We had the chicken tamale mole negro, which was substantial and very good. S enjoyed the chicken livers and chile rilleno. We thought they had skimped on the "heirloom" oranges in the spinach and orange salad.
Service was pleasant, efficient and accommodating. We had 3 generations at Comal for dinner last night, and it was excellent. It was busy enough so that the grandchildren ages 3 and 5 were no distraction for the other diners. The Mexican food was great: guacamole was delicious, the tortilla chips tasted homemade and the margaritas were excellent. We also had BBQ spareribs, rice, beans, ceviche, and fish tacos.
Everything was tasty as can be. The place was crowded and lively. A good time was had by all. I went at an off time, a Monday night late, when it wasn't crowded. They have a simple formula My fish tacos were delicious and came with a side of slaw. The tamale order came with a very large tamale, covered with sauce, and nothing on the side. Shrimp ceviche was very fresh tasting with a cilantro emulsion. The chips it came with had great crunch.

The dessert menu was somewhat limited but I'm happy to recommend the chocolate boudin not very Mexican sounding but delicious. I was fine with that as I received good service.

But I imagine some people have a few margaritas, don't read the check and tip extra without knowing it! Comal is a largish, informal, pretty good Mexican restaurant in the central business district such as it is of Berkeley. The menu is fairly simple, the overall quality of the food is very good.
Full bar, reasonable range of beers, lots of mezcal. This is an excellent place for groups, and would work quite well for most children. Highly recommended for a casual meal.
