychedelic pioneers, they launched theBeckenham Arts Lab in a local pub and organized a free musicfestival in the townrsquo;s park.

That summer his first hit, SpaceOddity, made it into the charts and became the theme song for thefirst moon landing. He was suddenly on a trajectory towardssuperstardom. Millions of words have been written aboutBowiersquo;s life, but his early days as a struggling songwriterand performer have been shrouded in hearsay. Here is the full storyof his pivotal year in Beckenham, written before his death by hisfriend, lover and landlady, one of the first people to encourageand support him.
