Can you volunteer in a local school to see if it is for you? You will definitely need to be in a classroom before you decide. Most colleges have programs that have you go into schools your sophomore and junior year before student teaching. Some people find out then that teaching is not for them. Good luck with your decision and welcome to PT!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

It is a job. You assess, you differentiate. There are a lot of committed people on boards like this who scare people away from professions. Apparently you are not allowed to have "a job" that is to say, to separate your life from what you do to make money. I knew a person who was a high-money advertising executive. She worked hard and constantly at her craft, and owned a huge expensive house in Denver and other things. She now works at the job she really loves.

Finding Your Calling as a Spiritual Teacher

She is an employee of a gardening store getting way less than she used to. I think the question is, what would you rather be doing than teaching. For me, the answer is sculpting, art, and growing orchids and rescuing dogs or animals. It is not "teaching. It is regulation, beurocracy, can't spell that word and lack of choice. Getting my masters, and truthfully, feel I will be teaching for a Maximum of years. The farther you get into the degree, the more you see how much a tool you have to be, and in a sense for a really educated person, at some point you need to have that religious "belief," because no one wants to be a tool.

But, Hey, the money's good, and 2 months vacation can't be beat! I entered college a premed student and begun taking premed classes. Then my freshman year two things happened. The first was organic chemistry who new it could be so hard. The second was I took an education spring term class. During the class we went to Brother and Big Sister after school program and got to work and interact with kids.

Needless to say I fell in love. I thought it over and talked to the teacher who happened to be the head of the Education department. I then decided to change my major. I believe that teaching was my true calling. In preschool, I always said that I wanted to be a mommy, but my passion quickly turned into teaching. Some of the most influential people in my life were my teachers. I always developed great relationships with my teachers and felt as if they helped build my character. After working and serving with children, I developed my skills in the field and found what my gifts are.

During this time, I realized that I was specifically being built into the teacher I am destined to be. It has truly been an amazing experience. Throughout my college career, I have definitely questioned whether teaching is my calling or not. Some difficult assignments and all of the stress made me wonder if this career was for me or not. Time after time, there were confirmations that I am meant to be a teacher. Some people find out sooner than others, but I believe that everyone has a purpose.

Let’s Stop Referring To Teaching As A Calling

The career is not your only purpose, but it is most certainly part of it. I would recommend volunteering to find out what your gifts are and where your passion is!

You may be so passionate about math, science, or literature. Or perhaps you simply enjoy being around and helping children and teaching them fun things. Take a second and think about it: Why do you want to be a teacher?

Teaching: A Calling vs. Profession

The answer, whatever it may be, outlines the reason you are called to teach. A calling implies a deep-seated belief that teaching is the only profession that makes sense for you to pursue, but it is much broader than that. It can be as simple as a nudge toward the teaching profession from a former teacher, or as complex as a lifelong passion for supporting the children of your community. Like the countless number of teachers who came before you, you may have a sincere appreciation for the unique qualities of youth.

Teaching appears to be a highly satisfying profession: Teachers also provide a valuable service to society and hold a respected position.

Parents, especially, place great trust in teachers by entrusting their children to the care of teachers for the school day. Because teachers are in contact with many students, recognition of the service they provide is unavoidable. Prominent members of the community, such as politicians, bankers, and doctors, will often publicly laud the teachers, and star teachers are often featured in local news.
