This is a well-written account of Britain's undeclared naval war against the Soviet menace after WW I. It covers two story lines. One is of the British spy who must sneak across borders to live undercover in Soviet territory during its most repressive period.

INTERNATIONAL PUNK

The other is of daring British sailors in experimental torpedo boats that sink Goliath size Soviet warships while supporting the espionage effort. The author genuinely thrills with accounts of small motor boats, armed with a couple of machine guns and a single torpedo attacking cruisers and battleships, and sinking them. This book adds to it and gives a balanced assessment of his acheivements with the benefits of hindsight and without having to worry about living people being put in jeopardy. This makes for a fascinating story, which increases your awareness of just how nasty the red terror was. Stalin once said that one death was a tragedy but a million deaths a statistic.

The author brings to life some of those individual tragedies. In summary, this book is well worth the read, and I would urge anyone who was slightly irritated by the tabloid style to stick with it, as this is a great story. Jan 05, maistrich rated it liked it. Interesting story that I had no idea about before happening upon this book. Well-written, though a few parts are a slog. Narrative is quite "fictionalized", makes one wonder how detailed the main characters' journals actually were.

The author seems to make many assumptions and extrapolations that are not always explicitly pointed out. Book does have some mistakes that annoy a Finn, e. I did notice this book is now available also in Finnish, the translator presumably will have fixed those errors. I had no idea England and the US backed the White Russians in fighting off the Revolutionary Red army that eventually became the Soviet Union to the point that England had battles with their warships. All the early characters are here Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, etc. There are also lots of claims that Reilly, Ace of Spies was a big fibber and MI6 is not very efficient. This was another 4 year old ARC from work. Jun 24, Doug rated it really liked it.

The Bolshevik revolution was beating the White Russian army. A British spy was risking his life and the life of Russians to gather information that should have prompted more support. A naval plan to rescue the spy and destroy the Bolshevik naval base at Kronstadt could have changed the outcome of the Russian Revolution. Well, started to read it on recommendation. It is the kind of book, based on real facts, that is told in a very understandable way. There is a plot, a beginning and an end. It's not loose parts of History put together in a random way.

History facts seem to match the real thing Was drawn in the atmosphere of the attack and its preparation. Recommend it to people that like same gender. History that reads like a novel in a period of time that doesn't get as much attention as it warrants. The book is so much more than a story about a mission to rescue a spy.

Definitely worth the read. Jan 25, Daniel rated it it was amazing. Jan 28, Jennifer rated it liked it Shelves: Would be four, save that I found the first half of the book uneven Apr 22, Raymond added it. Dec 09, Megwil rated it liked it.
